I would like to add a few points to what you can do to improve your situation: Keep hydrated whenever possible with (when possible) room temperature water. It sounds completely absurd, doesn’t it? Believe it or not, in some cases, it is completely true. At first, when the person gets diagnosed with any kind ofvoice problems, they become devastated, then frustrated; after that, depressed and then, believe it or not, they get used to it and, in some cases, they truly embrace it. They have no other choice, you may exclaim! Yes, partially you are right, my reader. They have to embrace it and get into balance to be able to deal with their voice issues accordingly and promptly. However, a lot of people, after conducting a short search, give up on getting better and soon give up on even claiming their life back. Moreover, they discover support groups where they get “support”, but not how to fix their voice problem, but how to learn to live with it; and yes, “love” it. So now, they are caught in a catch 22 situation, so to speak. They have found, so called support, from group members. They also seem to have found emotional support from their family members and friends. Everybody is feeling sorry for them and expressing their sympathy. And before they know it, they, very quickly, get use to it. Then, sometime down the road, they discover the real help, which could actually suggest and lead them, in majority of cases, to the full recovery of their normal, or even better voice then they originally owned. And then, believe it or not, instead of getting excited, they are getting scared. . ? Of what, you may ask? The answer is; they are afraid of taking action towards becoming better and conquering their voice issues. And why? Because once they are back to normal, they might lose the attention of those who originally were expressing their sympathy and feeling sorry for them. They got use to it and they do not want to lose it. Having a voice disorder, they feel, somewhat “special” and expect special treatment by the people surrounding them. I am just going to give you one example from my 40+ years of practice dealing with all sorts of people with and without vocal disorders, issues or problems.……………………………………………………………………………………………...About a couple of years ago, a young girl of 26 years of age, walked into my studio/clinic with a horrible voice disorder known as muscle tension dysphonia. She hardly could speak and told me in despair that she used to be a medical assistant for ophthalmologists. When she lost her voice due to her very erratic behavior, (smoking, drinking, drugs and loud late night parties), she was let go from her position, as she could no longer communicate with the clients. At that point, she was collecting employment insurance. Nevertheless, I offered a huge discount for my non-surgical voice repair program, consisting of psychological counseling, diet and nutrition counseling, my unique voice instruction coupled with certain body movements which help to lift the voice off of the injured area (the neck muscles and the vocal box); and lastly, natural herbal and homeopathic treatments to heal the throat flora by also removing all of the impurities (like acid and mucus) from the bottom of the throat. After I explained to her all of this, which took about 2 hours, she left with no charge from my side and with tears in her eyes and promise that she will be back as soon as possible to take me up on my generous offer. Sometime after, she called a couple of times, arranged appointments and payment schedules, and never showed up once. Eventually, after about a year and a half from our initial meeting, she called again and now said that she is definitely coming to pay me and pick up a set of herbs so she could start her instruction and treatment with me almost right away. She showed up a couple of times; each time late for at least an hour or longer. She did half of the instruction, as she always had to go somewhere; and also she was, according to her, feeling tired. Out of 10 hours she arranged with me, she took only a maximum of 6 hours in total, which she had stretched for over a year period of time and canceled her appointments with me, at least 10 times in the process. Then she disappeared for another year and, as usual, being apologetic and blaming herself, she almost “swore on the bible” that this time around, she would finish her remaining hours, as she wanted to go back to work. (All this time, she was collecting government assistance and gotten used to staying up late and getting up at 3:00PM). Nevertheless, by now, she was loving it all the way. However, (not being stupid, by far), she intellectually knew that it was all wrong and she should get better and get back to her normal life. She also kept confirming that I was her one and only vehicle to bring her to victory. By now, it is shooting close to 3 years from the beginning of this ordeal. She contacted me at the beginning of this year again and promised to restart the program with me no later then, now, past April/May. Ever since then, I have not heard from her for about 8 or 9 months. Go figure! She is in her late 20s by now and, as far as I am concerned, her young life is ruined. She fell in love with her present lifestyle on a physical and psychological level and constantly fighting with her intellectual understanding of the matter. However, it does not prosper her forward and frankly, I don’t think that it ever will. How sad is that? To conclude: Please don’t get used to your voice disabilities. Please don’t fall in love with it and with the newfound “lifestyle”. The longer you are in it, the harder it will be to snap out of it. And if you don’t, it will be a complete waste of your, once precious, life. I have numerous examples of that happening which I will reiterate to you in my future upcoming blogs.

