@aaravin this is what I mean:

First more on the direction of what you did on the song, then how I would try to go if I was trying to emulate Bruce and how I believe will help you (get the quality of the low range on All the Young dudes and dont hold back the energy), and then how I normally sing it which sounds best in my voice in my opinion.

The higher area of the chorus you have to round, but, it sounds really cool if you open on "run" and it will make the phrasing easier too. First sample of the chorus is all rounded, second sample opens on run and rounds on the rest. To get that narrow sound Bruce does I would aim the sound directly up (its what I do normally), to go for a more centered approach just lift the placement a little bit but keep it forward, will sound different but more natural.

    Hope it helps!

This needs a strong support to work well though, or else you will end up flipping when you enter head voice which does not sound so nice on these songs.

Hey Felipe.. Thanks a lot for producing the sample audio.  I think it will take me several weeks to digest the information, keep experimenting with my voice and come up with my next version.

    Hi Folks..

I have put up a few versions of this song earlier which were not too impressive.  I am now beginning to get a lot more control on the passagio area, especially with a more "open" sound.  I have two areas that I would appreciate feedback

    1.  Looking at my singing, I seem to be using more horizontal embouchure than vertical.  I only very recently started looking at my singing in the mirror.  Is there anything wrong in my embouchure.  I am looking for dark tones in the upper range.  Does a horizontal embouchure produce a "brighter" sound?

    2.  The second question is with respect to the mix and mic placement.  My wife says I sound much better in person than what I am able to get the mix in my recordings to sound.  This does not help me at all since we don't hear exactly our voice in the manner we sound to others.  What could I be doing wrong?  She says I sound very different in my recordings. Is this a function of the average quality of backing track or is it a mix issue?  Any pointers would be very helpful.  The mic I am using in this a Shure beta 58A.  I record in an untreated room.

3 - Through the whole song and into the chorus, go for the more open quality, and ONLY when pitch rises, let the placement lift and the vowel round more, the position is similar to what you are doing on the chorus now but you can't back off the energy, if you change the vowel and place it higher like you are used to, the quality will adjust, don't do anything else. I would practice this on All the Young Dudes too, he does it on the chorus, going from open to narrow back to open.

Hi Felipe.  Thank you for your detailed feedback.  I uunderstand when you say "open quality" but what exactly are you referring to in the bolded portion above?  Is it a physical sensation(like rounding of the lips) or a vowel modification?  Can you please clarify?

Hey Aravind, Congrats for taking on such hard song. I thought you sounded really good on the chorus man! What are you trying to change in this song? I think you just need to keep on singing it to make it your own. Very good! :beerbang:

Hi Gneetapp.  I am trying to get the chorus to sound more meaty.  I realize as I get better with mixing, some of the really awesome sounding vocals have a lot to do with how they are mixed and whether they are double tracked.. So whether I can improve on my weight in the range, I am not sure ! :)

  5. Thanks Ron, for always being the sane voice in this forum.  You have a way of putting things that make total sense.. Maybe there needs to be more weight in the chorus I don't know.. I don't need to sound like Bruce(nobody can), but I was hoping something along the lines of you are using Edge, Bruce uses overdrive(do not mean literally, but you get the idea).  I want to know what I could do with my physiology to create a similar sound.  If it is not possible, I can live with it...

Maybe I will indeed attempt "Fear of the dark"! :)

  6. I am now beginning to gain the confidence to start taking on tough songs.  I wish I could get more chord closure on the F#5 in this recording(would love for it to sound more full).  It is also a very tough vowel for me("E" vowel).

This kind of singing is out of my comfort zone. Always tough to get the right emotion when one has to sing on themes like war, death, evil etc :)

Thanks to folks who listen and drop in a sentence or two.

  7. You sound awesome on Have you really loved a women. I thought you sounded ok on IRIS but by far better on Have you Really loved a women. My main tip would be to work on pitch. I have problems with pitch sometimes too and its always because im being lazzy and not listening

Hi Jarom.  Thanks.. How does one train pitch?  I did both these songs in around 40 min including, so my intention here was not to be exactly on pitch and I was indeed a bit lazy.  But having listened to my recording, I am not able to spot pitchy areas in "Have you really loved a woman".  Can you please point out specific times in the song where you feel the pitch is really off?  Maybe I need to start training my ears along with training singing voice.  Any tips on how this can best be achieved?

