  1. AWESOME brother!!! I'm so happy for you, this band sounds like a blast to sing for. Vocals are great as always and sounds like you've fixed your issue. My only question is, is the chick singer dating the band leader? Her vocals are WAY up in the mix...typical  But, if she's your wife/girlfriend, then she sounds great!!!

Seriously, you nailed the Hansen/Gramm vibe for sure. I'm gonna check out more stuff on YT.

  2. Can I ask what your recording setup is?

Sure. It's basic as hell. I bought a macbook pro last month. I bought a Scarlett 2i2 interface which the monitor function doesn't work at all on but I used my old Beyerdynamic mic on for Cochise and Iris but it was muddy as hell and was a nightmare because of no monitoring ability. I bought a Sure Beta 58 in the process, but it was too tinny for me and wasn't usable because of the poor monitoring capabilities of the 2i2. I then exchanged the beta for a Blue Yeti usb and was having major problems with that too, but jacked around with Garageband enough to pull a decent sound. I recorded Caravan w/ Yeti and was somewhat satisfied. I know it's still a bit tinny/tunnely but (*auto edit*) it...it will have to do for now :D

  3. Now that was something!!! The thing I like about Van Morrison is all the energy he has in his singing. And that same energy came through with you. Your sound was as close to Van as anyone would want.

As a beginning I singer I still have to ask, Did you feel as if you were singing those high notes in "Head voce" or an extension of "Chest"? I still have to go into a whimpy Head voice to get those notes. And forget about any kind of distortion. It is just not there for me.

    But you really rocked it.

    MDEW,

man it's all blended at this point. I've been doing this for so long that it just blends together. But yes...there's a definite "release" above an E4 or so, but I'm not in what I would call a "hooty" head voice. It feels more compressed than anything I would have called "chest voice' before training....but more "released" for sure.

  4. Ha...guys you have no idea. I've been called "mini-Van" for many many years. When I was in my 20 's I just kind of gave up because I felt like Van had done everything I could ever want to do musically. I mean, what the hell could I offer? I persevered because, well, that's what we do. Van IS my one and only vocal God though  But...No Guru No Method No Teacher...I'm far too old for any of that shit at this point...just do it.

And yes....BIG props to Hobo Jim on backing tracks. Great karaoke version

  5. Wow. I was just about to post a recording of this as there seemed to be a thread going but having listened to yours I think it should be left at that.

Personally I wouldn't pick any faults with that recording -you have a great quality to your voice and were able to put your own voice to the song. Your Cochise cover was also exceptional and you could certainly hold your own on a professional basis.

    Well done sir.

Hell no man. Post it. I've been singing forever but that doesn't mean shit artistically. This is a place to learn and grow and maybe you do something cool with this song that I would have never thought of or maybe it inspires someone else or helps them out. Post it for sure!

    dude, you're cool!

    Thanks man.

Great singing, analog! Loved the notes at the end of the chorus, very original! :)

Hey, missed this earlier. Thanks a lot brother. I'm certainly a fan of your singing so this means a lot!

  6. Think your crotchety now? Give it a few years.

However, I try to take the edge of my crotchety with coffee and ibuprofen. And Ginko Smart. It's a ginko biloba formula designed to improve brain function and I need all the help I can get. :)

Yeah right. Your encyclopedic recall is terrifying. My wife is the same way. Her recall is literally unimaginable to me. I go through life as a half-"mentally challenged" compared to her.

  7. That was awesome. I like it when a singer puts his own stamp on a song.

These covers inspire me and makes me depressed all at the same time. You guys make it sound so easy and singable. Then I am inspired to try it again. Last time I sang it I ended up singing just the high notes over and over for about an hour. I did not like what I heard.

    MDEW,

that is a huge compliment. Thank you. I love your posts on this forum. I guess I'm part hillbilly, but you always seem to state things the way they need to be stated(at least for me.) Are you working with anyone right now?

  8. Second link is disabled. I probably would have said I liked the Chris Cornell version better, anyway. Always go with your instincts. Do it to please yourself, not me, or any other armchair expert.

Just so happens I liked your Cornell - ish take on this.

Well I had a problem with Box where it replaced the file and I had deleted a bunch of files on my computer and then cursing ensued and now I'm over it! Getting crotchety in my old age :P

I definitely enjoyed the "vibe" of the original take...felt more like me than a carbon copy so I dig it. Johnny has this great whisper-y thing going up high that I'll never have.. so I try to stick with what works for me :D I might like to tweak a line or two, but overall, gonna keep the bulk of the original take.

And thank you very much for your input! I completely agree about the instincts and that's why I like critiques because if I'm having doubts about a line here or there and someone else picks up on it, just helps to motivate me to get off my butt and fix the thing I thought should be fixed in the first place(if that made sense?)

But I'm definitely all about turning yourself on. And no that's not a reference to Manuela(as my Mexican brothers would say)...ha.

  9. Hey all....thanks so much for the replies. They are much appreciated!!!

Owen, I was trying to change it up a bit from the original, so I subbed some different vowels/melodies, but I get where you're coming from...it's different for sure/more like a live version.

I only had a couple minutes but here's a very rough take I did on the 1st/2nd chorus with vowels and phrasing closer to the original. Maybe that's more what you're thinking?

Let me know what y'all think.

    EDIT TO ADD

****Had technical problem and file got deleted and I'm losing patience trying to get it back, so it's gone for now***

I'll record another similar version...maybe...irritated right now

  10. Hey all,

I recorded this awhile back(based on the posts by Felipe and Owen) when I did Cochise. At the time, I thought I would re-do/tweak some stuff...but well....I've lost the motivation to be honest. So here it is. Also, this karaoke version is LONG, so you can skip from 2:00-3:25 where I vamp a little at the end(I still had Cochise stuck in my head :P )

  11. Wow! Your voice is like a good steak, dude. Juicey, smokey, rich, sizzling.

Dude...comparing my voice to steak has got to be the greatest compliment I've ever had :D

Stunnishing. Like a carbon copy of Cornell. That 15 second scream around the 3 minute mark is just beyond this world. Absolutely great.

Thank you so much Olem. You could crush this song if you wanted!

Great!! Great voice and great interpretation :cool:

    Thank you brother!

  12. David,

cool stuff man! I liked all of them, but would say Wildflower had the most impact on me. Very pretty arrangement and would be cool if you could post lyrics for your songs. I also checked out your youtube cover songs, and think you have a great song selection(I'm probably one of the few "folkies" on this forum  )along with a great lyric quality to your voice.

Have you covered any Steve Earl stuff before? I think it would be a great fit for your voice.

  13. Damn nice! :D Very cornell

Thanks man. And if you keep at this whole singing/music thing, somebody will be covering your stuff some day!

Awesome, Analog. I like it better than the original. You are less nasal than Chris. At least in my ears.

I also like this song because it is so very Led Zep, as for sound influence and rhythm.

Do some more stuff like this.

    Ron,

you are beyond too kind brother. This one was an easy "starter" song for me cause it's balls out rock, so the mix was pretty easy. I've got some other tunes that I've purchased from itunes(that haven't gone as smoothly,) but hopefully I'll get them worked out to my liking and post them. Thanks again!