Set your Destination! “Drive” to it.Arrive and save your route in memory for future reference! What do you mean by “Vocal GPS”, you, my reader, may ask? What I mean is that, first and foremost, you have to establish a frame of reference of how to make your voice work upon design and inner-command. Recently, I received a singing client who happened to be very talented and even possesses absolute pitch, (perfect pitch).Being a musician since an early age, playing a few different instruments, it was an absolute pleasure to start a Private Master Vocal Coaching Sessionwith him. However and evidently, his singing and, for that mater, speaking voice, does require a lot of work.Being in his late 30’s, he adapted a lot of bad habits on his own and with “help” of his previous teachers. I told him that if I had compared his singing to a puzzle, then his puzzle would consist of a head of a cat, body of a snake and the tale of a dog (of course, figuratively speaking). It was very difficult to make heads or tales of his singing (no pun intended). In other words, what he heard in his head and with his ears was completely incongruent with the sound he was producing. Even in spite of having perfect pitch, he hit quite a few flat and sharp notes and his timing was definitely quite speedy. In other words, the whole voice thing was out of balance, so to speak. So starting the first session, I had to show him how to set his “vocal GPS”, i.e., how to program it and how to properly map it using my wall-based diagrams, which portray the exact message about the physical sound and its movement and direction based on the law of physics and geometry. Once the student understands it intellectually, the physical application of the sound is next. Now that the “vocal GPS” is on, I begin to play the role of a “driving instructor” and navigate my student, not only via “GPS”, but also verbally explaining to him, “along the road”, how not to “fall out of the road” and achieve an aimed delivery of his sound. Finally, after a number of hours spent, we collectively and separately arrive to the destination preset by the “Vocal GPS”.You would think that our journey is over which actually, granted, physically, it is. But, little that you know that, if the “destination” is not set in memory, the “driver” will not be able to embark on the same road again without reprogramming the destination back to the GPS. Sometimes, since the “driver” is new, he might have difficulties to recall the route back on his own, and again might need professional help to get back on the “driving seat”. I hope you, my reader, is getting my drift and fully understanding my figurative and allegoric manner of speaking. In other words, It takes approximately 30 hours of instruction to “seal the deal”.That also, and furthermore, applies to the non-surgical voice repair cases when the 30 hours of instruction and natural herbal and homeopathic treatment is a must.Let’s break it down…The first 10 hours, it allows us to set the vocal GPS.The Next 10 hours will take the “actual driving” to the set destination. And finally, the last 10 hours, (which is now 30 hours in total), will take to confirm the destination and lock it in the human psyche, brain and every conceivable muscle of the body and the vocal box appropriate muscles, in particular. So to conclude, the 30 hours is the protocol for success - singing, speaking or non-surgically repairing the voice.

More and more, we are hearing about well-known artists losing their voices, cancelling their shows and tours and undergoing vocal surgeries. Nevertheless, the amateur singers lose their voices in an everyday basis as well, we just don’t hear about it as much. And lastly speakers: They are caught completely by surprise when their speaking voice seizes on them “out of the blue” or, at least, they think so. In reality, the voice loss is always premeditated. The worse it is for speakers, as they’re completely not expecting anything like that and the lost voice is getting them, the least to say, in shock. The fact is that they do not realize that the voice is a vulnerable organ and could break very easily. Singers are, by far, more aware about it and those who proceed with caution, so to speak, are able to keep their voice healthy and lengthy for the rest of their lives. So what about those who don’t know about voice preservation? We have the answer for them. The Vocal Science technique, which we advocate, suggests you to use the different set of muscles (which are your facial muscles), instead of the vocal box muscles. The facial muscles contain the sinus (vocal) cavities within. That is where the voice (as a muscle) with the support of the abdominal muscles will get in and get secured within those cavities. Then with the proper breathing control, (also supported by the abdominal muscles), the sound gets projected to its aimed destination. So, at that point, the mission is accomplished, as the wholesome mechanism, which allows the voice to work in its fullest capacity possible and with no pain or strain on the vocal anatomy, has been instilled in the human muscles and psyche.

If you can, you will be able to use your voice, by design, and think on a parallel track and in synchronicity with your speaking or singing. Nevertheless, this is an invaluable skill to have. The fact is that the majority of people do not possess that skill, as they are simply out-of-balance and out of alignment. Some of them think long and hard before producing the speaking or singing sounds and thus, evidently, “missing the boat”. The others, opposite; they speak and sing without boarders and think, if at all, after the fact. It is especially crucial for those who have been undergoing a non-surgical voice repair ordeal. In fact, the above-described imbalance was also a contributing factor to their voice disorder in the first place. The human being who is, in fact, in balance, is most likely able to think and act on a parallel track, which means that his/her subconscious mind and conscious mind are aligned and thus, work on a parallel track with each other. The subconscious mind is responsible for the thinking and the conscious mind plays the role of the driving force. If they are in agreement with each other, the voice should come out as the outcome of the above equation. If the synchronicity between the subconscious and conscious mind is disrupted, the person will not be able to produce any sound upon design and will get stagnated with their thinking and no action, or with the action, which is not supported by any structural thinking. In this case, the singer most likely will be going out of tune and out of timing and, no doubts, sooner or later, will end up with some kind of voice disorder. The regular speaking person, who is very loud in an everyday basis, screaming and shouting at all given times and without boarders, also will end up with some kind of voice damage down the road. As these people have no understanding of any kind that their voice is also one of their organs and if abused, it will lose its functionality, just like a liver will give up its functions for the alcoholics. To conclude – The balance is everything, and so is the knowledge. Stop yelling and screaming before, during and after the voice repair work. Speak in moderation and be always on guard that the voice is a fragile human organ and could snap and become damaged at any given time. For singers - don’t push your voice to the extreme high or low notes without knowledge how to approach and access it. Please learn how to hear yourself thinking and act accordingly and timely.

