  1. Thanks for listening and for the kind words, guys! Olem, you are right that Maiden may have better songs than this one! However, we are one of 4 bands that will play that evening, and while all the other choose the most known tunes, we've decided to go with some of the less popular:) And it's not the only song from "Brave New World" album we plan to rehearse!

Generally speaking, Bruce stuff has always been very difficult for me to sing, so having to play guitar simultaneously I'm forced to choose rather the easiest songs - Mercenary definitely being one of them;)

  2. Hi!

Here's a Nightwish cover that I did. Don't worry - I'm not doing any Tarja parts :D Only Marco Hietala's. I really like the twangy, yet warm tone, so i tried to play around with this concept.

I'm very open to any kind of critique concerning technique, intonation, interpretation, but also my pronounciation. There are a lot of native English speakers here on the forum - maybe you can help me out with my accent? Do you think Hietala's pronounciation is perfect or can you tell that it's not his first language?

  3. Olem,

I don't know the program you've mentioned, but try to describe the scheme of your mic-computer-headphones connection. Tell me where you plug what and what knobs you use to adjust volume. Do you use Windows mixer and is there a mixer in this Reaper software.

The right mix in your headphones is essential, so I would take my time to figure out how to do it if I were you. Describe the connection scheme and we might be able to help you.

  4. Olem, check your headphone mix - if it's to loud or to low, this might be causing problems with singing in tune. It's also a good idea to record the vocal melody on an instrument and sing along it while recording. It's mostly about paying more attention and being able to hear both backing track and yourself while singing.

When it comes to the chorus, chech out Kevin Richard's tips:

  5. Thanks for the feedback!

Rofleren: I added the harmonies last minute, maybe it wasn't the best decision:)

Dr. Evil: Maybe you're right... I think there is uncountable ways of interpreting this song - the original is mostly 'sang', while f.ex. Ted Neeley version comes closer to a prayer, sometimes it's almost spoken, there's more acting in it. I think I'm somewhere in between on this scale.

Ron, Owen: Neeley's version is my favourite, it's nice that you hear some similarities, but I don't think I can come close to it. I get tears in my eyes every time I listen to his New York live performance... Ron, maybe you could post a link to your interpretation here?

Owen: I've been working with 4 Pillars for about 6 months, but definitely not as intensively as I should. Are you also training with it? If yes, I'm sure it will grant you the range that you need to sing Gethsemane:)

  6. Oh cool, that is good to know! Thanks for sharing that... Is this Ben? I think this is Ben... hope we can train again soon Ben. BTW, as far as 'old school' is concerned, this song was already 'old school' when I was 18 and first started listening to this tune. It actually is more the generation before me... its very 70s, I'm more of a kid from the 80s... that is why voice technique and great singing is something that has become who I am. Seems the serious focus on great trained vocals seemed to crap out after the 80s a bit... we had to endure the grunge and the scream movements... now hopefully, good singing is more valued and coming back.

It's not Bob, it's Lukasz, your student from Poland:) I'm also looking forward to having some more lessons with you (this autumn hopefully). Take care!

  7. Thanks for all the positive responses guys:) I'll record the whole thing as soon as I can.

I just want to mention - the A5's in my clip are the notes I never could hit. I'm only able to do it thanks to Robert's system "4 Pillars", his help via skype and his workouts for 'Extreme Pitch Scream'. That's a pretty cool feeling to finally break the roof that has been limiting the access to your highest heights:)

    Cheers!

  8. Thanks for the positive feedback, guys:)

Enander: You are right, I used a slightly different approach on the verses and the chorus. The distortion in verses has a 'bigger grain', if you know what I mean. I also think it's great to hear many people trying their best on the same song:) Waiting for your take on "Painkiller";]

Daug: Thanks for the advice, I'll see if it works. I like your version very much. What do you mean by softer onsets?
