I heard this song a few minutes ago, and decided on spur of the moment to try an acapella cover just for a bit of fun. It's a lot different to my preferred style, but at least it's a bit louder. I did this is one take, and haven't even listened back to it myself, so it's probably terrible. If it is, please let me down gently

If you can do both, I definitely think you should! If you're performing live, it'd always be great to have that unpredictability and freedom to go for either depending on your mood, the crowd etc. A combination of both versions would sound incredible though, if done right.
I'd really like to hear your take on the NIN version, if you ever put it up!

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply Owen!
I can definitely see where you're coming from with your criticism of the chorus, and I think you make a very good point. I have very little experience with different singing techniques and have had no vocal lessons yet, but as you said, I'll keep practicing and hopefully improve on it!
I wasn't too sure about it myself, but I'm very glad to hear that I managed to get the passion and emotion of the song across in my cover because, exactly as you said, it's what singing is about. To be compared to Trent in that sense in any way is just amazing, and very motivating for me. I'm not sure about performing live just yet, but maybe at some point in the future
Again, thank you for your kind words & advice, and I'm delighted that you enjoyed it :)

This is a song that means quite a lot to me, for a few reasons and because of this it's one that I really love singing along to. Unfortunately, I couldn't find an instrumental version of the song, so Trent Reznor's vocals are still faintly audible in the background. Anyway give it a listen, if you want to, and any feedback will be greatly appreciated;)

I liked it. And it was refreshing because you don't sound like Corey. He has a more baritonic and heavier voice than you have. So, your version is good precisely because it does not invite comparison and should be judged on its own merit.
Granted, others are going to give you advice on how to sound like Corey because it seems like, in popular and rock music, the original singer becomes the sound ideal to aim for.
Not so, in my book. I thought this was good.
Thank you for your kind words :)

hi andi, thats not bad, however you lack some volume in your voice, also the high parts should have more power from below! do you take any singing lessons? i think you hit the pitch quite well and the feeling for the song is also there (of course there is room for improvement), but what i notice most is that there is not enough power and passion behind. If you don't take already some and you have the oportunity to take lessons i would advice you to do so, because I think you are missing some basic techniques. But I also think that you could pretty fast sound like you want to if you have the right teacher! BR, Chris
Thanks Chris, I appreciate you taking the time to listen and reply
No, I've never had any singing lessons at all. I never put much thought into the idea of singing until now, to be honest. If I can find any vocal teachers near where I am, I'll definitely consider getting lessons.
Thanks again for your opinion :)

I've been considering trying out for a local indie/alternative band and just wanted an opinion on my voice (more about potential rather than the actual performance) . This isn't my strongest song, but I enjoy singing it anyway.

Thanks mvrasseli, I've always had trouble with Adam Duritz's songs, so that's pretty encouraging!
