hiya folks,

just jumpin' back in here with you all. hope you're glad to have me.

i gotta tell ya: i took first place prize in a local singing competition here in ny (usa) last week! westchester county's 2010 golden idol competiton over-50 category. i sang "at last," "i want to know what love is," and "change is gonna come." (encore.) this qualifies me for the 2010 westchester all-star show.

it was between me and an opera singer. when i was announced the winner, i saw the surprise in the opera singer's face. (sadly, he had the "opera singer snobbery," neck scarf thing, "how could i possibly lose" thing going on.)

when i turned around later to talk with him, i saw he had already left and was headed to his car.

i felt this need to connect with him. i caught up with him and told him flat out, "i wanted to you to know that although i have won this competition, i, more than anyone else in that auditorium, knows what it takes to sing like you did. you were great. me, i'm not opera caliber...and i so truly respect your skill and technique.

seeing that my intent to flatter and show my respect for him had worked, he turned around and said to me...."you were great as well." "you deserve to win, because you sang with your heart."

needless to say i floated out of that place!

Well done, Bob, in all facets. Just as important as singing well, you were able to see past the apparent moods of the runner-up and connect with him. That was a "Ronnie James Dio" moment, with attendant grace, humility, and dignity. You represent what is best in all of us.

Great story! Congrats!

I dunno about Dio though...he's one of my top idols and was #1 for me for decades. I got to interview him once for a radio station and didnt connect with him at all as a person. I said that I could sometimes hear a little Elvis in him and he was quite offended which sort of set the mood for the rest of the interview. My personal god apparently thought I was a bit of an ignorant twat lol...in interviews on youtube he usually seems very sensible, although there are a couple where he's bad-tempered, a series taken in their tour bus and another one where he wishes that vivanne campbell would die.

It's cool to see that we have a mixture of different levels of singers on this forum. People who are just starting out who aren't so good (ala me) and then people out there with competition winning voices. I think it's awesome you went to find the runner up afterwards too. Congratulations on your big win and good luck in the future contest. Let us know how it goes; I hope you win.

Sorry, Matt. I still stand by what I said, even if you ticked off Dio.

But at least you are in good company.