I have just recently returned from my quick and somewhat short, but very impactful, trip from London.Within only a little bit more than a week’s period of time, I was able to provide my four UK clients with my voice repair services; speaking & singing. All of them were unique in their own way and, nevertheless, all of them were different. However, one thing they had in common is that they were extremely smart and sharp, took directions really well and complied with the procedures, introduced to them, to a tee. This whole process, for me, was extremely heart rejuvenating, as here in Canada & in North America in general, for some reason, people who come to obtain my services are, by far, not as alert, are taking directions much slower and mainly, after the fact, not compliant with the aftermath protocol. For example: speech repair clients, for some reason, seem to be unable to understand that after they complete their voice repair course and treatment, they cannot begin to “speak without boarders”. The minute they acquire their speaking voice back, not even a ‘Russian Tank’ would be able to stop them. Understandably, they were deprived of the regular communication due to their voice issues. However, they have to understand that they have just left a “vocal rehab” in a manner of speaking, and thus cannot begin right away “binging” on their colloquial speaking. However, that, unfortunately, happened to one of my serious voice repair clients in the UK as well, who luckily, is in complete understanding of what had happened, and she also understands that, for the serious vocal anatomy problem like she has had, she would need a lot more hours of instruction, coupled with the enhanced natural treatment. That said, I will be heading out back to the UK to help her (and others) further in a few weeks. Then there was a voice repair client who used to be a singer in his country, and won numerous of competitions in his early 20s. Not being aware of any vocal technique and just possessing a natural talent, he practiced, practiced and practiced… One day, right before appearing on National Television, his voice “snapped” and he was no longer able to reach the high notes which he was famous for. He had already lined up some producers who were interested in prospering his professional career. In just seconds, his dream was shattered for the next 20 years forward. Of course, with time, he buried his frustration and disappointment, but the dream to become a well-known professional singer is still alive within him. Nevertheless, he went to numerous doctors who conducted numerous of scopes, but no one seemed to be able to help him. While with me in a session, he offered me a recent picture of his internal vocal anatomy. I was shocked, as his whole pharyngeal area was blown out of proportion on both sides! The doctor, however, commented that his vocal cords are good and his pharyngeal area is “slightly bowed”…? So in spite of the obvious health and vocal problems, the ENT specialist recommended the vocal coaching, which supposedly would help my client to restore his singing voice!!! Go figure!!! My doomed student, first and foremost, needs to work on his health and his vocal anatomy health. Those bowed, out of proportion pharyngeal glands, possessing tons of toxins within them. It is just like a ticking time bomb, which could explode at any given time and could also easily cause substantial bodily harm. As per usual, I had administered the natural herbal treatment, which plays an essential part in one’s healing. The “proof was in the pudding”. Those herbs, (which also have medicinal power) almost in an instant, set off a body reaction. My student first started to cough and then, shortly after, acquired flue like symptoms. To my dismay, he clued in momentarily to what’s going on and started exclaiming that he finally felt a movement in his throat and in his chest which he was wishing to feel for the last 20-somewhat years. To his very big credit, he understood that in order to conquer his physical and vocal problem, something like this has to happen, and he embraced it with gratitude. Way to go Man! Then I had a voice repair client who flew to me from Scotland. That was quite a sad story, as this beautiful human being acquired what is called Spasmodic Dysphonia. This very nice woman is a teacher in a public school. Nevertheless, her vocal/neurological condition prevented her from working for some time. However, obtaining five official hours (and all together six, and a bit, unofficial hours), she was able to improve conducting her voice in a more proper fashion which, in turn, had helped her to experience reduced amount of spasms. Obviously, either five or six hours could not be enough to conquer such a complicated voice disorder. Hopefully in the future, this wonderful human being will be able to pair up with me again for some much more in-depth instruction and natural treatment. And lastly, about eight month ago, when I was last in London attending to a very beautiful and promising opera singer (former voice repair client), I also momentarily had attended to another in her mid-30s woman, who at the time, due to misuse of her speaking and singing voice, had a weak, scratchy, airy and somewhat hoarse voice. She only took 2 hours of instruction in 2014. When she came to my hotel room this time, and only for an hour and fifteen minutes, I could not recognize her voice, as she sounded completely normal, clear and amplified. I have asked her if she had attended any speech lessons, or anything like this related to the voice issue, her response was that she attempted to embark on a couple of singing lessons. However, she said that she was unable to locate her teacher any further. So, if that is not a miracle, then what is? I was almost shocked to hear her speaking and as well as by her new looks (loss of weight, and overall rejuvenation)! Way to go Girl! Her determination to restore her voice and to work on her physical appearance is, indeed, the best example for any human being. That’s all for now. Let’s see what my next up-coming trip to the UK will have in store for me. I will definitely make sure to share it with my readers.

What do you mean by the above, you may ask? What I mean is that the person in question, immediately after recovering their speech (or their singing voice for that matter), goes on the binge marathon. It's like a person who has been on a diet for sometime, after loosing the desirable weight, goes right back to their bad eating habits and binges on everything they were deprived of. No doubts that their lost weight will come back really fast and often double their original weight. Sad? Indeed! But that’s haw the human body works. Similarly, it happens with voice repair clients. They acquire virtually a "verbal diarrhea" And in spite of all my warnings and pleadings, they cannot stop talking until they again become raspy and hoarse! Now they are, so to speak, in their "comfort zone" but upset and frustrated that they have lost their ability to communicate with no pain or strain on their vocal anatomy, like they did during the instruction. Whose fault is that? Obviously their own. They obviously have not followed the recovery protocol, which was thoroughly and strongly advised to them. Who could they blame now? Obviously themselves. However, all of us are human and it is understandable that when we become deprived of something, we want to regain it back real fast and that's where the problem begins. We do not have patience, at least the majority of us. And those who do, we applaud! Nobody would imagine the athlete with an injured leg, (with only a few treatments behind his belt) suddenly start running a marathon! To regain the normal function of any organ, especially the limbs, spine and yes, voice, requires time and a strict regimen. In the case of the voice repair, the person requires to speak much less then before (at least for some time). They have to continuously consume the natural herbs and remedies that were suggested to them. The absolute minimum amount of hours to start the rehab to concur the voice issue would be 30 consecutive hours of unique instruction and natural treatment. For some people that is enough, and they can carry on from there on their own. For others, it requires 2 or even 3 times of repetition of the same and then maintenance - In other words, “tightening the screws” should prevail. It also depends on the severity of the vocal disorder However, the strong and determined people require less repletion and less maintenance. The more healthy and fit people usually have much less struggle with the instruction, treatment and aftermath. Those (with psychological problems and poor diet) require more attention on both parts – instruction and treatment. And, as a rule, they have many more problems during and after the process. Very often, the voice repair clients suffer from many physical and emotional problems, which also contribute to their voice loss and their voice dysfunction. So the voice problem could be a very complicated and deep matter, as the voice loss might be just a symptom of something much more serious going on with the person. Therefore, the voice issue cannot be taken lightly and should be addressed immediately, as it could be an indication of something serious yet to come, for example, a stroke or heart attack. I want my readers to understand the seriousness of any voice disorder and address it, if not medically, then alternatively, as soon as possible.

