VideoHere
here are two vocalists side by side. (i hope no one objects to the r-rated bedroom scene here.) the one on the left side of the bed is using "cry", and the one on the right "twang." the vocals begin at 2:05! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whuvhUXu0GU&feature=related
forgivendays
Cool thanks! That explains them. So "twang" is "nasal" and cry is a dropped larynx, narrow vowel, right? Is it still cry if I'm in falsetto? I couldn't reach the pitch he was speaking at edit: Wait, I don't think that has anything to do with the nose. I got the same sound, only clearer, by singing upwards in my throat if that makes any sense.

Snorth
Morid: Yes, if "nasal" is not actually nasal. As steven hints at, twanging can be done with a closed velum port(the nose passage) if you wish.
jonpall
Although the bear on the right is not the worst example in the world of twang, the one of the left isn't really doing a cry. The dopy sound is NOT the same as a cry. You can do either or both at the same time. And actually, if you cry like Yogi bear ... hmmmm....? A good way to think about the cry sound is like a kid saying "mommy, I don't wanna". It's really holding your breath and speaking or singing, in many ways. That's why it's good for singing because it reduces breath, which is good for the high part of your voice. But if you overdo the cry you'll just sound like a whiney singer, so don't overdo it :)

jonpall
Ok, here I'm doing an example of how to use a "moaning" sound to discover curbing. Note that I don't claim to be a master of this so I'm sure there are people who can do this better and also note that I'm allowing myself to be totally silly by moaning like a little kid in front of y'all http://www.box.net/shared/revh0z9ccb I'm overdoing the moan a bit here (especially before the song starts at the end) to illustrate my point but when you use curbing in a song, don't use quite as much moan/hold/cry, ok? :)
