  1. Right you are :3 I was lucky because the previous band had no problems with me not being able to sing in the "metal range" all the time... That gave me the freedom to create the melodies around my voice. So I could focus on making a memorable melody instead of straining my voice xD The diaphragm is of course incorporated in most of the things I sing That vibrato in the screaming part is all diaphragm as opposed to vibrato in my chest range that I control easier by just wobbling half-notes quickly. I would hate to see my voice go lost so, aye, if it's something my voice can't do, I just have to accept that and find another approach. "Luckily" I can slide from my lowest full chest to my fullest high scream without any breaks, something which I couldn't do just six months ago, so I am able to "fake" alot of high notes because they sound connected, when in fact, I'm no longer in chest voice. But I don't like to do it since I feel I am cheating (plus I can not get a rasp in my head voice unless I want the taste of blood in my mouth within twenty minutes. I'm no doctor, but... xD). What kind of music do you preferably sing?
  2. MDEW; Yeah, I sung the harmonies as well. Some fit better than others but I think it's a lot of fun (and the best way to train my ear for that matter) It's not horribly off-pitch, just enough for me to hear it now and be annoyed at myself for not hearing it then xD agcor85: Oh! Cool I've always loved power metal but I've never been able to sing it due to a very limited high range (I couldn't take an F4 in chest if so my life depended on it). It sucked to have my voice crack while singing any Helloween, Gamma Ray or Sonata Arctica song. Now I just fail half of their songs xD But for being power metal these guys have don't have that many high parts. The note you mentioned at 2:06 is the "fall" before the "woooh-oooh-ooh" in the chorus right? I tend to connect notes in a legato-way and let end notes roll of by a slight slide, but maybe I should tone that down a bit if it makes me sound off-key xP Some habits are stylistic choices and some habits are... Bad habits I take particular interest in it since the note was in my most comfortable range B4 and above is where I have real problems with pitch because that's where I start to strain my chest voice and it tires quickly and oftentimes that narrow vowel is at a climactic point in the song where flipping to overdrive/head will just ruin the effect either by modifying the vowel or removing/changing a lot of texture in the vocals. That's one big reason why power metal (or heavy metal in general) is the genre I find to be the hardest one to sing and most demanding technically.. To survive a live gig you have to sing healthily or you will start to fail more and more notes that are NOT in head voice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsP1IhjcVIA 0:33 in this song for example. It's a slide and the easiest part to sing in the entire song but the general color just wouldn't sit well in most areas since it's such a different color than my high chest and also it's MUCH louder.
  3. I'm interested in which low notes you mean as well as high notes The only low notes are basically in the harmony to "freedom call" at the end of the chorus and the only high notes are also in harmonies (I had to sing them in a weak manner since it was late and I have a very loud voice. But I figured since harmonies are supposed to be far behind the lead, it didn't matter that they lacked body But maybe that's only valid if you know how to actually mix xD In the bridge I have a hard time hearing which line is the lead line haha xD) But I do know there are some pitch discrepansies in the harmonies, particularly in the onset And thanks for the compliment BTW! We'll see how it pans out when I visit them I put a large emphasis on being able to sing everything as well live as when recording so I will always be able to deliver what I record. Yes, including singing a four-voice harmony at the same time! Echo effect? What echo! xDDD
  4. I got a phone call from a Danish band after I put an add out. I was asked to sing one of their songs so they could hear how that would sound. It was kinda late so I couldn't record the entire song but I got the important things though The instrumental came with the click-track in it so I couldn't remove it. As always, I could not just sing it like the original (I get bored if two verses has the exact same melody and phrasing) so I did some parts differently for funsies. This is a quick recording and I can't mix worth shit (actually, calling this mixing is to offend anyone who actually have Pro-Tools installed.. and their dogs) Nowadays I have stopped thinning my voice out for the "tenor sound" I always wanted in favor of actually singing with my own voice =p They actually wanted me to fly to Denmark after hearing this so I guess I did something right Usually bands I've sung in/auditioned for have had previous singers who really sucked but this band's ex-singer could actually sing really good (I actually think he sings a lot better than me xD) https://app.box.com/s/85zfg56r9goomxkzu3ek
  5. Well Ron, you have the gift of foresight Listen to this... Earlier today I wrote an add on bandfinder.se about me searching a new band. 10 minutes goes, 10 MINUTES! before I get a phone call from Denmark. They have listened to the two songs I recorded with Archania and they want to fly me down to Denmark and hear me singing their songs and grab a few beers. They have toured Europe alot, released two albums and play on every festival possible... Take a listen; I surely will take this chance and apply my own voice to their songs.