I have more and more inquiries from people who used to sing for the longest time in the past; and suddenly, (or at least so they thought), lost their singing range and some of them even lost their singing voice altogether. Now they are older and in their 40s (and counting), and they still cannot get a grip with the notion that their love and joy of singing might never be present again. 20 or 30 years later after the occurrence, they are still upset and even depressed about it. Of course, they have been through numerous doctors and speech therapists appointments; but in the majority of cases, it did not add up to any expected results. Needless to say, since they had lost their love and joy being able to sing, their lives were never the same. Their passion and desire for expressing themselves, (telling their stories through singing), had been deeply buried. What would it take to recover one’s singing voice? Is it even possible? If it were possible, how would it impact the long-term sufferer’s life?I, fortunately, could give the answers to all of the above: To answer the first question, luckily, in majority of cases, it is absolutely possible How does it happen that the singing voice, “all of a sudden, disappears”, (so to speak), you may ask? Some people are born with natural singing talent and once they discover it, they obviously begin to use it, and rightfully so. However, enjoying their newly found voice, they use it excessively and thus, not being aware of the proper voice application and vocal technique, they end up abusing it to the “point of no return”, at least in the conventional sense. For some reason, neither them nor their mentors realize that the singers’ vocal cords are not made from steel. In fact, they are very fragile and have to be treated with special care. Like any instrument, it requires a frequent tune-up and, of course, proper maintenance. Usually, the young and talented artists who get discovered via their talents and looks have no idea how to power their voice without any pain or strain on their vocal anatomy. So they pull and push their voices full force. And one day, sooner or later, the voice “pops”, as one of my voice repair clients described it. The musicians often use the expression, “No gig lasts forever”. Indeed! Nobody should take his or her voice, (or other anatomy for that mater), for granted. If you are entering any high tasking field, (singing performance included), please research, (and act accordingly), how not to kill your voice, but rather the opposite; how to preserve and nurture your internal, fragile instrument – Your Voice! As to recover it and restore it to its original state would take a great effort on the part of the singer and a very experienced voice specialist. To answer the second question, the voice recovery and restoration is a huge deal and when it is complete, some people begin to rethink the purpose of their lives. It is a little difficult to turn the clock back and now leave their present lives and come back to something what was very precious in the past. As we all know, there is no change without change, even if it is positive. However, in any case, the benefits of a newly found voice are countless: The confidence, the self-esteem and self-worth, the dignity and integrity, the pride of accomplishment... and just simply recovered joy and passion. What price tag could you put on that?!

Attention all Speakers and Singers! If you have noticed that your speaking or singing voice is not performing as per usual and rather sounds lower and somewhat hoarse, PLEASE STOP!!! If you continue speaking in your usual manor and disregard the fact that your voice is feeling scratchy and your throat is feeling itchy, you might lose your voice completely and for some time ahead. Singers: please do not continue singing if you have noticed that it is much harder now to reach your high notes, which normally would not be a problem and if you have to push and pull your voice out of your inflamed, sore throat. At that time, you may also notice that your voice has deepened and has begun to sound scratchy and hoarse. If you don’t stop in time and look into your voice and vocal anatomy problem, that could be very much the end of your singing career. Coaching and repairing voices for over 40 years, I had a lot of cases where the performer did not stop on time to address the vocal problem he had and, as a result, got his vocal cord paralyzed, or just damaged beyond repair. One case comes to mind where I received a client from Atlanta Georgia who happened to be a Pastor, who was appointed to travel the world to preach and sing prayers. He got laryngitis, (my guess would be that it came from the wrong way of singing and some stress associated with it). So instead of stopping and looking into the problem, either medically or alternatively, he continued his engagements until he could not do it at all. And then there was the moment of truth. As a result of not taking proper care of the laryngitis and not using the right vocal technique (speaking and singing), his right vocal cord got paralyzed. Vocal paralysis is very hard to reverse and not always possible. However, I have had a very good success with it, especially if only one vocal cord was affected. Although, the complete cure of the vocal paralysis may not occur, using the actual Vocal Science™ technique, coupled with the (designed by me), special speech and singing exercises, will make the person much more articulate and clear, so the individual’s speaking voice will begin sounding almost as per normal. With respect of the singing voice, it’s not that easy and with the damage like this, it is definitely not always possible to restore it. As much as I could try to go around the effected vocal cord (via my method), if it doesn’t start moving at least remotely, the effort could easily become obsolete.

