Hey all,

For those of you that are wondering what this about, check out the following link and please join us:

It's about that time. It's been decided that, this month, we will run two challenges at once. Two separate challenge threads will be created. Everyone is greatly encouraged to participate in both of these. Even if you don't have time to mix two great tracks, try to get something done for each and post it in the corresponding challenge topics. Given the goal of these challenges is to get everybody really racking their musical brains and get everyone out of their comfort zone at one point or another, we did Rock this month, so Rock will not be an option for June, but it will show back up in the poll that will be created on June 26th for July's challenge. HOWEVER, just because a Rock song won't be chosen this month, it does NOT mean that you cannot take one of the songs that we end up choosing and sing it Rock style. As a matter of fact, if Rock is your absolute favorite style, it is encouraged that you do take one of these songs and sing it that way. It is also encouraged that you try to learn to sing in the style of the genres that are selected. We are NOT prohibiting styles, we are switching genres.

There are 7 choices for this month's challenge, and the two genres with the highest number of votes will be chosen. Voting will go on until May 31st (120 hours from now). At that point, we will go about selecting the songs we will be singing during June.

June's challenges will begin June 6th and end on July 5th.

Voting for the genre selection of July's challenge will begin on June 26th and end on July 1st. July's challenge begins July 6th.

These are the choices for this month's poll:

R&B

Country

Blues

Pop

Folk

Jazz

Gospel

Let the voting begin!

I gave 1 vote to each except country. I was thinking if we go with pop, the song Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush would be a great head voice test for all.

Maybe a Journey or Steve Perry song would be cool too.

For Gospel, the only songs I know are "Michael row the boat ashore" and "Movin on up" from the Jeffersons theme. Those could be cool as well.

Cool, Jabroni!

Kate Bush sounds cool. I thought Journey would be Rock, but I guess we'll see what the other guys say.

As far as Pop goes, something from Michael Jackson or Phil Collins might be cool. Maybe even really take a dive and choose something current from the top 40.

I know a few gospel songs as well. Take my Hand, Precious Lord is one of them.

Country and Blues sound great too.

Yeah, Rob. We're avoiding consecutive genre repeats. However, just because we're choosing songs this month from different genres, it doesn't mean that people can't sing those songs with a Rock or Metal styling. It's encouraged.to approach songs from different genres with vocal styles from other genres. Country is doing good right now, so if that gets selected as one of the genres, I may approach it and try to interpret it from an R&B place. It's all about mixing things up one way or another.

I mentioned this in the thread addressing rules and guidelines, but I've also edited the instructions in my first post here, in order to make things clear.

I voted country. If we don't do it this time around, that's fine. But I have a few suggestions, if we do.

"All My Rowdy Friends" by Hank Williams, Jr

"You Never Even Called Me By My Name" as recorded by David Allan Coe, though he did not write it.

"Redneck Mothers" by Ray Wylie Hubbard

Granted, these are outlaw country songs.

How about "Train Train" by Blackfoot? Is it considered Country music?! If not, I suggest "I can't make you love me" by Bonnie Raitt... yeah, I'm a Rocker :bang: with a soft spot for romantic songs, suit me... :P

Merle Haggard said "His voice was like a Stradivarius violin: one of the greatest instruments ever made." ....talking of course about the great George Jones. RIP

If any of you have never heard this song, do yourself a favor and listen to the whole thing. His tone and control are really amazing. And the lyrics are classic.

Train, Train would be good and a hit with my wife. It is her favorite song by Blackfoot and one of her favorites, in general.

Just a couple of old hippies grooving along ...

I'm not overly versed in country music as most of modern country released in my lifetime. I do like some of the older material, often pre 70s. I think something with traditional country harmonies would be most intriguing and challenging vocally:

But I'll leave it to genre fans to pick something more universal.

@Bzean- Yeah, I've heard the Neville version. He's another monster vocalist imo. The Grand Tour is definitely the quintessential "my woman left me" song. Neville really makes you feel his pain.

Alright, everyone. Voting has now finished. It's interesting how things happen, because we decided to do two challenges this month and it just so happens we ended up in a tie. Both of the tying genres have been selected. This month, we're going to be doing Country and Jazz!

Great job, everyone! May's challenge ended on the 2nd. Big thanks and a pat on the back to everyone who found the time to get involved!

Alright. I've been thinking about how we're going to do this without really messing with the timelines and everything. This is what I've come up with. For the next 72 hours (3 days), everyone will recommend up to two songs for each of the challenge genres (you can recommend two songs for Jazz, and two songs for Country). At the end of this 3 day period, I will use a program to randomly select 5 songs from each pool of songs (5 songs from the pool of Country suggestions and 5 from the pool of Jazz suggestions). I will post a video of this being done so that the integrity is preserved. After 5 songs are chosen for each genre, we will open up voting for 3 days. and that's how we'll decide the winning song.

The challenges will now start on the 9th, as soon as the voting is over. These challenges will end on July 5th. Basically, what's happening here, is we're moving the end date back 3 days so that we can move the start date back 3 days and choose our songs. July's challenge will start on July 6th. Voting for what we're going to do in July will still open June 26th.

As for how we'll decide things for July, suggestions are welcome. I had an idea, but it seems to be slipping my mind right now, lol.

So, go ahead and start suggesting songs. If you already have suggested some, the first two that you suggested will be chosen to go into the pool. You also have until 11:59 EST June 6th to revise your suggestions.
