  1. I'm not sure what you're saying about tone, unless you're actually trying to make it sound like he does in the song, but he actually goes into falsetto. And you're fluctuating back and forth with your pronunciation. It sounds okay some places in the song, but other places, things end up coming out Country'ish, which is also okay if you were going for that, but if not, listen on. Like at :32 seconds. Try to tone done on the twang, because he does use it, but not in that way. And also say "brown suga". Leave the "r" off of the end. You didn't sound bad at all, but this is all for style purposes, because from what you said about tone, I get that you're trying to sound more like he does on the song.

Funny that you say I sounded country-ish.  I do have a "redneck" accent but I can usually hide it very well in my singing and I would like to shake it if I can but it's pretty hard.

And I see that he is going into falsetto but really don't care about copying him.
But I'm noticing that my high notes sound much less full and would like to fix that.  Maybe it's because I was straining a little.

  2. I liked your cover and you've got a nice voice :) but...

You need to work on your rythm/timing. It is very unstable and that's pretty much the only thing prevent this from sounding very good. Practice your guitar part with a metronome, then add your voice . If you can't keep a stable rythm you will sound unprofessional. Don't be afraid to simplify your comping: try to keep a steady reggae rythm first before adding the little emeblishments that you do. Rythm is probably the most important skill in music not playing fast and flashy, it's even more important than pitch.

Your guitar playing could also benefit from a greater use of dynamics: soft, med, loud...

I can keep a rhythm just fine, I was just goofin here.  Trying to focus entirely on my voice.

But thanks I'm glad that you guys think I have what it takes vocally.  I've always been totally overshadowed by my lead vocalist and never really had the confidence to sing much
