No man, not boring at all! You've got a mellow voice - I'm pretty sure it matches your personality - so don't try to run away from it.

One of the challenges when singing a mellow song, at least for me, is to get enough 'bite' to the sound without making it sound aggressive. Coincidentally, I've been working on Tequila Sunrise recently, trying to get that balance right.  What do you think?

    RIP Glenn Frey, 1948 -2016

Sounds like a decent approach. Some well-placed emphasis goes a long way. And if that's not a natural accent, you definitely had me fooled.

Here is one for Glenn. I decided to just go ahead and post it as is. The more I messed with it the worse it got.

    Comments welcome anyway.............:)

All good to me, MDEW. You've got a distinct voice, and I do agree that it's pleasant to listen to. And if you really could use an opinion on what to do next, I'd actually like to see what you would do with When Doves Cry. :D

I liked that, Felipe. I recorded that one the day after he passed. Might do a bit of a remaster at some point for more fidelity.

I liked Ronws singing Space Oddity too. Actually I've liked everything everyone has done so far. This thread has some of the highest batting average of our challenges.

Loved it, Killer. Can always hear the passion with you, and you always implement a subtle accompaniment. Exactly the way I would do it, if I could play

R.I.P David Bowie, once for actually passing and another for me slaughtering his music.  Nevertheless, here is my nearly late cover of "Starman" In tribute to the Starman himself who most certainly is back home planning his next visit to Earth right now. :)

Always so hard on yourself, lol. Another one I haven't heard. It wouldn't be a challenge if you chose an easy song to sing. Feel free to polish it in here.

    Reaper here.

I noticed some folks record acoustic guitars to sing along. I have a tip that works wonderfully with any 2 channels interface.

    - Record the guitar using two channels, one with a mic in level with your ears, and close to you, pointing to the fretboard, another with the line out (if the guitar has some sort of pickup, if not, another mic pointing to the bridge).

    - On the first mic (fretboard), apply some compression, not more than 3:1, with a very short attack, perhaps even 0 attack. This will be the "center" channel, and will carry body and warmth.

    - On the line out/bridge mic, apply a high pass filter, cutting everything bellow 100Hz, or even higher if you can get away with it, experiment. Also apply compression, but now, leave a decent attack time, something between 5 and 15ms should work nicely. This will be your "side" channel.

Now for the trick, duplicate the second channel (line out/bridge), pan the original hard left, and the copy hard right. Then on either of them, this is up to you, unlock the "snap to grid" feature of your DAW and DRAG manually the whole track so that it gets out of sync by a few miliseconds. The offset should be visible with a good amount of zoom but it should be quite gentle, don't overdo.

And that's it, a simple technique that can be done with almost any DAW default tools. It will sound rather good, provided that you play it properly (something I can't do :( )

This should prove to be quite helpful. Do you play guitar at all, Felipe? I think we may be the only two on the forum who don't, lol.

  4. I'm now remembering that, some months ago, we were working on voting for a song for one of our new genre challenges. One song seemed to get a lot of suggestions, but because of the selection process, it did not get chosen.

Things must be kept uniform and fair, but the most important thing that goes on here is that we choose the challenge songs that everybody wants to sing.

With that being said, who would still be up for an I Can't Make You Love me Challenge? :D

Don't have a clue what I want to do for this yet. Love what everyone has posted so far! At least there is the rest of the year.

I think that might be a nice idea, because some people are so pressed for time that they end up not even trying to do something, if they feel they're going to run out of time.

I'd like for it to get to the point in here where people start posting things as they're working through them, rather than not putting anything up until it's a finished product.

Great idea GSoul! Thinking of another tribute or two already.

This will give me the chance to switch my style up again. I mean, it's Prince, so I wouldn't call it an easy song to sing, but it's also a soul song, which is right up my alley. I like to push myself as much as I can.

  6. Nice one, MDEW. I almost forgot how you sound. You get this folklike quality pretty easily.

Enjoyed that one, Ron. First time I ever heard that entire song.

I think you pretty much decided it for me, Killer. Time for me to pick back up that guitar. Not bad at all. I know how limited time can be so feel free to take your time with it. And that actually brings me to the next thing.

How about we let this one go to the end of 2016? It would give everybody the opportunity to do multiple tributes and take their time. Of course, we'll still be doing new challenges while this goes on. We'll get some variety in this sub-forum.

And hopefully we don't lose anybody else this year. :)

  7. As we just about come up on the halfway point of 2016, we've unfortunately lost several big names in music. Prince, David Bowie, and Maurice White of Earth, Wind and Fire, just to name a few. This is a challenge where we will challenge ourselves by selecting a song from the catalog of one of these great artists and attempting to sing it ourselves.

The only requirement for this challenge is that the song must be by somebody who passed away in 2016.

As far as time limits for this one goes, I was thinking about 45 days but suggestions are welcome.

  8. Opened a topic to discuss the next challenge. The consensus seemed to be most wanted either the Nationals Challenge (Songs about your country or places within your country) or the Late Legends Challenge (Tribute challenge to some of the late greats we lost in 2016, ex. Prince, David Bowie and others, by choosing a song from on of these artists catalogs)

Let's vote for 3 days and get going!

A town/city/country based song sounds pretty cool. Ex. Philidelphia Freedom, Sweet Home Alabama, New York New York, Kansas City Here I come...............................Got a wife and kids in Baltimore Jack (closest big city to me)............

Yeah, so many choices there. Would allow us to hear some interesting stuff.

With all the legendary singers passing recently - Prince, David Bowie, Merle Haggard, etc - everyone choosing a song to memorialize one of them would be appropriate, I think.

Like a Late Legends 2016 challenge? I like that.

  10. At this point, we've done several genre-based challenges, where we voted on a genre, then voted on a song from that genre. We've also started doing non-genre-based themed challenges, like the Lover's Challenge from December, wherein any song involving love could be selected, and the more recent Artist challenge, where we voted on an artist and selected any song in that artist's catalog.

Where does everybody want to go next? I've been thinking for a while about doing a National Challenge, where we choose songs about our country or places within our country. I think I introduced that idea back in November, and with Memorial Day coming up in the states, I was reminded.
