KillerKu
Hey, I've been playing around with a new pitch training thing and have noticed huge progress with my relative pitching. Take an instrument and drone (sustain) a note. It can any note. Now sing a different note, and try to 'see' the distance between the note you're singing and the note you're playing based on what your voice sounds like. Once you're pretty confident you know the distance, check the note on the instrument and see if it matches the interval in your head. It's already helping immensely with harmonies and improvization for me, but is also tightening up my my pitch. It's a cool exercise you can even hum to quietly. I can do it while people sleep and improve my voice even when full blast singing isn't on the table. So yeah, real simple: 1. Sustain note 2. Sing any harmony 3. Guess how far away your voice is from the instrument 4. Check with the instrument (if you guess wrong you can find the note on the instrument you were singing) 5. Eventually check less and less often, and see if you are still 'in the right place' relatively while doing more elaborate melodies. This has been one of my favorites yet so far. And it really allows me to be musical too and compose lots of melodies while training pitch. It was too good not to pass along to you guys. I guess it's similar to sports, where you can, for example, increase distance to the basket while practicing basketball shots. Whenever you step further away and miss a shot you either go back one step and measure how much higher you have to jump or wait until you hit it and remember how you did it for further reference.
