I think Brett should stick to making slick marketed videos and never EVER sing publicly again! Oh man he's so off key and has piss poor ability as an actual singer. In his promo videos he comes across impressively and can lip bubble with the best of them. Singing songs like these are NOT doing much for his credibility. I'm as serious as a heart attack too. Maybe he should train with Robert Lunte and learn techniques that actually translate into real performances at concert volume levels. ;)

I think you said that out loud. I agree and I hate saying that about another person. And I agree with Jens, too. The newest singer or singers here are doing a better job than he did. I've heard rumor that he was sick that night but still, I don't see how that affects pitch recognition. I mean, I totally believe in doing a song your own way and that's what I do, even if someone thinks my tone is light and airy in recording. But I wonder who's way was this way, especially on "Bohemian Rhapsody." I've often noted that most karaoke events are exercises in torture. People who don't have much singing skill start drinking, which normally doesn't help singing ability, and then, get up and sing. But they are still worthy of applause because they got up in front of people and sang, and that is a huge battle, right there. But this was painful, maybe moreso because he is an instructor. If he was just a person no one knew, like a slightly inebriated electrician or somesuch, it would be "okay."

In the rocking the french quarter video, he was hitting some high notes, they just didn't seem to be in relation to the song. I've seen a few of his instructional videos but those are only exercises and his students actually do all the actual song examples.

I don't know. I don't like criticizing another singer because I, like most everyone here, knows what it takes to perfect our craft and the emotional investment we have in it.

And I agree. He could use a Lunte intervention.

Ive heard the bohemian rapsody thing before. Even though he seems pretty tone deaf, I dont think his actual tone is unhealthy (?)

Seems to me a bit like a boxer who has a glass jaw and just cant make it through a match, but can still have valid opinions on boxing training for others.

...oh,,, this isnt good?

What do you think that's good about it? Yes, he can make some high notes but singing is more than just squeezing out a note. It needs to be in a song, related to the music of the song. And, I might also add, a singer hsa to engage the audience.

In contrast, here's a performance, even though it's a "studio" recording it's live in studio. And the singer is not singing to his bandmates or to equipment. He is singing to an audience, even if the studio is empty. Not even moving from one spot, he conveys the entire piece through voice and body language. And on pitch and in time.

Between this guy and Brett Manning, who can hit a higher note? Don't know, don't care. The highest note is not important. But singing the song and having a tone and timing relevant to the music and the ability to relate to the audience is key.

Well, maybe Im wrong about the sarcasm, but I doubt anyone would seriously think the first two clips are 'amazing' and 'wow'.

Strangely though, he doesnt seem at all tone deaf in jonpalls clip, in fact he does that quite nicely. Maybe his prob is when he tries to sing with power

I've heard him say on more than one youtube clip that he likes to actually sing with intentionally bad technique, stuff like rasp and breathiness, etc. I guess he took those things a step too far in those clips.

Im not sure what he means by that, but personally, I have less fun trying to sing somewhat correctly than I have doing it all wrong and sounding like a dying cat.

Sadly, no...when I dont give a crap about what it sounds like and just sing and strum, I have more fun...it just sounds so bad unfortunately...part of the remedy is of course simple; get to a point where correct technique is something you dont have to think about. But there is another issue: what first drew me to listening to hard rockers like Dio was mainly the huge sound he was roaring out, but also the image that he was ferociously tearing his throat out to get there. I loved tearing my throat out in rage, if it wasnt for the fact that it was physically impossible to do more than 1 or 2 tunes (pretty badly) that way, so I'll admtit it was a bit of a let down to find out that the exact opposite is the correct way to do it. Even more frustrating: Now I cant listen to someone whos tearing their throat out because it sounds so uncomfortable. Picking up a book on singing correctly screwed me up for life :p

Hi CryingSpell,

In case you aren't being sarcastic.

Brett Manning is a bit of an institution so I think people hold him to a higher standard then they might the average person that would like to be a singer.

Lots of the people that have replied, are VERY good singers (not me, I am just learning ;) ) and this forum is has lots of people that sing live which can be very differnt from studio work in terms of how you have to sing etc. So they are really good at what he is trying to do.

I learned a lot from Brett, and if you like his singing then that is all that really matters. I think though, that if you listen to some the people who have responded, ( like Snax and Jens and many others) you will be as impressed with them as you have been with Brett if not more so.

Also, though I did learn a lot from Brett and Singing Success, there are many other programs that provide a more complete approach and teach techniques that he doesn't. There are many good training programs, and though I love the exrcises he has and his range extension tricks my vary favorit system is the Complete Vocal Technique, from The Complete Voice Institue. It is way cheaper than Singing Success and though it doesnt have all the same neat exercises, it can help you learn to sing loud enough to sing with a live band ;) (which may be something that Brett is not so good at doing compared to some other singers.)

Anyway, I hope this is helpful, and I hope you stick around and listen to some of these guys on the forums, they are really good!

Oh and if you are being sarcastic, give the poor guy a break. It is hard to sound good all the time, and people shouldn't be afraid to sing if it makes them happy. He isn't a bad teacher.

Doug

To be honest I found it very bad. But I think it might be a return problem, as the guy can sing on pitch, as jonpall showed.

... And I consider singing on pitch less important than entertaining the audience, which does not come from erm... Singing high pitched notes unrelated to anything in the song :(

Guys - I think the quality of the clips is terrible (audio quality) in the bohemian rhapsody clip the whole audience is singing along too.

Ive taken lessons from Brett in person and via skype. He is a very patient and enthusiastic teacher.

Ive also listened to his solo recordings and he can sing - they are on itunes for sale.

The bottom line is that you can still be a great teacher even if you cant do something at the pinnacle of its performance.

Did every olympic figure skating coach win a gold medal? Of course not -

If you can coax the great performances out of your students, than that is what is most important.

But again I dont think these clips are representative of Brett's true ability

-Freddy
