hi folks, you know how every once in a while you read or hear something said in slightly different way and all of a sudden a light goes off in your head.

well, here's what i discovered this weekend ....being one of those lucky guys who was not blessed with a terrific profile (i have a bit of a receding chin), i started to think that perhaps i might have better tonality and a more open throat if i dropped my jaw and jutted it forward just a bit as if i had a normal chin.

i thought perhaps my chin might impede my voice.

then i thought that if visualized my mouth and throat in the shape of the letter "c" not rounded but an angular "c" i might position my mouth and throat better.

well i went out to karaoke and tried to sing this way and believe me it worked. it's a subtle shift of my chin up and out a bit and i felt more freedom and ease of singing.

what's your take on that?

I think you're wrong, although I'm not 100% sure. But f.ex. the CVT book talks about that you should never ever protrude your chin forward as that might cause tension in your throat. Anyone else like to chime in?

VIDEO.. If jutting your jaw forward was easier.... then I would suggest there was restricting tension already, and the small motion you made required you to release that tension.

As others have said, a jutting jaw is probably not the best idea. However, a 'dropped' jaw (which happens when the TMJ is unlocked) is quite desirable. It creates space in the mouth.

Here is something you can try.... do your Jaw-jutt gently in front of a mirror, and see how far down the back of your jaw (the angle right in front of the ears) goes. Sing a note, and while you do, let the front of the jaw move downward + back just a little, to a place where you don't feel tension holding the jaw or stiffness in the tongue anywhere.

thanks as always....the jaw position is a subtle shift forward and down, as if i had a normal chin (lol)

it really helped and the notes felt more open and resonant when i went for the "to" word in "a change in gonna come"....."it's been toooooo hard livin'.......recently at a karaoke bar.
