That's an interesting idea! I'll have to give it a try and post the results. I know exactly what you mean about the way he sings too.
-
I had a tough time with this one as you can tell but checkout the portion I recorded and tell me how I did and hopefully how to do it better!

Funny you should mention the throttling down in a heavier coordination because I had to do exactly that in a couple of parts! That high pitched stuff works great for certain Judas Priest songs too such as Painkiller or the chorus of Devil's Child.
-
Thanks bro! I have the same trouble trying to maintain that tone in the upper mids. The really high parts are actually easier which might surprise a lot of people who don't sing this style. I really want to master this type of voice and then I'll have a much more complete rock voice.

Decided to try out a new sound for my voice since my sinus surgery and tonsillectomy not long ago. I could never sing this style before so this is exciting new territory.Let me know how I'm doing gang!

What does GIDDYUP mean??...(Besides riding horses??....and remember I'm Welsh) :/
It's a line from an episode of the tv show Seinfeld of which I'm a huge fan. The character Kramer says it whenever he's about to go somewhere. It appears at the bottom of all my posts Don and wasn't directed at you personally.

Seeing as he is a newbie here on the forums I think he may be wondering why only one person has responded so far. It sometimes takes some time for people to tear away from our busy lives and take some time to post.

Nicely done Don!

Hmm, I wonder if I'm one of the singers who should take up brick laying instead?
-
Nice to see his true colors eh gang?

Hey gang,
With Mother's Day coming soon I thought I'd record something appropriate for you to critique. This is the song My Yiddishe Momme and I'm singing it accapella. It's hard to stay on pitch with no reference music so bear with any bad moments! lol
I'm trying to sing from my chest up into my head voice without a huge change in tone so let me know how I did and how I can improve.
Thanks everyone!

The AC/DC track kicked ASS buddy! VERY good job on sounding like the younger Brian Johnson. I've been trying to achieve that tone since my recent surgeries (tonsillectomy and sinuses) but still need lots of work. You sounded wicked on the chorus in particular!!!
-
The second take was so much better sounding! Great job dude. The one piece of advice I can give is to really FEEL the lyrics as you're singing them and don't focus so much on the technique at hand. I can hear the difference when you are "lost" in the song and feeling it more.
Keep it up!

"faithfully" is a toughee if you intend to emulate perry.
I pretty much gave up on the idea of rying to sound like him many years ago! lol
I've only ever heard one singer who is identical and he sings for the Journey Tribute band Evolution. His name is Hugo and he even looks like steve Perry also which is scary!!! Check him out here... http://www.hugotunes.com/about_us.html

I hear some really good potential in you my friend! Once you get some of the fundamentals worked out, you will be on your way to greatness! Glad to have you share your voice with us. :)

Thanks Robert. I actually have an old friend that I used to do karaoke shows with and he has nearly every karaoke song ever put out! I'll ask him for it. I just started to record the song "Jane" by Jefferson Starship. That's a really high one for me!
-
Hi Robert. I didn't transpose it but the backing track I found online may be lowered. I thought it felt a little slower than the original. I'll have to check out the Journey version now and see if you're right. Most of the song was in the area of my passagio and took careful breath control not to over sing or flip into falsetto. I was actually thinking about your lift up pull back before I hit record!
-
Hey gang,
Love to get some feedback on how I did singing Faithfully by Journey. I'm working hard on singing in my head voice more and using more air support but less air flow. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

I stand corrected. I'm like you in that I'd like to be able to use grit as an effect when I want it and sing clean when I want to. Michael Sweet from Stryper is a perfect example of doing that. His voice is so pure and clean and then when he wants he can add the most soul ripping grit to his screams!

If I had any knowledgeable info I'd be happy to post it bro. I think that some singers just have more natural gruffness in their voices. I noticed that in a video I saw of Steven Tylers vocal folds, he did seem to have some mucous present in that area which seemed to give him the sound he's famous for. It was cool seeing his vocal tract as he sang chest and head voice!

Here's a song I never thought I'd be able to sing till i learned from all of you here! http://www.box.net/shared/ye5noqanez
Now if only I could afford a nice Pearlman microphone instead of using my Shure SM 57! lol

My honest impression is that you should be on the radio with that great voice! Very sweet tone and nice vibrato too. Keep up the great singing my dear.
-
Wow, thanks Steve! What great feedback. I've got to be one of Tom Jones biggest fans and I especially love his very early stuff. His voice is nothing short of incredible with tender moments intermingled with raw explosive power! Definitely one of my all time biggest vocal influences.

Thanks for the kind words Charlotte. I'll take your advice.
Second attempt at an AC/DC song. Back In Black this time!

Thanks Olem.
I liked your AC/DC songs too. It's very tough to imitate Brian Johnson but being able to sing along with AC/DC feels soooo good!
