  1. He's an indie artist by the name of Toro Y Moi... I've always enjoyed his songs but always have thought he had a rather mediocre and boring voice. I mean it fits his songs but I've always just found it kind of dull and almost like there's nothing to it you know?

Here are some of his songs:

Good vibes though, for sure. What do you think of his voice / singing and what would would you rate his voice / singing out of ten? Id rate his singing / voice a 6.5-7/10. But the actual songs 7-9/10 in my opinion.

Let me know what you think! :)

  2. It sounds completely pitchy from start to finish. Hold the support more and constantly push down on the diaphragm.

I don't know how you sounded before but this isn't good at all -- not yet. If you have improved then you will reach your goal. Again practice, build and apply a lot more support. It will help with pitch a lot.

Hi David, I've only been singing for a few months now but yes... I can deff. hear improvement from previous recordings. It's pretty sad hearing someone say "This isn't good at all". But I agree, it doesn't sound too great. With that being said, I do think there are parts that show potential and also this is a step up from previous recordings in the past. At the moment, I am not that great at all at singing, but I realize where I need to improve and how I'm going to do it! Hard work pays off and so far I think it has been paying off for me because I was 10x shitter months ago than I am now. Thanks for the constructive criticism Dave.

And here is my e-mail, ianhorstb@gmail.com Please send me an e-mail, It would be awesome to talk to you. :)

  3. The difference between before and now is tremendous. Yes you are still going off pitch. The fact that you can tell that you are off pitch is what has made the difference. You will continue to get better. ;)

Thanks MDEW, to me some parts seem on pitch and some words or sentences seem off aswell. Do you hear it this way too? Or is it more so EVERYTHING sounds off pitch?

Thanks for all the feedback thus far.

  4. thanks guys, I appreciate all the feedback and I will continue to work hard and improve with time! :D

edit: to me it sounds like mostly all of these are sliiiightly off pitch at times. Does anyone else hear it too? Before, my biggest problem was that i couldn't sing on pitch at all..I've gotten better in the pitch aspect but still... Things still sound a bit off pitch to me at times. Is this something that will get better or correct itself over time? Or are there exercises to help correct this little pitch problem?

And in your opinion, do all of the recordings sound slightly off pitch all the way through, or is it just when I say certain words? If I could get an answer regarding this question it would seriously mean a lot to me! :)

  5. I'm on a quest to become a good singer. I've been on this quest for a few months now. To track my progress, I'm going to be posting singing snippets for various indie songs... so me, singing over other peoples songs! This way, I'll be able to look back and see where I need improvement and whether or not I am actually making improvement. But the biggest part and importance of all of this, is that it's fun. I have tonsa fun singing over other peoples songs and working on my craft.

What I'm about to post is a huge leap up from any songs I've recording in the past. Hearing songs I recorded months ago and then hearing this is just plain and simply awesome because I can actually hear the improvement... Here are my singing snippets for March, 2013:

The last snippet is my personal favorite. :)

  6. Please don't start a topic post by lining up the excuses first - just give it your best shot and let us hear what you've got :)

As for the singing, I think you are holding back, as if you didnt want the person in the next room to hear you. Sing out!

    George

Thanks George, but I was giving it everything I got and my mom was in the room next to me sleeping, lol. I thought I was going to get a lot of negative comments so I posted a disclaimer saying that it's not that good. I actually think the recording was decent and I'm noticing a lot of improvement, and that's what counts! :D thanks for the comment

  7. Hey guys, thanks for the feedback, and I'm not embarrassed by my voice at all. I guess shouldn't have said "it's not very good" multiple times even though I actually think its good. To be honest I'm pretty proud of this recording as well as my most recent ones because it really shows how much I have improved in such a short amount of time. And regarding the airy vocals, I was going for something a bit more airy, but I agree that its too airy sounding at times. And I'm doing Brett Manning's Singing Success at the moment as well as singing to the piano and guitar, and so far I'm really happy with the results. Thanks for the advice though Keith.

edit: Next time I post my vocals I'll be more honest in my OP.. (and they will also sound a lot better then because I will have improved! :) ) I can only get better guys!!

