You have the same problem that 99% of people who learn to sing high notes and then make an attempt at a Journey song have. Your larynx is too high and your vowels are not modified.
Steve Perry extensively modified his vocal tract to get the powerful sound that you hear. Some even say that he did it to the point that the lyrics become difficult to understand at times. You cannot sing Journey with a high larynx and with vowels the way that they are placed forward. You have to have darker vowels and a low larynx to get a big powerful tone.
I would check out Rob's recent video on dampening the larynx if I were you.

All of this stuff is horridly out of sync with the digital age. There should be something like Itunes where you can purchase a license to post a cover song on YouTube for 99 cents or hell $2-3. That would generate millions of dollars in revenue for the industry.
Yes Limelight is kind of helping things, but while $15 is totally reasonable for a mechanical license, the average person who just wants to post a video of them singing a song on YouTube for no commercial purposes whatsoever isn't going to pay that.
