Guest
Whilst practicing high notes I've been losing tons of my lower register, namely notes used for low notes such as rapping. However I still have those NOTES.. it's just the resonance and everything feels so confusing. I mean for example in some Drake songs he sings notes 2 - 3 octaves a part... In terms of sound quality it sounds almost impossible... but in singing terms I need to know how it FEELS to do it successfully. My head resonance is "weak" but with a bunch of tweaking and ascending sirens combined with descending slides I find that the resonance can all feel the SAME... it feels like its all coming out of the pharynx and directly into my face. It feels like a "resonant sweet spot" but really it's something happening at the cords to make the resonance blast into my face... What should I focus on to help blend all my resonances when going through 2-3 octaves in a song. For example a low-voiced rap to an almost falsetto-like quality in singing. PS when my resonance chambers are "maximized" everything feels silkier... no breaks... no registers just buzz. Hope someone can recommend some stuff for me to do =) - JAY
Owen Korzec
A file would help. What you're asking takes a long time to figure out and it's very individual. So don't be looking for a quick fix to achieve tonal unity of your entire range. What I'd suggest instead is start training some beef into your low notes too so the rapping works out better. In order to do so you'll have to commit to leaving a lot of heady qualities behind. Only in the low range.

For me I sometimes get to a state where it feels like I am singing on an inhale (I'm not, but still). When my breathing is setup like this I can't slide down to my lower notes at all, unless I'm having a super support day where I can "bridge" properly. But if I decide to sing more powerfully with a feeling of belting out the air I can reach those low notes again (and belting that low doesn't require much power). In CVT terms this would be that my lowest octave is mostly accessible to overdrive but not curbing and all forms of neutral. Not sure if this helps in your situation at all. It does feel off to sing low on one of those days...
ronws
Jay, you are a r&b singer, in the style of maybe Bruno Mars or Aaron Neville. Don't worry about rap. And I know better than to expect a file of a whole song, an application of what you are talking about. Hey, I learn the hard way but, eventually, I do learn. Even I, a white teenage male, have rapped on one of my original tunes.
ronws
That was good, Owen. And I don't listen to much rap since Tone Loc. I wasn't trying to crush Jay's dreams. It's just that, with what it seemed to be in his last few dozen threads, his main interest was r&b and I thought the rap would be a distraction from "training like you will sing." But who knows, maybe the stretch will do him good. Still waiting on hearing a whole song from him.
Guest
http://www.mediafire.com/play/cbbn5ajx5eb9au2/jcole+payback_mixdown4.mp3 No autotune a couple basic effects but you can hear how its a struggle for me to rap/sing I've only been working on my low notes ascending/descending for a week now but its all coming back. Also my rap voice feels buzzy as a bee compared to my head voice. I need more control of support and resonance... I have not been including much LOUD singing which is why I lost low notes but it feels like there's a relation between using more "loudness" and more chest for me. At the same time maintaining a top-down phonation with heady-slides and humming has been helping me a lot... it feels like a juggling act. Also this is horrible quality Don't crush mi dreams ron! (irish accent) Woah there distortion much? Turn the input volume WAY down or take off the distortion effect, whichever one it is. We can't hear your voice through that at all. Try again...what little I can hear through the distortion sounds okay but it's covering up a lot
ronws
I agree with Owen, we would like to hear your voice without so much track distortion. Also, halfway through, it sounded like you lyrical timing was off. I don't know if that was you or a latency problem in your editing software. Otherwise, not bad. You might want to explore this avenue some more. But, like I said, I have mostly listened to old-school stuff. If you ever do "Funky Cold Medina," you had better post it or I will tell you crappy jokes until your ears bleed.
