Work on my technique

I have tried to go back to the drawing board and work hard on my technique over the last 2-3 weeks.  The things I have attempted to improve are 

 

1.  Raising of the soft palete(prefer to do this by smiling and think of yawning)

2.  Altered my recording technique to record RAW vocals instead of recording with effects

3.  Cutting down on over supporting on "easy" portions of the song 

 

To make matters tough, I had a bad cough over the last week or so and had a deep baritone speaking voice which I usually dont! (must say it sounded majestic while it lasted :-) )  And yesterday was the first day I could sing without coughing.  

 

This was done in one take, so I know that there are pitch issues, and even a couple of instances where my voice sounds not "warmed up" and has an unintended distorted effect.  After my infection, I am not yet fully recovered, where I can sing for a long duration.

I would love to hear your views specifically around nasality and any other technical glitches you spot.

I think it's definitely approaching more mass appeal over the extreme nasality. The nasality is still there. It's improving. I'm not sure the best way to advise proceeding though.

 

I also like your lower voice, that is allowed to go breathy and have some intimacy there. So that's cool.

If it works for you then good! I teach a little bit but never tell anybody to raise their soft plate, in fact the less they try to make a sound the better.

 

@ 0:40: you need to sing more legato there. The phrase is all chopped up! You need to think one phrase not x different pitches you have to hit or words. That will improve your support.

 

You sound more natural than when I first heard you but I think you can still find a deeper sound. Sounds like your larynx is on the high side and it gets a little tight in the chorus.

 

Good job since this is one take :). If you can't sing it in one take you can't sing it!

I had to look up to see what "legato" meant!  Very interesting.. It is so straightforward and yet I have never thought about it this way! 

 

How do I solve "high larynx"

To me legato and support are quite related. Support does not mean "push down real hard" in my book.

 

How do I solve "high larynx"

 

This points back to the "find a natural sound for your voice" and "don't go into singing mode" business. Often times I will tell people to speak the lyrics first, pay attention to how that feels and then sing them. If that works we're good because it means they don't need to further manipulate their sound by trying to yawn and things like that...  Or I will simply ask them to sing with a deeper sound, make them pretend they're Barry White or something... It doesn't matter as long as they get into the right place.

 

I think most people have a wrong perception of their voice, some guys I've taught need to think they are opera singers in order to sing with a natural sound. Obviously with time the brain accepts the new sound as being the correct one but it doesn't happen overnight.

 

Also vowels and consonants have different tendencies and you can use that to steer someone's voice.

Excellent job Aravindmadis! You made such an enormous progress dialing down the nasal sound. Do you remember that sometime ago I told you that sometimes you sound as a cartoon? Not anymore my friend! Keep on rocking man!!!  :D

 

Gee... Thanks for your kind words.. I work really hard and I am happy that I am able to make some progress.  What really helped me is the understanding the physiology behind nasality and also I stopped recording with effects.  The latter was more important than I had imagined.  With my physiology, I think it is very easy for me to get a grating/nasal sound, which I don't realize, but I am working hard to build the muscle memory to avoid it.

I also like the improvement of the mix, great change
 
Yes, there is still nasality, but it does not annoy at all... I would take a little more of it, personal taste  
 
Finally, I think you chose a right song for your voice and style

Have you ever been diving? I mean, really diving, water and stuff. If yes, then you are probably able to close your airway to nostrills before a dive. I am not talking about putting your hand on your nose and closing the nostrills. I mean closing the nasal airway in a natural way. If you are able to do it then know that it's your soft pallate that's doing it. This is exactly what it does and it's the way you can control it.
