Are the vocal chords visible?

I was looking at a mirror while singing and saw two "sides" behind the uvula coming closer the higher I sang. Are these the vocal chords? And is it correct technique, vocal chords or not, when these things are getting closer the higher I sing?

Morid: Those are not your vocal cords, but probably the pillars of the fauces.

Your vocal bands are almost horizontal in your larynx. Connected on the inside of the Thyroid cartilege, and extending back to the arytenoid cartileges. If you'll take a minute and google the term 'thyroid cartilege', you'll find lots of great pictures and diagrams.