  8. here is a short little clip that I recorded earlier today. Let me know what you think.. I'm not that great of a singer at the moment (I will be one day though), I've only been doing this seriously for a good two months, but the progress I have made thus far has been immense!

    Here is the link:

    http://picosong.com/3BST/

As I said before, it's not very good, but it's a hell of a lot better then when I first started, any feedback would be appreciated! :)

(I am the first male singer, not the second female vocalist)

  9. Well. You have a nice sound. I like it. If you were more on pitch, this could actually be pretty good.

Your user name and the clip didn't match for me, due to the quality of your voice. But definitely, pitch is pretty important to work on at the moment. I can't tell you how to do that though, since that was my force when I began.

When you've over time have gotten good pitch, you could easily be called a good singer.

How's your range at the moment? I started out couldn't hit C4 (middle c), but here's two clips of me now:

    http://www.rofleren.dk/music/Movie_0007.wmv

A few days ago I made a breakthrough into the head voice area. I'm vocalizing F5's in the clip. I've never gone so high without going into falsetto. You don't have to like the sounds made in this clip to appreciate the fact, that when you have a good teacher (I only had him for four weeks, Eli Prinsen) he can show you awesome stuff. Right now the quality of "that voice" is only going to get better. But that's a sing with singers, if you haven't already noticed; there are some weird sounding exercises out there.

This is me in my first and only performance ever (in front of my entire school)

This guy, check out all the videos by him, made me able to "twang" into middle voice.

<-- This was like the KEYSTONE for me being able to go higher than F#4, which became my stopping block.

All three very different sounds, and once I can integrate them all together, it's going to be awesome.

Btw. I still as many others, are confused about what is head voice, mixed voice and chest voice. I've settled for what my current teacher says it is. It doesn't really matter in the end anyway, and if you really try to listen to everyone it's only going to confuse you. At least it did for me.

Thanks for all the helpful info Rofleren! I listened to your clip and seen your performance! They both sound awesome. :) Like you said, it would be better if it was more on pitch. I'm just a begginer and one of my issues is singing consistently on pitch. I'm thinking that a vocal coach will definitely help with that. As far as my range, I can only sing upto d4 in my chest voice, then after that I go right into my head voice. I can sing upto c5 in my head voice. But at the moment my head voice doesn't sound all too good. Very thin, and somewhat breathy.

Does singing in your mix voice allow you to sing higher notes than just your chest voice? Because one of my goals is to sing higher in my chest / mixed voice without going into my head voice.

As far as the vocal coaching from the person you suggesting... I really appreciate the gesture but I think I'd be more comfortable doing the lessons in person rather than online. That's just me though, I don't know what it is but I find I learn better and have more fun when there is someone teaching me in person. Regarding the whole head / mix / chest voice and trying to listen to everyone... It does get really confusing with me. With some singers like The Weeknd, his voice is so damn high I can never tell if he's singing in his mix or head voice... very confusing.

Thanks for all the help! I will be changing my username, and constantly be getting better at singing (I hope).

  10. The first thing you should do if you want to be a good singer, is to make a new profile with another user name.

"IAmGoingToBeAnAwesomeSinger" for example. If you think of yourself as a bad singer, it's going to be harder to progress than if you having a more optimistic mindset about it. Even though you might say "I will improve", you need to believe it before you physically start it! And I'm sure you can do that.

Everyone can learn to be a good singer, and you definitely have a good foundation.

Go make a new profile and come back :)

Damn, literally half of the people I talked to said the same thing, so I am requesting a username change. But with that being said, it's just the username I selected, it doesn't really reflect my mindstate accept for the fact that I know im not a good singer... YET. Thanks for the kind words and advivce :)

Is there any way you could elaborate on the "good foundation" statement? :D

  11. Okay I just started singing a while ago, so I am pretty bad at the moment. I just started doing Brett Mannings Singing Success the past two weeks. This is more of a reference point for me to remember how much I improved, once I actually start improving. And I know I will! Anyways, the song is by City and Colour, I only listened to it about three times, by no means did I try to emulate them musically or vocally, or even ryhtmatically (is that even a word?) for that matter. Again, I just started singing, and did this in about 5 takes, so please excuse the whiny voice at times.