  8. Hi Folks..
I used to have major issues in both these songs.. They cut across my passagio and I always was unsure about the right vocal weight for these songs.. I had major issues in transitioning from a comfortable low-med range to the high notes above my passagio.

It has taken a long time for me to reach this level and I am in general happy about the outcome for now.  Obviously, there is always scope to improve :)

As always, any tips suggestions on improvement are welcome...

PS: Now that I have heard these songs, I think I know what other members have pointed out about a slightly cartoonish tone.  I am beginning to hear the places where this happens(think this is because of the laziness in focusing on the "easier" notes).

  9. Hi Good folks in this forum.  I am back after a gap.  I have been busy with work and also on trying to improve my technique.  So I wanted to take a break and post after I felt like I made progress.. I also had some issues with getting my credit card to work!!!

IT was pointed to me last time around that the effort during my belting was very much obvious and it sounded strained.  In my quest to fix this problem, I have gone back to drawing board(won't we all love to sing full sounding F4-C5 without strain:) )  and tried to address it in a way that works for me and here is the outcome.

This was a single take, so there are a few pitchy spots. But please point out any flaws you here purely from a tonal quality.

Thanks in advance to anyone who drops in a few words..

  10. I love the emotion and power in your voice. Some minor point: Something didn't seem quite right about the transition in the long beeeeeeeee at the beginning to my ears. But I may be mistaken. Really would love to be able to sing rock like that!

Wakawaka, thank you for your kind words.  I put in a lot of work on my singing and it has taken me nearly two years to reach this level.  I still find that there is a lot of scope for improvement.  The learning never stops, provided one is willing to put in the work to learn.

  11. Hi Aravind, I gave the first listen yesterday, but had no time to write anything afterwards. So, I just gave it another listen, and I got to say man, You have improved your singing so much on your own, that is really fun to watch all your progress in your journey. This is a really hard song from QUEEN, so congrats for facing this challenge. I really like your tone in this song, as you were able to dial down the nasality to a minimum. Still, in the choruses you still have a shouty quality. I don't think you need to change the key. Sexy Beast just gave you the Secret Formula to sing not only this song, but many others. You got to do the same configuration you did for "Too many bitter tears are raining down on me" and apply it to the choruses. I am probably wrong, but you might be using "the cry" to achieve that configuration. If you do that in the choruses you will not sound strained a bit. Great job man! Keep on Rocking!

Thanks for your kind words.  Yes, I am mostly self taught, but not entirely.  I have got a lot of help on this forum to be honest.  I think I have a long way to go..

I can't describe exactly what Sexy Beast suggests technically.  Except to say that the "feeling" of singing too forward is slightly different from "singing slightly backward".  When I sing too forward, I literally feel as thought the source of the sound is in front of my mouth.  Moving this sensation slightly backward is what I think SexyBeast is referring to.

Understanding this is one thing.  Putting it into practice is very very different.  Like I mentioned in my reply to SexyBeast, I have to unlearn certain things in my singing style to be able to accomplish this and train muscle memory to react slightly different. But I think i can do this and I am excited to try out songs with a more belty feel

  12. Well I was pleasantly surprised with this! You're still singing too forward but this is in a better direction. Listen to how you are singing: "Too many bitter tears are raining down on me" @ 0:22. This is the correct approach for this range. I have never heard you do that before. Can you sing the chorus like this?

You also need way more legato under your voice. For that you can sing the melodi on any semi-occluded exercise like the straw, lip rolls, v, z, you name it... and keep the same feeling when you are singing the words.

SexyBeast, you are a genius.  I think I finally understand what you mean by "singing too forward".  This is probably why I have a sharp sounding voice and it gets more amplified in a belty configurations.  I think I should be able to sing chorus in the same way I sing that particular line.  I realize that singing "slighly backward" gives a more deeper tone which will certainly help.  I tried doing this last night.  For the same song, I have to re-learn the configuration and the muscle memory to bridge.  And I guess this is a habit that I have to inculcate for similar type of songs.

I am going to try this for my next song..

  13. Readers of my posts know that Freddie Mercury is my favorite singer.  I have always wanted to sing Queen songs(even if I don't do a great job of them :))

I have done a couple of takes of this very song with mixed, mostly average results.  I am confident enough in my singing and my technique to post an update.  Please comment specifically if possible on the belting/aggressive portions of the song.  Also to me the chorus sounds a bit too sharp(piercing to listen to and not in a good way).  Not sure if this is a singing technique issue or an error in mixing(or both).
