  1. Adoney: So I tried projecting more and the tone does feel more natural but still somewhat doesn't match the color I like to use with my chest voice (lots of compression(?)). I don't know how to explain it but I can't find the natural next step in that style when I go up to head voice. Owen: Thanks a lot for the advice. Could you recommend some vocal technique exercises? At the moment, I only do lip rolls, sirens in 'ooh', dopey 'mum' and 'gug' (gug is the one i have a lot of trouble doing while mixing, so I work on this a lot).
  2. So I had some hours without anyone in the house and recorded some of my singing progress. It's certainly easier to sing stuff that was difficult before. My concern is that I hear my voice all over the place, in terms of tone. It doesn't feel consistent. I don't know whether this is me being overly self-conscious or not, so I thought I'd get some of you to help me out Click Me! You can also check my progress by listening to the other tracks in my profile. Any suggestions on what to work on to improve is also very much appreciated!
  3. David : Remove my clip? It's still there... Unless SoundCloud is being an assh. Update; I redid the whole thing HERE I wasn't holding back this time. I do have problems with my low head voice notes. Them being very vulnerable and therefore I have to be gentle which ends up making it sound weak. What exercises should I do to strengthen them? Also sorry for the messy tempo and guitar, I did everything on the iOS version of GarageBand ^-^"
  4. Lord_Adōn and MDEW : Yeah I was kinda holding back in that recording as it was late into the night. I should know better than to show a clip that I'm not singing fully in, I'll record another one soon and maybe it will add more strength to it . However even when I sing with emotion and strength the tone isn't too far from this recording. JustinOthersinger : Hello, thank you for your post! It was very informative and I feel a bit more learned! I've been trying the "H" aspiration thing, but I'm not sure whether I'm doing it correctly. Perhaps you could send me a short audio clip of how it's supposed to sound like? Thanks!
  5. I've been trying to sing and cover a lot of stuff by a band by the name of ONE OK ROCK recently. I can hit the notes fine and stuff but I'm not satisfied with my tone. So I decided to post here to ask whether there's anything I can improve my tone to do the original singer more justice. First here's a clip of me singing (don't mind the crappy guitar and stuff) And here's the original: Any other critique is greatly appreciated!
  6. Just a short cover of the last chorus. As always, I'm looking for honest, sincere, brutal critique. I like it but I'm not sure whether that's cause I've come to terms with how my voice sounds.
  7. Ahh, nono, I apologize for assuming that you assumed! I am Malaysian, so close enough, I guess haha! Mmm, I've read your email and tried applying some stuff you mentioned there. I do have a problem that I should have brought up in the opening post. I've always had this problem and have no idea how to remedy it. Basically, when I wake up and start some light warming up of my voice, I can get straight into singing quite smoothly in all registers of my voice. However, when the day goes on for some time or I warm up more seriously or just start singing with more power (chest range increases), my lower mix is close to poop lol. It's extremely wobbly and just bad. I'll post a sound clip of what it sounds like [x] Help?
  8. Yes, my mixed voice is still very weak at lower volumes, as my singing muscles aren't trained enough yet. However I have recorded a second short run, this time with no volume restrictions. Although it is slightly improved...I can hear the hoarseness from shouting yesterday taking effect. Opinions? How else to improve. I know for a fact that my bridging really sucks. [x] I know. And yes, it is my passion! Phew, I'm very glad to hear that! Konichiwa! However, I am not Japanese hahaha! Just someone who appreciates Japanese music a lot. Thank you for the input so far!
  9. I'm planning on covering White X'mas by a Japanese pop band called KAT-TUN for this Christmas. The song means a lot to me but for some reason I've only thought about covering it up until recently. But seeing its significance, I really REALLY don't wanna butcher this song. I want to cover it as best as I could. I'll need advise from all of you awesome people to improve. Original Song : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6ZVvQmT0CY Here's my first short run of the song : [x] I had to be quiet on this one...as it's late and everyone's asleep. I decided that I needed to post this tonight though, as I fear I may become more busy with a relative in the hospital and all.. Anyway, trying to be quiet really impacted my high notes. They sound so shaky and terrible :x Would I do the song justice by covering it with my voice? That's my question with this short clip. When I record a newer version with no restrictions on volume, I'll need help on improving tone and all that. Eventually I'll record my piano playing and hopefully add in some violin too, to the final version. Thank you so much in advance. I would really appreciate any help! Just a beginner singer who recently learned about mixed voice and that I'm not doomed forever to my bad limited range.
