Fall Out Boy style vox-Does this hit home?

Hey guys, this is my first post here. I am in a pop punk band as one of the lead singers/guitarist. Turns out I'm not as god a singer as I thought I was, so I want to make sure my vocals aren't cringe-worthy or embarrassing. My biggest problem is that sometimes my singing sounds just like talking to me, if you know what I mean. Anyway, here's a crappy phone recording of me playing and singing Grand Theft Autumn by Fall Out Boy (I made a few mistakes on guitar... whatever :P) I have been singing for a while, so I want this to be taken as a moderately high-level critique. Thank you for listening.

Sounds really good to me. I like the distortion on your voice, and rhythmical phrasing and you are very accurate with pitch. The tone is good - nothing "cringe-worthy" at all.

Thank you! I have received some "cringe-worthy" feedback from one of my friends (they cringed when they heard it :P) s oI wanted to get a second opinion.

Well that style is maybe not for everyone. It's not "pretty" singing. I happen to like that stuff, and you are doing that style well. Would sound better if you recorded it with a whole band. Maybe if your friend heard the whole thing they would like it? Either that or they just don't like the genre?

Yeah, I have a drummer, bassist, and 2nd guitarist, but I wanted to focus mainly on my vox for this recording. And you're right, I guess he just didn't like the genre (he's more of the "pretty" singing type)

I think you have the right voice for punk. And I mean that as a compliment. Punk has always seemed like a belted style and it sounds like you know how to belt. And yet, your articulation is clear, so that people can hear the words you are singing. So that singing feels like you are talking works for this, I think.

Thanks for the feedback and compliment! I've always sorta had trouble getting that "crunch" to my voice that punk often entails, so it's good that it seems like it's working :P

Some punk voices just won't have a lot of gravel or grit in them, other than whatever that singer can manage to do. For to put on too much affection of grit or whatever could be as pretentious as anything punk might protest. Punk is a statement of culture, art, opinion.

I think you got the sound spot on buddy. Just get out there and do it with confidence.

Remember a big aspect of punk is not giving a S**t, so don't forget that when someone seems like they doubt you.
