doing easier "eee's"

folks,

as you know i'm busy working trying to (consistently) nail that "waiting" c5sharp for singing "waiting for girl like you."

as a result, i have figured out a way to help anyone who struggles with phonating "eee's" (as in "even").

the key i have found is if you simply add just a touch of twang, raise your cheekbones, and sing the "ee" and "feel" for a sensation of a "pinhole" where the sound will feel released into that pinhole.

if you do it right, the whole "ee" gets so much easier to sing, and it gives you a really nice "whistley" "pinging" kind of sound.

if you think you are nasal, as i first did, pinch your nose and the sound won't alter.

i just wanted to articulate this from a non-instructor perspective. hope i've helped.

I think those are good ideas but don't forget that in order to sing strong ee's high up in your range, you may have to modify the vowel from ee to Ih or Eh. It depends. If you want a powerful ee, modify it to Ih and add a very slight cry and restraint color to the sound. If you want a "shouty" ee, modify it to Eh. Also, if you want a fairly thin, but piercing and loud ee, just twang the crap out of it and don't modify the ee at all. But just note that it won't have as much "body" as the other 2 methods.

I think Bob was describing his process of getting the piercing and loud ee, best supported, at least for him at that particular note, with twang supported by the inner "smile" movement.

it's all good ron and jonpall....what i was happy to discover for myself personally was this pinhole pocket where the sound just effortlessly came through...

another technique i use for myself, is a think the word eight (just think it) while i sing ee...got that from jeffery allan's book.

guys, i'm just over here working hard, experimenting, and trying to get to things that work for me and sound good.

it's like chest voice...in james lugo's dvd (highly recommended) he talks about pulling chest and spatty vocals have their place sometimes....go figure.

Bob, I have the feeling that this "pinhole pocket" you speak of is your soft palate and by focusing your sound there, you're increasing twang, which makes everything easier. Jamie Vendera says that this is the most important principle in singing, pretty much.

maybe you're right..it's so hard to pinpoint but it's almost like dialing in on it...like the old fashion slide rule dial tuning on your dad's old car radio. if you didn't tune the station just right there was static on each side....lol

one other soft palate sensation i get is one like the top of my mouth is ringing...that's a cool one too.

you see with me jonpall, all my singing life, i powered through all my vocals. the pressure to sing high and powerful in bands was really strong (and still is i suppose).

i truly believe in retrospect although i did so much wrong or not correct and healthy, i must have done some things okay that gave me power and a tone that i guess people seem to like.

now that i'm able to find ways to do this a lot easier, and so much more resonant, i'm so happy.

not boosting, (no way i'm i a primadonna), just happy.

i'm happy i found such a nice bunch of folks who have taught me so much.

what can i say?

Hey Guys,

Didn't mean to hijack this thread, but what do you think of my eees in mid range?

Do I need to add more twang?

PopVlad: Sounds pretty good as-is, but would be a bit better with a smidge more twang. That will balance out the tone of the ee which you have shaded toward Ih already.

Hmmm, don't you guys he could use a bit more "hold" or "cry" in the tone? To put a bit more body in the tone? Sounds a bit like pure head voice with twang (light metal-like-neutral or neutral with light twang in CVT terms). I could be wrong, though.

Hey jonpall,

I know where you're cominig from with that. It IS on a hedier side.

So I've decided to add more "support" just for the sake of it.

Does it have more "body" now?

I think it's a bit woofy, but I reckon that's gona go away once I get a hold of support AND add a bit of twang.

What do you guys think?