  10. Most of you probably think this is a thread asking for critique on my song. But no, it's for critique on my singing of the song (technique, vocal quality), whether some parts of the song should be change to suit my voice and etc...even some lyrics? I'm Malaysian so my English isn't perfect. Any help with lyrical errors or incomprehension would be appreciated. With that aside, I present to you 'Anxiety'. Just some basic info : it's one part of a two part song. The other part is called Disorder. From that you can probably deduce that it is about anxiety disorder. Mainly speaking, my anxiety disorder. Anxiety will be a 'lighter' type of song, while Disorder, hopefully, will be a metalcore type of song with clean vocals to a minimum. The inception and first recording : [x] 18th of November. The day before, after not singing for several days, I tried singing just random songs...and found my power and freedom in singing was much much improved. So I tried singing my own song again and here it is [x] Have I improved? Which do you prefer?
  11. Mmmm, I suppose I should get used to my voice and just accept its awesomeness in its own ways, huh? I guess my judgment on my voice is heavily clouded and influenced by criticism by a lot of people who have made fun of it. I guess I just won't be able to be the frontman of my band with the quality voice. Better get to mastering guitar then ._. I listened to the clip and this is probably the first time I heard someone else whose chest voice and head voice sound so different. Well, more like when I hear your chest voice, I don't expect your head voice to be like that. Yay for finding relativity! Really, thanks for all the words and advises. Really appreciate it!
  12. Hmmm, I guess you're right about the preference thing. I myself dislike my 'sound'. Alright, I will try to achieve that 'ringing in head' thing that you mentioned! One last question : If I continue working with my voice, would I eventually be able to achieve a more masculine voice? Or would I just end up with a more powerful version of my current voice? It's a weird question, I know. Just that I've heard some people's singing voice go either deeper or lighter as they aged. Not sure if this is something natural or just a different technique adoption of said singers. Thanks for the great help you've given!
  13. @Michelle Aww, thank you for the compliments! I do write, haha! The second clip in my opening post, titled Anxiety, is written by me. I'm in a band so I'm actually writing a number of songs for us to perform! I just covered from a small part of a song I love again. I like my take on it, granted the differences in our voices, I think I did a good job. However, every time I think I do good is usually when I really need some critique...so thank you in advance for your help! Anything from whether I shouldn't sing this type of music to tone improval, key changing and all that jazz Coffeeshop Soundtrack cover Original: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMekefHmLVE
  14. Oh dear, no! I'm not that good at song writing yet haha! It's a song by Pierce the Veil. Here's the original much better performance : Yes, sometimes I feel very down because I can't write a good song or I sound really bad on some days..but in the end, I really love doing these two things so I forge on, living a better life. You too! Let's write beautiful songs :)
  15. Hey! Thanks for replying! Oh wow, from previous comments, people have said that the before clip is the worst one :/ I do like the way I sang the last few notes though. I have no idea how to sing the rest of the song like that. Haha, I dislike autotune as well...which is why I did not use any effects. I think you might think that I used it because on my base run through the song, there were notes that sounded really badly. So I silenced those notes and re-sung them. The mic position and the great difference between my head and chest voice (which is what I'm trying to get help with) must have made it sound like autotune. Sorry about that, should have mentioned it :/ Oh and there's a question about this clip I wanted to ask...I was actually pulling a lot chest voice so it was kinda hard to sing and transition between chest and head. I can go for a smoother transition if I switch to head earlier, but I'm afraid then you won't find the nice voice you like? Mmm, I only posted it cause people have said I sound similar to them But I disagreed so I tried to get comments here. I was focusing on adopting a low larynx while singing the first part of the song, which is why it might be quieter. If I don't go for a low larynx, it will be louder, but the note is harder to hit and it hurts...haha yes, so I know the dangers of that and yeah! This is actually a struggle I have and a question I've always meant to ask but always forget to. I don't think I can really feel resonance while singing. Some low chest notes, sure I can. But as I go higher, I can't seem to feel it. Well, there is a bit of sensation, but I cannot totally grasp it. Sometimes I put my hands around my nose just to feel it. I can feel ringing and resonance if I'm humming...but not singing. Does it have to do with my sinusitis?