Artists: Save your voice.Producers: Have an easier role with the well-trained artist who will not lose their voice during the production.Managers: Save time, money and aggravation by your artists not cancelling their performances, tours and other appearances.Let’s look at the recent related events: Singer, Mariah Carey, who has recently been on tour in Japan, was embarrassing herself while literally losing her voice on stage singing off key and not reaching any of the high notes. Obviously, she needs some sort of voice repair before it will become irreparable. Also, people who loved and cherished her before are now deeply disappointed and even some of them are quite annoyed, as she definitely has not lived up to their expectations. So this is the question. Why, neither her or more so, her manager, do nothing about it? Are they waiting for the time where a vocal operation will be inevitable? Why bring it to that drastic point? Who knows? I do not have an answer. Let’s look at the situation of Chad Kroeger of Nickelback. He was recently diagnosed with an operable cyst on his vocal box. I, personally being a voice specialist, knew for quite some time that there is something wrong with his voice, let alone his singing overall, which is definitely not up-to-par, (at least from where I sit). I knew that sooner rather than later, that he will not be able to push his voice around much longer. As all musicians know, “no gig lasts forever”. Obviously, the refund for the purchased concert tickets has been already offered. My question is still the same…WHY have him and his manager had to bring it to this extent? Obviously, in this instance, everybody took a loss: The singer, the manager (management), concert promoters and the audience. However, from the point of view of the audience, rather then to listen to the not-very-adequate singing, (to put it mildly), the audience should look forward to the new and recovered voice of Chad Kroeger, and hopefully attend some of his concerts in the not-very-distant future. And lastly, Roger Daltrey: The lead singer of The Who. He was ordered a vocal rest for his vocal cords, and thus rescheduled his Toronto tour and pushed it to December (to the great disappointment of my son-in-law, who happened to be a huge fan of the artist and the band). The only problem I have with the doctors order to go on a vocal rest, in my opinion, will only help momentarily, but will never solve the actual vocal problem caused by wear and tear of the vocal cords and by not-quite-proper application of the voice which, in turn, drowned that voice in a much lower position which naturally prompts the artists to pull and push their voice out on the surface, while concurrently promoting the strain of the vocal cords. So the problem has to be rectified by going to the source, addressing the cause and then by taking the appropriate measures to recover and heal that voice so it could last for, lets say, the next 50 years. So the moral of it all is: Artists: when you notice the change in your voice in the quality and range, don’t continue singing and performing, pretending that nothing has changed. It will only bring you to a deeper vocal trouble, which will be that much harder to repair and restore back to normal. Producers: When you notice that your artist is not performing as per standards, please stop the role and address it to the artist. Please make him aware that he has to look into his voice and make sure that it is healthy enough to continue the recording production.Managers: If you want to have your artist perform and tour and not cancel his engagements, please start managing the artist’s very instrument (the voice), and if you spot a problem, please address it right away, as in the long run, the artist and you will lose more in the future then you would gain momentarily.

For every singer, the question should be; do I possess the distinct tone and the uniqueness of the sound overall? It is easier said than done. Majority of people could carry a tune, but not too many could sing, I mean, really sing. First of all, the person who likes to call him/herself a singer should possess a proper vocal technique, which will allow the singer a freedom to vocalize to their hearts content. They should be able to do it with absolute ease and pleasure, and not to have hardship while trying to deliver their message to their audience. If they don’t know how to work smart, so to speak, and not hard, they also could ruin their voice in the process. And if that happens, their artistic tendencies would not count for anything. Just like in figure skating, the artistic merit is very important, as well as looks, costumes and presence on the ice. But if the skater lands 3 out of 4 jump combinations flat on the ice, the former will not count, and vice versa. So obviously, both technical and artistic merits should be very strong. Similarly in singing, the person might have a strong and powerful voice. That person could even have some knowledge of vocal technique, but his tone is not pleasant, and his passion is not there, so he sounds, quite often, very harsh, loud and robotic. There is nothing unique about that singer and he does not possess any identification of his persona. So his ‘biometric data’ is pretty shut down and obviously not thriving. If that singer performs at the bar, he will find that within the first few minutes, he has “lost” his audience. People are not listening, talking loud, eating and drinking and not paying attention to what’s happening on stage. On the contrary, when there is an artist singing in a bar or in a concert hall, projecting the right power and dynamics, knowledge, intelligence and proper vocal technique, the audience are captured by the singer and stop talking and stop eating….and stop drinking. Interestingly enough, many years ago, I was invited to do a presentation/workshop about the Vocal Science ™ technique in one of downtown Toronto’s venues. The pretty respectable bar was holding some kind of a music related event and I was invited to tell and show to the up and coming artists what the Vocal Science method is all about and how to apply it to the actual singing. The first 15-20 minutes, I thought, were very successful, as the audience was silent and completely taken by me. Then somebody tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to finish my presentation in a short order. I was extremely surprised, as the audience obviously loved it and wanted more. But then, I realized that I was producing an ‘opposite effect’ for the venue: I “took away” their customers, as almost everybody stopped talking, stopped eating, and mainly… stopped drinking. LOL.Obviously, I realized later, and after the fact, that the whole Idea for that bar was to invite as many drinking musicians as the capacity would allow. Go figure! In any other occasion, it would be considered as a desirable outcome, and so it should be! So if your biometrics are intact, your vocal technique is impeccable and your passion and desire is present, you will be remembered as, in this instance, your tone will be unique and your sound will be distinct. Achieving all of the above, consider your entire being (voice included, nevertheless) fully optimized!