  6. I have re-read this thread and guys, I can not thank you enough for your feedback and kind words... Been a few shaky days for the band the my confidence so from the bottom of my heart - Thank you!
  7. Hey thanks a alot Emdjyou? I am Snake hah! Let's see if I can link some of the logotypes (in case anyone is interested ) This is the hoodie I got in the mail today. I added my hair in the contoures since I didn't have that long hair when we shot those pics Also on the sleeve it says "Bring me back into the light again... ..and watch my ashes come to life!" which is half the chorus in Rise. I decided to paint my wall green and have a much lighter nuance as the logo and then shade it with black from above with strokes around but a drop shadow beneath. Been at it for 10 hours and it's not half done A gold variant with the symbol behind a bit darker. A bit cluttery I think. So I tried a a radial shadow from the bottom layer fading out with a linear reflected gradient in the front. A bit too cartoonish but all the bandies likes it alot... This is the frame I used on the back of my first black and red hoodie but whitelined and zero opacity surrounding. Evil glass symbol? This I want around my neck Hope I didn't overstate my welcome.... *blish*
  8. Well, the two guitarists and the drummer had a band for three years called Eyonize with another singer (drummers brother) and another bass player. They went to Emergenza finals vs Spitchick. Take a close listen to the singer. After they kicked the singer and the bassists they decided to start anew and found me on youtube where I sang Still Loving You by Scorpions. This was late October last year. I liked them immediately as persons. So second time we met we decided to rent a full time rehearsal local at £1600 quarterly. Everything from scratch. They didn't want to reuse any old material. It starts with a riff by either guitarist basically and some verse chord. Then I just improvise and wail as a madman in falsetto til I find something "hooky" (yes, verses must be hooky to me. I hate having two verses with the same melody xD). Optimally I record their instrumentation and create melody, harmonies and write lyrics alone til I am satisfied. The drummer initially wanted to write lyrics but he actually used "fade away", "darkness" , "aloneness" in his wordings. So I decided I would do that alone The lyrics to this song is very corny. And as I said, I remade the verse melody and lyrics and the pre-chorus the day before recording because prior to it, it felt like an insult to the song "Rise" we recorded earlier. Needed more edge, more finesse and thought. I am giving the rhythm guitarist singing lessons because he is enthused about it and I made it clear that we will have a lot harmonies (take the second prechorus in the song live... Tight, with some reverb.. MAGICAL and not lacking even though it's so airy!) I don't think of myself as that extraordinary. I do consider my STRENGTHS to be an very strong sense of melody and control/fluidity between registers and emotive singing as well as wailing around without hitting notes of key (of course, throw in a diminished chord and I strangle the cat though xD). My weaknesses are however far outnumbering my strengths but nowadays I focus more on the stability and realibility of my voice. I can't growl, or do screamo things if so my life depended on it xD I can't get into whistle register. My lowest note used to be an E but is now a G#!!!! That's weird right? And I know all about relaxation, air flow, posture and such in that regard... In Archania I am allowed to focus on my strengths and have full control over all of the melodic aspects and I love that. Because these guys write great riffs But depending on the future, I would love to cooperate over the net with someone/some people and maybe have some fun and challenge myself more... Think anyone on these boards might be interested or are we all narcissistic singers here howling for the soloist role? Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement Steve. Gave me a good boost in the fact that I actually can discent some strengths I have now. I couldn't a year ago. My voice was not at all on this level then...
