Elvis
Ok just a quick question. I currently dont have a place to train my singing other than my flat. But there are neighbours i annoy and the isolation is ridiculously bad. Now sometimes i feel like im holding back even tough i dont really do ti consciously. So the question is, can this unwanted holding back out of fear of alerting neighbours, cause some choking and squeezing while practising? Cuz sometimes i dont even go that high and a feel fatigued like im squeezing my throat to reduce volume.
ronws
Yes, because training will become habit. You will learn to stifle yourself so, you are not learning to sing, you are learning to not sing. Stop it. Either go somewhere you can sing and let it loose, or sing where you are. Until you actually share with us a sound file of your neighbors complaining about your singing, and it needs to be either in English or somehow translated so that we can know what they are saying, I will simply treat this idea of neighbors being offended as conjecture and a sign of your insecurity. Well she actually called my mother in law( her landlord) to make me stop singing. And my mother in law doesent have a problen with it. She actually encourages me to pracrice. So believe me if i was insecure i wouldnt be posting my briliantly bad breaks and sounds here But hint recieved. Ill try to look for a sanctuary :)
Administrator Robert Lunte Posted March 21, 2015 Administrator Share Posted March 21, 2015 Now sometimes i feel like im holding back even tough i dont really do ti consciously. Yes, this is a major problem... you have to fix this. You have to find a place where you can train freely, loudly if you want to or need to with no distractions. If you feeling self conscious about you singing because of the neighbors, you are really handicapping your progress. You have to find a place to train where you can have privacy. In the book I make several suggestions regarding this issue... refer to the book.

KillerKu
Yes, it can in a huge way. On the flip side, it can also help you learn to sing at a more medium volume if you're like me. While I'd like to move to a place where extreme volumes are acceptable (and it actually looks like I'll be moving within the next year), a lot of vocal progress for me was ironically made because I couldn't brute force and raw power everything. It helped me find headier voices, lighter mix sensations, and all that. I think the key is when singing softer, sing lighter, not pinched or squeezed. Start light and build. My instinct was to try to strangle or squeeze a heavier voice to shut it up. Now that I've thought of 'building' into the volume rather than holding back, it's been extremely helpful on all aspects of my singing, and in retrospect I wouldn't change this development for me personally. There is no way I could have sung a song like this prior to exploring different areas of the voice volume wise. But there was definitely some pressed phonation that I found first. So advice for anyone looking, build a lighter and freer voice up. Years back, every note would have been shouted and flipping into falsetto all the time. So don't neglect medium volume singing, it expresses a totally different thing than shouting or screaming.

ronws
I just called my grandfather and he gave me a room in hisbhouse where i can train my hearth out and scream like a mad man without consequences. thanks guys for support. Made me rethink the way i practice Former member Tommy was also, among other things, a martial arts instructor. His advice in class works in singing, too. "Train how you will fight." In fighter training, you shouldn't train one way then fight another. Make habits out what works in a fight. When I was taking Tae Kwon Do and aiki-jujutsu back in the mid-80's, one of the instructor's friends would come into class. During open sparring, he taught me valuable things. He was only an inch or so shorter than I and about the same build. He pointed out that us tall guys can block most kicks from shorter people with our shins, rather than reaching down to block. Reaching down opens you up and brings your face into their range. Instead, raise up the knee. Worked like a charm. Another classmate liked to roundhouse kick to the cup. So, I tried that once. The bone of the upper part of your shin is one of the hardest bones in the body, on par in strength with your skull. Anyway, so this cup-kicker did his signature move. And hurt himself, as the instep of his foot impacted on my shin bone. He missed a few days of work and one class. By the next class, he was back, with a little limp for a while. So, I practiced that. Same with singing. If you are going to be a rock singer with loads of acoustic projection from your body, you need to do that from the start and get those habits going. It's not so much "building muscle" as it is conditioning it and your reflexes to endure repeated use. How awesome that you now have your own "singer's studio." So, increase your awesomeness and later, when you are ready, train as a TVS teacher and you will be the croatian connection for TVS, literally and figuratively. Before you know it, Robert will be flying there to do master classes for those in the balkan areas.

Ive been thinking of what would happen if a small place like Pula (60k) citizes, in a beautiful Adriatic sea had a vocal workshop from a renowned coach. Pula has an amazing music scene. Tons of bands and talented people. A friend of mine even sang with Michael Bolton in our beautiful Amphiteather. I bet if i set my mind to it i could run a preety successful vocal coaching herebin Pula in a feeeeeew years. Also i wanted to mention that there is NO VOCAL COACH in Pula. Good or bad.