Lately, we are hearing more and more about people’s vocal tragediesSome of them have been suffering for years with the loss of their regular voice, speaking and/or singing. Majority of them went to all kinds of doctors and specialists and have been diagnosed with all kinds of health problems related or, most of the times, not related to their vocal performance. The loss of their original speaking and/or singing voice had been blamed on all kinds of the person’s internal health. Yes, granted some of the internal health problems may be related to the quality of the voice. For example: If the person practicing an unhealthy diet i.e. consumes a lot of dairy products, that person most likely will possess a lot of mucus everywhere in the body, vocal anatomy included. If the person eats a lot of acidic products like tomatoes, oranges, red meats and others, no doubts this person will suffer from acid reflux. That said, if they do have a problem with their range and projection of their voice, naturally, their voice is drawn to the lower position, thus it is prone to meet the gastric acid which, in turn, will begin to burn the vocal cords. That said, the inner health and outer fitness would definitely help with whichever vocal problems and/or issues the person may experience. The cleaner and more fit the physical body is, the stronger and more vibrant the persons’ mind will be also. The Vocal Science ™ method requires the lift of the voice to the set of the facial muscles/cavities to release the pressure of the sound from the vocal box and vocal cords, per say. If you visualize a ballerina trying to jump taking off of a thick carpet, you can imagine that not only she, most likely, will injure her ankle or knee, but also would never acquire a needed height to accomplish the pas de deux. That said, if the vocal cords are covered with mucus and the bottom of the throat is full of gastric acid, to lift the sound off of “that ground” could become quite difficult. For that, I am using natural herbs and remedies to clean up the surface of the vocal box to be able to achieve the lift of the voice with the support by the abdominal muscles. So the flora of the throat becomes clean and begins its healing. The doctors usually “bombard” their clients with a whole bunch of scary sounding definitions and diagnosis. The clients usually tell me that they have no idea how to read, let alone understand their medical transcriptions/reports. It is usually extremely over-exaggerated and, for the longest time, I could not understand why. One of my new clients reports suggesting that he has had preoperative and postoperative care. In reality, the person never had undergone any vocal surgery whatsoever. In the not so very distant past, I had a person who worked as a medical assistant and she advised me that every move the doctor makes has a special code. For example: If the doctor checks your blood pressure, he charges the insurance, (here in Canada), $200.00. I am, sure the ENT specialists are charging for all of their checkups, scopes, and etc.. So my assumption is that the more the doctor writes, the more he is able to charge either the insurance or the person individually. This is just my general subjective opinion. Take it for what it is. Sometimes, in fact, “they are right on the money” and they produce the right diagnosis, but they still do not offer, or even suggest, any meaningful help to the sufferer. In majority of cases, the problem is mechanical, but very often coupled with the physical and emotional state of the individual. So my duty is to dissect the problem into pieces and work on each piece individually and collectively. That’s what I call forensic analysis and expertise, and yes, it is very applicable to any voice issues.

Indeed, should you give up, or rather do something, which will (at least) improve the quality of your life? What are those untreatable, nasty voice disorders? It definitely is vocal paralysis (paresis) or both vocal cords, the severe forms of spasmodic dysphonia, the severe forms of muscle tension dysphonia, scar tissue on the vocal cords, damaged vocal box and it’s anatomy due to/or during the surgical procedure and many more others . Once, not too long ago, in my office/studio walked in a middle-aged, pretty handsome Asian man with his wife. It was very sad to try to speak with the man, as there was nothing else coming out of his mouth but mooing. I could not understand one word he was trying to say. Then his wife took over the “conversation”. She told us a story that her husband had a cancer of thyroid. Then the doctors first were trying to get rid of the cancer, they conducted a surgical procedure, which had paralyzed one of his vocal cords (vocal paresis). Then he was suggested to undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatments, which, naturally, worsened his voice condition. He became even more raspy and hoarse and then became hardly understood. Then doctors decided to proceed with the second operation to remove the remaining cancer from his thyroid. After he came out of the second surgery, his second vocal cord was also completely paralyzed. How horrible it might be for the man in his mid-40’s to have communication difficulties, to the point that he could not form any sensible words! He came with the hope that I will offer him a magic pill and a magic cure…? On one hand, of course, you cannot blame him that he was looking for a miracle. On the other hand, how realistic is that? I have explained to him that his condition cannot be cured, either by me or anybody else for that matter. But what I could have done for him is improve the quality of his speaking; to improve clarity, annunciation and pronunciation, if not for all words, but for the majority of the words. How would I do this, you may ask? With the great difficulty, a lot of patience, huge intensity on both of our parts, employing the tedious Vocal Science ™ method and all of my 40 years experience, dealing with the health related (and other kinds) of voice/vocal disorders. I would teach him how to speak, employing facial muscles, the use of which would make his voice at least 4 times more resonant and amplified. Also, employing along with facial muscles, the abdominal muscles, would allow him to have a greater support of the sound, the proper lift of the sound off of the vocal box and thus he would become more understood, which means his confidence would be improved by far and the quality of life would be more enhanced and escalated. Unfortunately, my prospective client could not understand how he could use the different muscles (facial muscles working in full conjunction and coordination with the abdominal muscles) and not the vocal cords. Too bad for him because, as far as I am concerned, this tedious and intense, syllable-on-syllable, word-on-word Vocal Science™ technique is the only hope he had. Evidently, not all vocal severe damages are curable, but almost all of them are treatable to some degree. It requires the understanding, willingness and 'lovingness', an open heart & soul and true belief in the improvement of one’s condition. Without the above, there is no point for any of the parties involved, to embark on such, not very easy at all, endeavor. Firstly, the answer for the question