Hi all! This is my first time on these forums, and I hope this is the right place for even beginning singers like me who want to improve/get some feedback. Last week I recorded a cover of this song from a popular anime, sung in Italian, originally by a female vocalist. I've never had vocal training, and I've never had anyone tell me what my voice type is. I am a 19 [20 in less than a month] - year old male, so I'm not sure if this means my larynx/voice is fully developed at this point. I'd appreciate any criticism or comments on my voice or possible voice type, and anything I can do to improve. Thanks.

You have a good voice and good pitch. Definitely, you could do musicals and you might get immediate work singing soundtrack for animated movies.

And, to me, it usually sounds awkward when a guy sings stuff written for a female but I think you did well on the r&b stuff. In the r&b songs, you were best on "Mistake." Kind of shaky, like you had not quite figured out where you vocal line should be for "Can't Let Go."

I also applaud where it sounds like you lowered the key of the song to where you voice is most dynamic and in control for the wide range of timbres in some of it. It allows you to express the intention of the music, rather than sounding forced or out of place.

One thing about the mix of cover recordings. The silibance is way sharp. You might use a de-esser plug in or adjust eq to back off that ringing 's' sound.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I had lowered the pitch of everything but I See the Light to about 6 half steps down to suit my range. I'm pretty sure it's A2-A/A#4, so I don't know what that makes me, since some days I'm only comfortable up to a G. In my head voice I can hit a C6 on a good day, but usually resonant only up to F#5/G5. Thanks for the heads-up on the sibilance, I listened to them again and noticed how sharp my s's were, I'll look for that plug in!

In pop music, it won't matter much what voice type you could be described as. As long as you have good pitch, tonality, and sound believable in the song and can do it with endurance, that's what matters.

Like Ray Wylie Hubbard says in the spoken part of "Redneck Mothers," "The question you have to ask yourself as a singer and a writer is, can I sing this song for the next forty years?"
