Although I like raspy singing, I also want to be able to sing clean stuff so this is an example of the latter.

I've been working on getting just the right amount of high and low frequencies in my tone. I don't want it to sound too hooty and not too thin and twangy either. I do want slightly more high frequencies in my tone when I sing high rasp, but here I'm looking for a more balance of overtones. Perhaps you guys can comment on if you think my tone needs more of something or less of something?

It sounds good jonpall, with a nice microphone you could record a track right now. At your curbing level right now I think it's all a matter of artistic choice. I would have prefered abit more twang and/or just a hint of distortion here and there to spice it up with more dynamics but that is just my taste. :)

Hey Jon,

Your voice sounds full, your "ees" are really sth. I think you've done a great job.

If there is one thing I could say, it would be that depending on the musical background you might have to lessen your "hold".

My estimate is, if you were to sing over a soft ballad or pop song, your voice might come across as too powerful whereas if it were hard rock, it'd match the music.

Of course it's hard to know without hearing the full mix, it's just sth a producer would contemplate on.

Other than that - which, again, might be just in my head - I think you've achieved a really full sounding voice without any sign of strain or getting out of the "mode".

To me, your tone sounds great! and you have your air balance really under control. Sounds like you really focused on getting that right. One thing I would personally try and see how it worked out would be to have some more moderate volumes or I guess as has been pointed out, more dynamic variance. Overall great job man!

folks, i just wanted everyone to know you all sound great but to critique you is just something i'm not comfortable doing. i hope you'll respect my opinion.) i just prefer to hang out at the technique forum. bob

I'm with you, Bob. I don't really like critiquing and so much of what we do is really just stylistic choices.

Jonpall, you sang a really clean "I still haven't found (what I'm looking for)." Which was way cool. And it's dinstinctive and it's you. I love the vibrato you have. So, in my perspective, "critiquing" based on a comparison to Bono's version would be ineffective. It sounded technically perfect and just as importantly, it sounded like you had an emotional investment in the song. You felt it, sang it like you wrote, as if the lyrics were written from your life. And that makes a hit.

Plus, believe it or not, I prefer applauding what was good and people will direct themselves. And the whole thing was good.

And, by the way, excellent tone and support on "I've been waiting."

Thanks guys. You're too kind. I too, tend to prefer saying constructive things to people instead of saying "you suck" or something without an explanation. It's better to say something like "...cheer up dude, you simply need a bit higher larynx and you'll be there!", or "...hey man, I suggest a bit less air and you'll be surprised at how much it helps you!", as an example.

This is pretty cool, jonpall! I like the tone of your voice, it's got a nice color to it. Maybe in this U2 song, you shouldn't sustain the vibrato for that long during the verse. I think the other guy sings the song in a bit more 'quicker' pace. Overall, I like it!

Yeah, Stan, that was part of my point. If he wants to do it like Bono, then he would have to "de-tune" his voice a bit. Bono has more rasp and does parts of this song in a falsetto that still sounds meaty, if that can be said. But jonpall's version still had the same intensity and feeling, just in his own voice. And jonpall didn't do anything wrong, just different and it was a good performance.

still rockin' it brother. My personal preference would be along the lines of what Snorth suggested(because your rasp sounds GREAT.) But the technique sounds solid(and balanced too.) I would be interested in hearing you play around with a slightly lower larynx...but only out of sheer curiosity(it sounds great as is.)

Everybody loves rasp, it seems, lol. Yeah, me too. If I were to record it, I'd probably put some rasp in it. But in this case I was more using it as a vehicle to practise my clean, high sound. Everyone's comments are very helpful. I'm taking it all in and deciding for myself which ones make sense for me and practising accordingly. Thanks, analog and you all, I really appreciate it.

And, again, my comments were not meant as criticisms or suggestions for a "better" performance. Your performance was just fine. And even though I suggested what it would take to sound like Bono, that was not meant that you should do that, though you would do a fine job on that, as well.

I like your clean voice. Especially as you did the song "One" and "White Wedding" in your two posted videos.