whether or not you can prevent a vocal surgery, in majority of cases would definitely be yes. We have seen and heard a lot of artists with great talents and beautiful songs, but the majority of those artists, unfortunately, did not have much of an idea about proper vocal technique, which actually would prevent those beautiful natural voices from, in some cases, severe damage. They’re usually picked up by the industry based on their talents, looks, and in some cases, well-written songs. Also, I will never forget, “until the day I die”, when I had an appointment with Sony Music Canada, and before starting the conversation about my own artist, the two Sony executives, almost, right away, when I sat down on the chair in their office, exclaimed: “Where have you been when we needed you last night? We flew over an artist from Vancouver and could hardly pull out any vocals out of him! It was more like we were pulling out our own hair!” I still, being somewhat naive (at the time), exclaimed: “If he couldn’t sing, so to speak, to save his life, why in the world you flew him over?” “Yes Diana”, they said. “We understand your point, but he is such a good song writer!” My question was, and still is, if the person is a good songwriter, does it automatically make him a good singer? If, for example, I am a good driver, does it automatically make me a car mechanic or a driving instructor? For some reason, it is presumed that if the artist is a good songwriter, good looking and got his/her charismatic performance down pat, it grants him a “license” to be a “professional” singer. In my books, it’s called a “license to kill” and in this instance and reference, to kill their own voice no doubts! VERY WRONG IDEA! To be able to withhold the pressure on the human voice and vocal anatomy, you really need to know what you are doing with respect of the mechanics of the voice. One more time again, if I am not a car mechanic, I will, for example, not mess with the car engine, carburetor or alternator for that matter. I will hire an authorized, licensed car mechanic. For some reason, neither the singers nor the music industry professionals ever think in this capacity or terms. They overload their artists with huge tasks concerning their voices and then they get surprised that the artists’ voices seize and most likely, the singers (under their, so called, care) will be facing the vocal surgery. To answer the second question whether or not the artist could avoid the vocal surgery is not always straightforward and not very easy. If the voice is damaged severely, the non-surgical approach, at that time, may not already be feasible. Since the artists are under the contract and have to record, perform and tour, when they feel that something unusual is happening with their voice, they have no choice as to continue pushing and pulling their vocal anatomy to the max until they severely strain their voices and could not anymore pull anything out of it. At that time, usually in the doctor’s office, they discover that they have bleeding vocal cords, nodules or polyps on their vocal anatomy and/or amuscle tension dysphonia coupled with the acid reflux and fibromyalgia associated with their voice disorders diagnosis. Majority of the above listed vocal issues are possibly solvable via a special technique, which addresses the lift of the voice off of the vocal anatomy and then the concurrent natural treatment to aid the wounded throat and larynx flora. So if the artist is practicing a safe and sound vocal technique which allows him/her to save and protect the vocal anatomy and assure the duration of his/hers vocal health, the vocal surgery will never be necessary. Calling all artists! If you can AVOID a vocal surgery, please do. I am sure everybody remembers the case of Joan Rivers. She went to the outpatient auto laryngology department in one of the prominent New York’s hospitals, to remove a simple polyp… We all know that she never got out of the operating table. Safe voice revolution? Yes, it is. If you don’t practice “safe voice” your life might be at stake!

More and more people are inquiring about the difficulty of using their voice, as per normal. There are different factors taking place to prevent people from communicating efficiently and with no difficulty, using their speaking voice. When the voice, sometimes due to a lot of very loud and excessive talking, drops down to its very low position, it begins to sound hoarse and raspy and very low in volume. The person who experiences the above described symptoms is trying to push and pull that voice to the surface and, of course, the more they try, the less results they get. Sometime ago, my voice repair client from Boston who used to play in the Blue Grass band, (before her vocal injury) told me: “Diana, I pushed and pushed my voice, trying to bring it to a normal volume and get rid of the hoarseness, and last August, I knew that I have pushed it for the last time”. By pushing and pulling her voice, not only did she lose her volume almost completely, she also acquired a nodule on one of her vocal cords. Now we have had a double whammy. We had to recover the voice from the “deep swamp” and we had to dissolve the nodule by releasing the vocal box from the pressure of the sound and nurturing her vocal anatomy with natural herbs and remedies. When she finally arrived to my studio, her both (speaking and singing voice), were almost completely shattered. By working on her speech, I was able to recover her voice from “the deep end”, so to speak, and once her speaking voice started to sound normal, as a side effect, I had finally taught her how tosing professionally and with no pain or strain on her vocal anatomy. I have to say that it is still easier to work with the vocally injured singers than with the regular people with just speech problems. Every singer intuitively knows and feels that their voice is a very sensitive commodity and could seize on them at any given time; where’s regular people with acquired speech problems are, quite often, taken by surprise. They are talking a lot, they are talking loud, they are screaming at their children’s’ baseball games, the talk on the phone all day, either at work and/or with friends at home, and then “suddenly”, their voice however, gradually, begins to go. Since it has never happened to them before, they do not agree with it, as their whole being is protesting and still desires to be loud and flamboyant. So they force and force their voices out and the more they force, the worse it gets. Now, finally, they were forced to stop, and that’s where their trauma begun. So, psychologically speaking, it is much harder to deal with these people rather than with the amateur or professional singers. Not only speech troubled people, physically, have trouble to communicate, but emotionally, usually, they are also very distraught and quite disturbed. Restoring the voice, in general, could be quite a long, intense and tedious procedure. Therefore, at my work, all of my degrees of education, my extensive experience in teaching and fixing voices, are utilized to the max. First of all, I have to be a total communicator, as well as psychologist and sometimes even a psychiatrist, as without those skills, I cannot even begin the voice repair of any kind.

