  1. By the way Enander, how long have you trained to sound like that?
  2. I am glad you guys like it. Gonna post a full cover and work more on the phrasing. Regarding singing after drinking, i think it was Jim's own technique :-) Well, it works to a certain extent. If you listen to LA Woman, you can hear Jim's vocal agony, the result of years of self abuse. And yet, damn, i love his voice on this album which, by the way, is for me one of their best.
  3. I indeed though Jim was saying " asian lady " thinking it was a reference to the vietnam war. And then, " Give up your vows " because in times of war they could be widowed or abused. Thanks for the correction, I misconstrued the lyrics. Yes i like Jim's texts. A few years ago i was reading a lot of poetry stuff and i stumbled on " An american prayer", and liked it a lot.
  4. Man i just listened to your "Number of the beast". I don't know much of your curent neighboor but if i was among them, i would knock on your door and bow before your awesomeness. " Sir Enander, would you accept to teach me how to sing like this". Thus being said, you chose a very gritty and evil approach on this song. If i remember, Bruce's style is a bit brighter and operatic. But thats a matter of taste and i really like your version.
  5. Hello Gilad I think Felipe summed up well what you have to work on. I did not listen to the original song but it seems to ascend gradually while at the same time it is important to maintain quality of the tone you have at the beginning. Covering would be arguably a suitable strategy on the high spots. Thus being said, it was very pleasant to listen to.
  6. I am going to agree with what has been said above. You have a distinct vocal signature and it is very valuable. I am going to listen to it again to provide some tecnical feedback but overally, it sounds great.
  7. I woke up this morning after a drinking night and my voice was a lower than usual. I don't really know what happened, but i could mix up my usual tone with vocal fry, at least thats how it feels. I would like to know if the light rasp i got is the result of the false folds or simply creaking. I will try tomorow again when my voice will be rested. I love this light rasp! https://www.box.com/s/s8mbacjslj07w0aldur4
  8. Lord Adon, that’s awesome! Tell us a bit more about how you do it. Are you mixing your chest voice with vocal fry to produce this tone. If you want something inspiring, listen to Yuri Wichniakov : It seems there is also another technique to produce very low notes that I wanted to share here, because I lately have been interested in polyphonic chants. See at 4.15, this is really impressive. And when you hear this guy talking, I don’t think this guy is a basso. I think the notes are produced with the false vocal folds.
  9. Thanks a lot for the feedback. I actually was thinking that with time, i could cover enough my head tones to do justice to this song, but it seems that i have to opt out for a different approach. I will try to add more chest musculature instead of covering, and will come up with another attempt
  10. Hey Ron, As a Led Zep fan, you would love to discuss with our drummer. He is so into it, he told me he has a zepplin tatoo on his right arm. He convinced us to cover the Rock and roll song by the way. I gonna work on that and will show up with another video!
  11. Hello guys, I have been rehearsing with my rock band since Jannuary at a steady pace and we have enough to ensure at least 45 minutes, which is the required time for live sessions. We will have two gigs scheduled for May and two other live sessions in June. I did a small video that is aimed at showing what we play, I would love to have some critics and suggestions! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iA14oIOw5U
  12. Yes, this one is better than the previos videos. you are improving both your live singing and stage presence. Also, the way we sing live is definitely not the way we do it in studio. This is what makes it so damn hard when you sing primarily in curbing and when everybody is playing loud and you are in the mist of it, you switch to overdrive/high belts. Nice job, looking forward to see your next performances!
  13. I never pretended to be a baritone, although i believed i was when i started singing. I had a singing teacher for a while two years ago and she told me i was definitely a tenor. But you probably suggest that this song and style of singing don't really fit the timbre of my voice, is it right, as i was trying to sound more like a baritone. I can lower more my larynx to make the sound darker, but thats all i can do indeed. Regarding my range, my belts peak at A4, A#4 currently. My teacher told me that it was not uncommon and that she could hear that with some training i would be able to sing higher notes consistently. I have listened to your cover, it is great you can sing a g2, even if it is a tenorish g2 hehe. I am able to sing g2 only when my voice is relaxed, and when i start being warmed up or sing high notes, i frequently lose it. Anyways, your intuitions are good, i am defs a tenor
  14. hello ron, https://www.box.com/s/a12hf1dku3q17zjoccn9 Heres the single track version of the song. for the dual tracks, i even wanted to add other ones ( i didn't add other effects ) to make it sound like some kind of tribal chants. I often double tracked my songs, because i thought it sounds more studio like and less pitchy. I will soon get a better sound card because i find my voice sounds a bit compressed and because i have issues with mic overloading whennever i try to cover my head voice.
  15. It seems there is a current trend featuring songs with lower pitches than usual. I would like to add my own, and although it isn't super low, Morrisson had a "baritonish" way of singing it. Also, this song is great to practise and try new things. here it is : https://www.box.com/s/rss54epukb5f1tmwnqoy hope you like it!