  9. You are spot on Igor. IM is the main influences of drummer, bassist and lead guitarist. Rhythm guitarist likes to barbeque and drink whiskey. I brough Sonata into the palette as they're my melodious heroes :)
  10. Wow, a reply from Geno! Think it's the first time! Thanks for the uplifting words Not to say I appreciate your input lesser Ron but I feel my threads are basically you and me sharing a cup of tea :p
  11. Wow mates! I wish you knew how much those words meant to me, especially today... I may get sacked from the band Got a worrying text yesterdat night from the two guitarists.. Either way. As long as I am a part of Archania I will support us as much as I can. I love the guys, but I am aware of my shortcomings ;( http://www.facebook.com/TheArchania Ron; I want to be humble. I used to put out everything with the words "it's ok", "hope your ears doesn't bleed". I didn't think I was THAT bad but I know if someone shot me down I could fall back on my words and not break my frail singing-bone (it's a rather strange piece of human anatomy, prone to exponential osteoporosis when ridiculed. It is residing within the egotisticus narcisissus membrane between the "I am A Golden God-gland" and the nearest tin-foil hat. No but really. I always want to remain humble. Before I saw bands and heard singers "they are so good, why do I bother? They started singing early, inherent talent etc etc. And as such I got envious because everyone on both my mothers and fathers side for generations have been totally tonally inept even though my father tried for years to play the guitar and sing (Kudos to him trying but he did not improve). Now I have come to the point where I am proud of what I accomplish because I do it to the best of my ability! So when I say "Damn I sing so awesome here, listen!". It's not out of some unfounded send of self-grandeur - But because I learn thing and do things I could not do before. Melodiously, harmoniously etc. I would never say that "guys, let the master show you how it's done.. Step back, this might blow your confidence away ;)" The scream in the beginning of the song was not meant to go that high. but a third time. But when I glissed up I ended there and even our producer was like "dude.. Really? From chest voice to that without a crack?" And my bandies was also "wow.. Dude, that's the highest note you've ever taken without doing you whistle voice"... So I learn things and I want to be proud of it. Same as I want everyone here to be proud of their improvements, big, small och somewhere in between, like, uh.. "smig" If you think you do good, referemce ONLY to your earlier work. Never to celebrities. That way you are not practicing singing, but impersonation. <3
  12. Thank you Ron... As always your critique is thorough and provides a plethora of relevant trivia ;D Much obliged! Strange how no one else bother lend an ear. Not to be that guy but, damn, this is some awesome shit :O
  13. Our second studio song! This time we hired another producer (the drummer of Fatal Smile).. That guy has like.. Perfect skin texture.. ANYWAY this is a test mix, I will probably add some nerdy talk part above the second pre-chorus.. Or maybe not because I love my falsetto harmonies there.. We'll see. There would have been keyboard strings but since I have no MIDI-export in my limited Pro-Tools we had to (*auto edit*) it :/ There will be a low choir kind of harmony at the very last chorus but I decided against cluttering it up too much. The one thing I am really happy about is that I no longer have any, what's it called, passagios? So my voice don't flip or sound different when swapping registers unless I want to add like a "yodle effect" as in the second verse "paradise", "heroes" etc This is the chorus people walk around humming on after gigs Corny lyrics about us, the ardent protectors of good! I we-wrote the melody and lyrics to the first verse and the pre-chorus the day before recording because I felt they were so trivial and amateurish. The band was not very happy at first; "what are you singing dude???" xD EDIT: Funny anecdote; this was the first song from the band I showed here on the boards when we began and it was shot down for good reasons... Haha... I can't listen to that one now without cringing...
