  1. thanxs for the advice Snax.

After that kind of singing my voice is fine, but my body is tired lol. I put so much support... I pay attention to not overblowing my cords with too much air. But i'm sure it could 10X better with less support and proper distortion technique.

Honestly, i never managed to get a real clean tone, since the beginning, it's so hard for me. I wish sometimes i could sing with such clear tones as you got... the thing is my voice feel shot if i try get clean and don't if just let my voice do the job, so really don't know what to think. And a thing that didn't help on clear tone is that 4 years ago i had an gastric (or duodenum don't really remember)ulcer. So i think that the ulcer took my clean tone forever... But i get your point ;-).

Thanxs again for your answer. And man you are so skilled love you voice!

  2. Hi there,

it's my first try at adding distortion to my singing. I thought try another style would be great. As i love alice in chains, i try to song one of my favorite song: Would?

It's just the choruses of the songs, it's just a try. I am very sorry fpr the lyrics, when i recorded it i didn't have internet access. I tried to mimic the words, in french we call that 'faire du yahourt'. So i apologize....

To resume, i didn't thought one second about technique or how to do it. I just let myself fit into the song and sing it the way i was feeling it, trying to capture the feel of the song. So be gentle lol , it's far from perfect and Layne Stanley (RIP) was such a voice...

Now that i've tried, i would like to work more on that kind of technique. Any thoughts about what i am doing right or wrong?

thanxs in advance you crazy distortion/screaming/creaking/raspy/rattle singers!!!!

    Josh in a box ;-)

  3. Thanxs for your replies ;)

The guitar part could have been better, i'm really concentrated on the vocal part, but i'm happy with it lol.

For the rapsy tone, in fact i've never thought about it, it seems that it's my natural tone in middle and high parts, since the begining i've always had that little raspy voice, it's hard for me to get a clean and relaxed tone. I think it's what i am, an eternal angry boy ;-).

For the support, thanxs a lot Quincy, i tried that today, i manage to keep the ribs opened but i'm always pushing too much. My abs tightened too much as i support. I realize that my support comes from my lower part of abs. Is it a wrong thing?

@Steven: thanxs a lot for the routine, i will sure try it, but i'm afraid that if i don't get a correct support i may blow out my voice. It seems that i can just sing mezzo forte (like in the video) or pianissimo. I bet messa di voice will help me no? or if you have any ideas...

Anyway, thanxs for all your comments, it's really helping me!

  4. Hi fellas,

Here's my first singing video on youtube. The song is World Affair by Richie Kotzen, i just love this song!

I need advice on support and attack (onset?). Each time i begin a sentence, i'm off key because i just can't seem to control my support and onset, i really love to have some advices ;-).

Another thing, this song is really hard for me to sing, it kills me lol, the main problem is that the notes are done half by the support and half by the throat and i wish i could my throat be more relaxed.

Anyway thanxs for listening and watching, feel free to say anything you want, if you like it say it and if you think is really bad say it too!!!

The first video is the original and the second is mine.

    Original version by richie kotzen:

  5. Hi,

we are on the same quest ;-). Good to see some people interrested in soul singing.

You definitly need more support on high notes and twang too. You seem to have a nice natural voice. My advice is to don't care id the volume is loud or not, all that matters is the results ;-).

Check out my topic here and feel free to participate:

http://www.punbb-hosting.com/forums/themodernvocalist/viewtopic.php?id=899 : in this one there is a lot of good informations that have been really helpfull to me.

Great to have a kind of soul tone quest friend here ;-).

  6. I think you've done an excellent job ;).

1- You seem to have a natural high voice, so don't sing it 1/2 step down.

2- Some notes are off pitch but i think it come from a little lack of support

3- Don't put too much gain on it, and when you're going to put more volume in your voice, just step backward from the mic and it will solve the problem.

4-Don't hear your voice whinny, not girly. As i said before your voice seems to be naturaly high and bright. And the preset you use make your voice more bright. That may be why you think it sound girly, but not ;-). Try to change your preset. I have toneport too, wich preset did you use?

For the rasp thing, it seems to me that you're not doing it the right way, it seems like the rasp/distortion fall back in your throat. I'm not an expert but when i had some rasp ( the rock rasp, not the soul rasp), i try to feel it more like it's above my tongue. When i feel it gettin down in the throat 100% sure i'm hurting my voice.

5- Keep on working, you did a really great version of the song here. For me, just put more support and try to "give more" to the song. Be a little bit more in it and you'll be perfect

    Conclusion:

Yoi're definitly not wasting your time.

  7. Hi there,

It's me trying wonderfull world by Sam Cooke à la Terence trent d'arby.

I try to get this bite Terence have and the dynamics too. But i think i really need help, i think i'm too chesty don't know how to get a lighter sound whithout loosing the bite/power

My biggest problem is really losing the weigth of the voice, maybe i'm supporting too much and not isolate twang the right way.

Hmmmm not sure if i twang on this one ( completly lost on this term).

Another thing, i think i've really have to work on the open throat, but really don't know how...

Please help me in my quest!

    Thanxs in advance

  8. hey seventhfear calm down, it's just a matter of links lol....

Now on your singing, you're singing quite well but to me seems like pushing too hard, especially on cowboys from hell. Seems like you were running out of breath.

You should try to do it your own way and not imitate Anselmo's vocal.

And above all, with skills you've got, you can't tell they're only so called singers here, so many here just sing better than you.

Too bad you're so quick to give some criticize on others singing and can't just wait a little to get comments for your singing. Maybe too much of a diva ego?...

  9. Why do you guy's try to sing like the original track?? do it your own way with your own style, I listend and it sounded like your singing in falceto but i'd personaly like to hear you sing in a full voice in your own style as it would make your screems sound awsome. I did my own version of Jean Geany by Bowie if you check it out it's on my profile then you will see what i mean.

I saw you other replies too and i got to say that you may be misunderstanding something here;).

I think 99% of the people posting in this part of the board just post some practice tracks, not an personal cover of the song. It's just songs to practice one goal ( twang or whatever)...

I'm happy for you if you found your own voice, it's a really great thing. But we all have heroes or challenge to do, and posting here trying to mimic a singer is a great thing to have some opinions of how we can do things better.

    Did you never do that?
