VideoHere
everyone knows that it's not good to sing on a full stomach, but last might i found out firsthand what a serious mistake this was. i was at a party and you always get those people that want you to get up and sing...some who honestly want you to.....and those people who simply can't believe you do (oh, you're a singer? oh wow!) and would like to see you fall flat on your face....know what i mean.....? well, some guy there actually had karaoke (a cdg player) right on his i pad and naturally i was coaxed into singing... but i had just pigged out on buffalo wings and all kinds of crap....and was filled to the brim. after much prodding, i sang "knock on wood" and "head games" against my wishes just to get them to leave me alone...boy i cannot begin to tell you the effort i had to expend.....the strength i had to eke out to be able to sing those two songs on a full stomach... head games was torture, and i ended up with a big headache that had my right eye tearing...sucked!!! miraculously, it was a halfway decent vocal, but as i sang each line, i fought to fight from going flat ......each line...especially "head games." trying to support the voice with a full stomach was beyond difficult. let this little story serve as warning to all beginners.... do not try to sing intense songs on a full stomach. Owen Korzec
I'm with Phil, I like to have the extra energy/calories/whatever the heck that wonderful magic food brings, right before I go sing. Obviously the more I eat the more time I want to leave before I go sing, but not much...30 minutes between a full meal and singing is fine for me. Having some kind of food close beforehand makes a big difference. If I haven't eaten in hours, my singing tends to be more poorly coordinated. Don't know the science but eating before I sing just seems to work for me. On a side note, anybody else find that bananas and singing are an excellent combo? For some reason I frequently tend to grab one when I take a break during my training. It seems to soothe the throat or something...again, don't know the science, just following my body's intuition. As for a full stomach affecting support, idk, doesn't phase much me personally. Bob, could it be that perhaps these tunes felt especially hard just because you didn't warm up? ronws
I've not had the experience of audience members expecting me to fail but that may be because I am tall and scary-looking. That is, I have that biker look until I open my mouth to sing and out comes this soprano kind of voice. But I like irony, too. I guess that's why I like to post songs, here. You guys will just listen to my voice and not be distracted by my thousand yard stare and you don't hurt your neck straining to look up at my face. Will there sometimes be audience members who want to see you fail or minimize you? Sure. It's my aim to disregard them as easily as they disregard me. Most times, such people are "small" and I don't mean the size of their physical stature. In the end, any energy spent worrying about them is wasted. You sing to the audience that is there to hear you. Anyway, I agree with Phil. If I am eating, I try not to eat to heavy. But, like you, Bob, I have been "volunteered" to sing after eating a meal. Not prepared to sing, no "warm-up." Just grab the mic and go. And I did okay. I think all the practice at other times and various conditions make such a thing possible and survivable. Point is, you made it, even if it felt like effort, to you. And that is a testament to technique and training. You knew to adjust and how to adjust. The only problem I have with this, in fact, is that you didn't get it recorded to share, here. You will sing for a group of people, some of whom you say do not have your best interests at heart but you won't share it with us? Some of us, me especially, are fans of your voice and singing. What do I need to do to hear you sing "Head Games"? Do I need to treat you like crap? Is that the secret? Cast forth the idea that you cannot do it so that you will, to prove me "wrong"? It's a losing bet because I know you can do it. Come on, Bob, sing it for us.
VideoHere
na, na, na.....folks, believe me, if you eat a huge meal and you fill up to the brim and them immediately go to sing something challenging it's gonna be brutal..... it felt like was in my car approaching a steep hill and the gas pedal could only go down half way..... brother ron, i'm hard on myself when it comes to singing....the truth is these foreigner songs are still not at a consistency of quality i'm happy enough with yet. i'm determined to get with lou gramm one day, and the first question i'm gonna ask him is why the hell are these foreigner tunes such a bitch to sing?....lol!!! ever try them? they're a bitch and remain a bitch, at least for me. i lower most a half step.....still tough. they're so "threshold" !!!! Owen Korzec
Dante, I'm not talking filled to the brim meals. More like a typical, healthy sized meal that's full enough to where I could eat more but dont want more. Those really dont seem to bother my singing ever. Plus with the eating right before singing approach, it usually ends up just being that I had a meal no more than an hour before and then a snack just minutes before I sing and the combination of those two seems to be optimal. Felipe Carvalho
Neither hungry or totally stuffed is comfortable... Just dont exagerate or eat heavy spicy stuff, should be fine. The better you feel, without using drugs, the better it is .
Owen Korzec
I actually have had good results singing after eating spicy/hot stuff, it kind of helps kickstart the blood flow actually, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to others because there's the risk of reflux issues and whatnot. Just happens to do good things for me
VideoHere
Phil, You said you wanted to hear me sing, so i put up 2 links. black hole sun and a change is gonna come. owen, you can sing well right after you've really pigged out, all the power to you. for me, besides being a mistake, it was brutally difficult. i should have found a way to avoid singing that night. ronws
Thing is, Bob, you sang for your public, as they demanded and you did make it through, strain or not. And that is cool. Bravo. I still have a hard time picturing buffalos having wings. True story - my friend Lee was at a restaurant and one of the items on the menu was buffalo wings. He said to the waitress, "What is that?" She said, "Buffalo Wings." He said, "You've never seen a buffalo, have you?" Of course, he knew what they were. He just couldn't pass up a chance to mess with a person's mind. Ah, the good ole days...

Great singing Bob! Sounds excellent! Yeah the food thing. I do sing sometimes after I eat - but practicing only - not in public. On a really full stomach it wouldn't be good. Especially if you are burping up it creates some havoc.
Keith
Dude - this hit home in a way that only you could understand tonight. I had a chicken parm dinner at the restaurant thats in the bar I DJ in, and tried to sing a few karaoke songs. Ohh my god. What a pain in the a$$. Not only was it horrifically difficult, but it made me feel twice as full as I did before I started. I am not completely worthless. Anyway, I thought you would appreciate my horror story. Cheers! Enigma1881
Same here as Bob/Videohere and a few others about the difficulty with singing on a full stomach. Obviously it seems to depend somewhat on the person (or maybe even more so on the size and bulk of the meal along with the difficulty level of the song). I usually notice it at home when I get the itch to crank out a few vocal lines or a song - and I'm usually testing my voice in terms of hitting not so easy parts or maybe full songs - without being mindful of the fact that I've just eaten. It can be brutal on the voice for me due to the weakened support and air capacity. (I read somewhere that Halford eats at least 5 hours before a show and that's probably not a bad idea for people who have difficulty with this). Xamedhi
I tend to overeat like crazy sometimes. Like, I went to the cinema last week and eat a full box of popcorn myself, and then after the movie we went to a restaurant and eat a giant hamburger that is, no kidding, like a 1.5 kg. After that I had barely some space for the fries, lol. I can't even think about singing with the stomach that full, there is just no space for my lungs to fill downwards at all haha What makes more of a problem for me though, is how sensible I am to eating before singing. I can't eat tomatoes, ketchup, spicy things, sugary things.. and stuff. I haven't tried bananas, though haha. But it is not a small change, it is a HUGE problem for me ! It can be the difference between singing 2 hours or 30 minutes . Even if I do a long warm up, and feel totally free, the moment I try to add a bit more volume to the headvoice it falls apart. Just like when you have a cold.