  14. Yeah! I love having a hundred voices.. Because I got a hundred feelings.. I hate it when singera handle a particular note in the same way all the time disregarding emotional context. I love Klaus Meine of Scorpions BUT he sings everything in the same way... Instantly recognizable but the songs deliver mostly on the strong melodies and his consistency pleasant voice rather than surprises and emotional journeys vocally.. In that respect Hansi Kürsch is amazing because he has a thousand voices.. Also, everything after the first verse and post-verse was improvised while recording.. Easy chord structure so it's not hard but it's still a cool feeling when you get away with it :3
  15. Hey, thanks Ron! Yeah, it's funny how that works, chicks don't like hurt emotional guys but when we sing it, they soak their panties inmediately.. I'm not complaining, I am a very emotional guy and I think it helps my singing extremely much even if it's a curse in many other areas in life One hit wonder ballads heh.. Yeah that would suck Party pumpers are the live spirit of rock and metal but.. From a singera standpoint the ballads are where I feel I can sing what I feel and control the song more.. Also it's good yo stray away a bit from the '100 metres technique masturbation' Hey akarawd did you mean the falsetto wailing part or the 'young' leading up to falsetto? Anywho I did everything singing straight up and down. The pianoparts I took out on my piano and put it in the phone.
  16. No takers? :3 Pretty much never felt so overwhelmed singing that I teared up.. I guess it's because I relate so much to the lyrics, how simple they may be...
  17. Sang it quickly in the phone, since it's late I didn't have time to sing the whole thing... But I wanted to try a "heartbroken and fragile" voice... Kinda what I am at the moment xD *facepalm* Thanks Ron.. Without you I wouldn't get my pants on in the morning! https://soundcloud.com/archdementh/no-time-for-us
  18. Thanks for the critique man :3 I have no natural vibrato and never had a vibrato at all until I heard Michael Kiske (early Helloween, Place Vendome, Unisonic) and that's when I decided I wanted one xD He does overdo them a lot (End of Unisonic - Star Rider for example). I like it but I know a lot of people who dislike it because it doesn't sound natural. My biggest concern is that the pitch shifts are identical and that the vibrato is accurate to the rhythm behind. Of course, I don't produce the vibrato at the highest end the way I do them in low and middle. That's one thing you learn really fast that you can't apply the same technique in every register to get a vibrato. At the high end it is more of a diaphragm thingy which almost makes it more of a tremolo xD So it makes sense definitely. But part is that I actually love very distinguishable vibratos :3 Hah! Yeah I'm not much of a growler but I do want to learn. I believe that it has it's place for effect once in a while. Just as I believe you can't make songs by sheer squeeling high notes, you can't make song by only growling. A high head scream is a good effect here and there, but I think the same goes for growling But yeah, I do the high screams very well (the 'eternity I'm boooound' for example that enters the last chorus is a great and very controlled head scream) , but not growling -.- For the life of me I can't figure it out ;
  19. Thanks for taking your time to listen Jug :3 The band is great and thanks to finally recording a song we got some very interesting/surprising attention that I did not think we would get this early to be honest o_O
  20. Thanks mate! We've been together for 8 months now (with the last 2 being a break due to everyones different vacation schedules) and I am really glad that we get closer to our musical core in such a good pace. I can't look 2 months back without feeling that a comparison would be apples and oranges. I have these boards to thanks for my steady voice development. I don't comment much on other people's work but I listen a lot and try to analyze an understand. Helps greatly with getting control over my own voice The great feedback is invaluable... Mostly it's compliments but if there is something weird or wrong I can trust that the forumites will notice it and point it out before I make something a bad habit or simply what I need to practice on.
  21. Haha thanks xD Weird what you can do with your phone nowadays It's my whistling with a bit of reverb.
  22. Was a bit late so the second part became crappy since my neighbours apparently don't share the whole insomnia-thingy Just for funsies but this is what I think my voice does best. Silly because it's just that, silly =p https://soundcloud.com/archdementh/my-horse
  23. Hey thanks! Yeah it wasn't terribly expensive either! $500 for the entire song with the mixing. Took me 4 hours to record it and my voice actually wasn't broken afterwards seeing as I got a naturally very clean voice without any natural grit and here I actually sang with my balls. Next time we'll record one of the more catchy tunes where the choruses are more hookish. But this song is the more aggressive in the bunch, was really fun.
