Defying Gravity - WICKED Male Cover

So I've been into music for pretty much my entire life, but I've more recently been trying to focus on singing. I did a little bit of choir and musical theater back in my youth, but I still feel like a real newbie when it comes to singing, since I never had formal voice training. If anyone has any tips they can offer for basic exercises I should be doing or whatever you think I should be working to improve, I'd greatly appreciate it!

You can hear a recent sample of my singing here:

Well done. Yeah, the recording and mix was really good. But only as it highlights good singing. And your singing was good and a good mix that basically gets out of the way of a good performance.

Thank you! I have an acquaintance, Andre Pascher (a.k.a. Shady), to thank for that wonderful mixing job. I'm still very much a newbie at mastering as well, so I don't have the finesse that he has with it. He's a PHENOMENAL singer, too (seriously--listen to this duet he sings here:

).

I've been a fan of his stuff for over a year now, but I had never felt brave enough to approach him. When I posted my cover of "Defying Gravity" online, though, he happened to stumble across it, then contacted me out of the blue complimenting my singing voice and asking if I'd want to sing a duet with him. So, yeah...basically, I got asked by one of my idols if I wanted to work with him, which as you may well imagine had my jaw on the FLOOR.

Anyway, that invitation boosted my self-confidence quite a bit (which before had been appallingly low), and I'm trying to improve myself now. I've managed to get in on a few other projects with people I really admire and respect, and I've always dreamt of making a living as a vocalist (both singing and voice acting), so I'm going around trying to get a feel for what I should be doing to help make that happen.

I also liked it alot, Why dont you try something thats not a girlsong? Like Falcon in the diive or something other like chess anthem? Those two would suit your voice i think

Good work

Yeah, I've covered (and plan to continue covering in the future) songs for male voices. This one cover is simply the best one I've done to date, and its lyrics hold a good deal of personal meaning to me.

Jens statement reminded of what a judge said on one of these televised singing talent shows. A guy came out wearing some kind of designer jeans.

The judge said, "Nice pants. Where did you get those?"

The singer said the name of some store, like The Gap, or something similar.

The judge replied, "Cool. Do they have them in men's pants?"

Ouch. Sometimes, you just got to roll with the flow. On the other hand, maybe the reason I don't post a Heart cover is because I am afraid of people hearing just how close to Anne Wilson I can get.

I get your point ronws. But to me it's more about the key of the song, alot of the intensity is lost if you take the song down in key.

Thats Why i suggested songs that are written for the range he sings in.

Well, to be fair, I only modulated the song one whole step up from its original key (from Db to Eb), and I did that so that the higher notes would push a bit more at the upper end of my range, which would help preserve some of the musical intensity.

Other than singing songs written for my range, what tips would you have for improving my intensity beyond what I'm already doing? (I honestly though I had a lot of intensity in my performance there.)

Your Talking this wrong :) it though the performance was good. All Im saying is songs that are written highup in girlskey have diffrent intervalls between the notes than if you would write a song for a male.

Then ronws came in and tired to add some gender issue, wich was. NOT what i meant. My point was basicly i think the buildups in songs like Falcon in the dive/ chess - anthem would make your voice even more impressive.

Cheers