  16. Thats awesome! Before geting pillars, i used to watch all the TVS available videos. And there was this one, where you could see this guy, Stillborg, training, doing some sirens and practising vocal twang. Amazing progress, really. I am really impressed by these A4's. For me this is currently one, if not the hadest note to sing. At some point when he sustains the note, he seems to lose a little bit his resonance, or support less, but the overall performance is great. Also, the overall sound is indeed well balanced. Went to a bar recently to see talented people but their performance has been ruined because of bad balances ( with the singer overloading the mic to make himself heard and so on)
  17. Hey Ron, I remember you did cover of Fullmoon about one year ago or so. It had some flaws, but it sounded like a one take, as you said in another post, you usually record in single takes. I think both your chest and head tones are more powerful than mine and resonate more consistently. I think you would do a great cover had you worked on the song as much as i did :-) I agree with you about hearing the backing vocals of Tony Kakko... its a bit frustrating because his voice makes mind sound totally beginner. But the instrumental is pretty cool and thats why i kept this track.
  18. Hello guys, One year ago or so, i posted an attempt to sing this song by Sonata Arctica, in order to get some concrete advice on the bridging, connecting, and calibration process as the whole song is right in the passagio. https://www.box.com/s/255gbwx8y2yi3esotbgf Here is an attemps one year later. I would be really interested in precise feedback on how to be more homogeneous on all the notes i sing. I got Pillars and work everyday doing sirens and other stuff. In my training session, i start to have really good head tones, especially my A#, Bs, high Cs and everything above. As usual, the problem are with lower passagio notes. I can sustain a A4 in chest voice, but i want to be able to sing this note in a deep head placement. Any thought and advice would be appreciated : i would really love to post here a killer cover of this song someday! Many people successfully bridge and connect. Would like to get their thoughts.
  19. Thank you guys for the feedback. Our lead guitar player show the video to his friends and it seems they were really divided regarding the vocal lines ( they are quite unsual compared to the rest of our set ). The ones who disliked seemed argued that the pitch was too high throughout all the song ( they suggested that it could for instance be lowered on the verses ). But then, i don't know, maybe what they meant is that the high notes are too " heady " and that i have to add some meat. Actually, i hope it is more about the sound color than he melody itself, because i find it cool as it is. Well, i like the song, and so do the other band members, but i would also like to drive the audience in a live session.
  20. Hey Ron, Thanks for your imput! I was thinking that I have made enough progress to start posting here some recordings. When I first saw the video I was a bit disappointed because of the pitchiness and because it seems that many of the ornametations on my voice ( for instance, i go for a light rasp or creaking on the high notes ) vanish in live conditions. As the sound device was turned towards the audience, i sometimes coudldn't hear myself clearly. My vibrato was also gone. Live singing is a totally different experience for a "closet singer" like me. The simple fact that I have to sing in a high volume setting modifies the way I usually sing. About the voicetone, i initially was searching for something with more " thickness " but when i tried with this light head voice the members of the band, included myself, found that it gave a good vocal signature to the whole sound. I think i will try to make it a bit darker but the style won't change. I am going to upload more stuff
  21. Hello guys, it has been a long time that i haven't posted something. I got Pillars for christmas and many of the piano vocalizes have become a daily routine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fn8SUp7N8E&feature=youtu.be Here is a song called " Anxiety ", and i am currently working it with my band. There are a lot of super tricky notes for me, especially As and Bs because i don't want to pull chest up there ( my highest belt is A anyways, after that, things become very random and shouty ). I am the one who composed the song and i don't wish to change the notes because they are difficult. I just have to work on my voice to sing this damn song :-) What do you think about it?
  22. I liked it. Catchy melodies (it was stuck in my head after listening to the song) and good vocal signature. I also agree with Guitargeorges regarding the minor flaws. Looking forward to see more stuff of your own.
  23. Interesting thread indeed. I have been lurking on this forum for about a year and have remained silent because i thought the most experienced singers won't have time to bother to tell me what i can improve. I hold this forum as the best on the internet, regarding singing technique, and I would be really glad to have one day the singing level of some of the active forum members posting here. I have hesitated about posting reviews on singing performances which were higher than mine. Probably I should have, but then, i would have judged the artistic interpretation rather than the technical level. I also agree with the idea that if you think something is wrong in one's singing, you have to say it. You are going to do more harm than good by not saying it. But yeah, as Ron said, there are many ways of telling things. Voice is something quite personal, its part of someone's appearance and personality, its a bit more intimate than lets say, a guitar or a bass play.
  24. OldPainless, This is the reason why i registered in a technical forum, to get advices and go forward! I have been training for two years, so I can be considered as a beginner, compared to many members of this forum. Woking on posture and support, good idea. Reagrding my fear of not being heard, I can tell you that i don't give a damn, and I prevented my neighboor :-). But if it SOUNDS like i am holding something, then this is bad. I thought my singing had gained enough confidence to avoid this kind of thing. For the low part of the high notes, I agree with you, although i don't know yet if i have to belt them in chest voice or if i have to strenghten my head voice to make them sound better. I also think i have neglected them because I anticipated the high notes. I do not take your criticism badly, the contrary. And I hope other people in this forum are not holding themselves.
  25. Thanks Ron! When i posted my first attempt one year ago, you were the first to comment it, and it was way more flawed than this one. Back then, you gave me a couple of advices which were useful too, because my head tones were a bit squishy. For the "er" sound, i guess it has to do with my French accent. Gonna correct this. Also, I think I have still trouble to maintain consistency on low head tones, like A4, and i have to get closer to the mic when i sing them. But if I stay at the same distance when i ascend up to E5, the mic gets overloaded. And for the guitar job, I picked a Youtube guitar cover, which sounded better than most karaoke tracks.