The world had just herd about the well-known artist, Sam Smith who, unfortunately, had to interrupt his Australian tour and reschedule his Japan and UK tours. It is very unfortunate when the singer, especially at his heights, has to interrupt his performances and publicly admit that there is something wrong with his vocal anatomy. The question is: could the singer prevent such an occurrence? From where I sit, the answer is yes, he could. The Vocal Science ™ technique, which I developed, suggests to use less of the vocal anatomy and more of the subsidiary anatomy which actually produces more efficiency in the human voice with less, (or not at all), strain on the vocal cords and vocal box in general. The vocal cords could handle only so much pressure of the sound. Therefore, the main objective is to remove the pressure, and thus the pain and strain from the vocal cords, larynx and throat, and then to appoint the facial set of muscles to play the role of the natural amplifier or resonator. To achieve the above, the facial muscles must begin to work in full conjunction and coordination with the abdominal muscles. The abdominal muscles will provide the support for the sound to be lifted off of the vocal cords and off of the vocal box. And also, the circumference, (the body of the sound), will then be established. After the very first syllable of the word, the vocal cords will be relieved to the rest of the phrase, thus a lot of strums by the voice on the vocal cords will be saved. Like for the heart, we only have so many beats per lifetime.Similarly, the vocal cords could only handle so many strums per lifetime. The moral of this is: save and protect your voice, trying to avoid the wear and tear on the vocal anatomy. When the vocal anatomy is used excessively, it becomes dry and very vulnerable. In this instance, the singer who has a very heavy schedule, like Sam Smith, could acquire all kinds of vocal disorders, and yes, one of them could be bleeding vocal cords. If the person wears an uncomfortable shoe, he could easily get a callus on their baby toe. If the shoe, or the callus for that matter, is not removed, it starts bleeding and gets infected. The bandage with medication, which separates the shoe from the callus, could eliminate the pain and prevent the infection. So, in my opinion, for the singer whose livelihood depends on his/her voice, it is a must to learn how to separate the vocal anatomy from the pressure of the sound adapting the wholesome mechanism which includes proper breathing and, so to speak, “fuel” for the sound to fly to its aimed destination and arrive to that destination safely. However, if the damage has occurred, along with the proper technique, the use of the certain natural herbs and remedies would enhance the healing. The Non-Surgicalvoice repair course is a very serious endeavor for both the voice sufferer and the voice repair specialist. Needless to say, the voice repair clients come usually upset, frustrated and in a majority of cases, somewhat depressed. Quite a few of them literally lost they’re speaking and singing careers, or just simply their jobs. So they do have a very good reason to be upset, and yes, depressed. However, obviously those emotions are not helping the cause. So I have to be a very good psychologist, and in some cases, even a psychiatrist to be able to attend to the vocally troubled person. Obviously, the concept of my methodology is the same for everybody. However, the way I am solving their voice and vocal issues is almost every time different. I compare it with a headache. You can get rid of the headache applying different means, i.e., medical drugs, herbal remedies, deep tissue manipulation massage, or what have you. It does not really matter what is applicable for a headache sufferer. It does matter that the headache will not exist anymore. I use the same approach to solve any vocal disorder. I look and find out what is needed. Then I test several methods I have in my arsenal. And once I find the one that works, I provide the needed care. My success of doing it is unlimited! There are two stages involved in treating and educating the person with voice problem: The first stage: I instill my message on the subconscious level. It is in fact a very intellectual and intelligent method of visualization. It works on the principal of GPS, or as British people call it, Satellite Navigation, which is all good and well. Let’s say that you need to get to an unknown place only once. You don’t know where you are going and you are not planning to go there ever again. Then the GPS, (Or Sat Nav), will be very helpful. You don’t need to think, as a pleasant (usually female) voice will guide you exactly to where you are going. But if you want to learn the root and rely on your brain, you will consciously then know the exact directions to the aimed destination. Stage two: is to educate the voice repair client “what button to press on their human computer†to achieve the right outcome or “printout†so to speak, they are looking for, first with my help and then on their own. If that stage of the instruction does not “compute†so to speak, the person upon arriving back home, will have difficulties to replicate the newly found application of their speaking or singing voice. The “automatic pilot instructionâ€, which they achieved while being with me in my studio, will shortly wear off and now will bring the voice repair client almost, back to the same stage where they originally began their journey. Some people need 20-30 hours of instruction and, so to speak, ‘tightening the screws’ of the new modality of their new vocal behavior, and some people need 50, or even 100 hours to achieve that. All of it depends how balanced, mentally, physically and emotionally the person is at the beginning of the voice repair journey. If they have an open heart and soul, the belief and commitment, the success of their vocal and overall human transformation will be, indeed, unlimited. A lot of my clients come very closed in and very much in their head. One time, I was working with a client, and there was a huge noise coming out from another side of the building. I, personally, was very disturbed by it and could not wait until it will stop. I was really worried that it does disturb and distract my client from her exercises. When I asked her if she’s disturbed by this enormous noise, she looked at me, puzzled, and asked me, “which noise…?â€. She, apparently, has not heard a thing!!! That should tell you, my reader, that the person, instead of being connected with the instructor, was sitting very deeply in their own head and stewing in their own world. That alerted me immediately and I did everything in my power to establish a balance between the person’s inner and outer world, thus establish the needed connection with me and learn (manually) the proper application, in this case, of speaking voice. As I knew that when the former voice repair client comes back home, the automatic translation will wear out soon enough and the manual one was hardly established. Moreover, especially the speakers, who ruined their voices by speaking a lot, very loud and intensely, now regaining their voice, (even on the automatic pilot), come back right to the same manor and quantity of speaking, as before and more. I do warn those clients and try to bring to their level of understanding that they just left, in a manor of speaking, a rehab and they can not start running marathons immediately after. By my experience, the speakers are the most guilty of this president. They, in a manner of speaking, acquire what I call a “vocal incontinenceâ€. It is somewhat understandable, since they were deprived from the normal speech for some time before they met me, but they still do not have patience to bring it up gradually and “learn how to walk, before they start runningâ€. So my main challenge in voice repair endeavors is to get the vocal sufferer back in balance on every level and assure that they will remain to stay in total balance, with or without my presence.
