  1. Hey all. I would like to know what do you feel about my voice, how do you hear it. I've been recovering from a serious reflux and my voice doesn't feel scratchy anymore, although it still feels a bit stiff. If I don't sing correctly it sounds muffled and air leaks too much. Here is a playlist with recent practices, different days. Some days my voice feels lighter ( Don't stop believing ) and others a bit more meaty ( New Millenium, Take away my pain ) A good thing is that my voice now is getting consistent. 2 months ago, if I sang one day, I would have to stop for a week because my voice just wouldn't work. Now it feels a lot better and I can sing almost everyday, though not more than half an hour because it starts to dehydrate. Thanks for any input!!!
  2. Thanks, Bono! It's really important to me that it actually sounds healthy, haha.
  3. Thanks Gnee! Well, that is nice to hear haha. I have recent recordings in better shape, but I wanted to test out how do you hear the "worse". I'll keep working on my recovery
  4. Hey all. I've been absent for a while because on new years eve I had a severe case of gastroenteritis, or however it is called in english. It came with a nasty, very nasty reflux, which affected my voice drastically, and now I've been recovering from it. Progress has been slow, but steady. For a couple of months my mid range was completely gone, with only air leak, and in some good days some muffled notes could be sang. I was told by a singer/teacher friend that if the sound was bright and ringy it should be okay to sing, and I listened to him. Well, today I was practicing and exploring my "new voice" as usual and I felt my headvoice quite well so I decided to try some stuff. Don't Stop Believing bit: ( not compressed or processed, I only removed noise. ) https://app.box.com/s/p8h39zxps2zjvmoj16zqu7b4zre19dz8 I am well aware of some off pitch places and that the ending was crap haha, but I was quite tired and I didn't want to force that cool high. (I hit a plate while singing, that's the weird noise, haha, I left it because I thought it was funny ) I was hoping if fellow singers and teachers could tell me what do they hear, how do they hear my voice, if I should take certain precautions I am not aware of, or if someone has had a case like me before I would greeeatly appreciate any input. Thank you very much guys
  5. I liked your voice a lot! Very good sense of pitch and I like your tone. As the others said, your voice lacks the power of the original interpretation, and this by itself is not bad, it's just a choice, but personally I like this song that way. Now in the technical side, you tend to hammer the ending of phrases too much. Most of the phrases that end in a vowel you hammer them down ( siren downwards in pitch, men tend to do it more often than women I think ) and you distort the vowel to an EH. Like "Meeee-eh". It CAN be used as a stylistic resource, but you do it so much and so often that it can become annoying to the listener.
  6. Thanks, bono! I really don't quite consider my range amazing for now, haha, although I am amazed myself with the progress I've had. I started singing seriously one year ago in November, with very poor compression. But just like you noticed, I seem to have a somewhat natural ability to navigate through my whole range ( probably because of all the time that I sung breathy, as I think that smoothed my bridging coordination, or something ). I greeaatly appreciate your opinion, it has reinforced the feeling of progress that I currently have. It's so nice to know that other people find your singing good In a genuine way haha This is a new feeling to me And Ron, when I got more time, I will try and send slstone an email to see what happens. It would be awesome if I can get a little help My sister just sings, so we are both kind of in the same situation haha. Also, it is sooo cool that you noticed that I follow Carl's singing, haha. I really admire him and I feel everything he does is spot on. His interpretation is epic. Thanks again, guys, for your input. Not many people comment on my stuff, IF they even do, haha, so it's pretty important to me. Take care all of you :)
  7. Thank you very much Owen! That's very important to me I'm looking for a good backing track of this song :P
  8. Hey I recorded this the other day, along with the other 2 Judas' excerpts I made quite a few mistakes. I cut out a part at the end because I just messed up badly hahah, and at the start in "than the things you SAY", in that SAY, I wanted to go for a Overdrive sound, but I didn't onset well, so I changed to a Curbing sound after the H not to fall apart. In general I found it quite well for being my official first try haha Please leave some input, I would greatly appreciate it.
  9. Hahaha Nah. You and Phil are right, modifying the vowel slightly more towards AH will open it up more and will give it more "chest". Thanks guys for your input :)
  10. What word? The one at "They matter more than your feet and ...." , because actually it is "Hair". "Feet and hair" haha That's why the EH Thanks for writing, ron I really appreciate it.
  11. There are slight pitch issues in some parts. I am finally getting out of an annoying cold/allergy, so the voice doesn't respond always as desired haha
  12. I was practicing these the other day. I'm currently working on giving more and more chest quality to the highs. I know it should be a lot chestier compared to Carl Anderson, haha. It's a playlist of two tracks. Pretty short. Please listen to both. Thanks in advance for any input :D
  13. Ok, now I've listened to Metropolis and I heard more of what I think could be your main issues What will help you a lot I think, is to be more consistent with your vowels and your timing. I listen that there are a lot of high parts, with folds adducted and then followed by a lower note, in your mid-range lacking compression or even with some air leaking. To correct this make sure to do your scales maintaining the amount of fold adduction in each note. Be it a scale or a siren, be sure to keep that hold constant, and not release until you finish the phrase. You may feel that there is no time to breathe in between phrases in there, but there is actually plenty of time! You just need to really plan where you're gonna inhale, and make it short and quick. I'm not a coach or anything, but if you'd like you can add me on Skype and I can help you out Look for me as Gorehax
  14. Good one, mate I've only listened to Surrounded at the moment. I think you have the vocal level to make it sound good. What you need to improve on is the timing. It is very precise and also it is what gives the groove of the song. It is kind of funky in a way, listen more to the bass in the original tack The backing track was weird in the first part of the song :S So try to get another one(?). I don't know what the issue was in there.. You played the track before you started recording? I'll listen to the other tracks later :D
  15. Hey all! I love to sing Karnivool songs a capella because I love to train my tempo keeping. I was kind of off at the start but the I got it right, haha. Anyway, the important thing here is technique. I have no problems in this song whatsoever, except for the parts in falsetto, which are the hardest to me. I can't do light, low volume headvoice with solid adduction. Haha After the loud parts, doing those light ones makes me lose control considerably, and I have a hard time with pitch. Why? Is it because it is a more delicate coordination and the muscles are spinning 1000 rpm? For the ones that like this kind of music or have heard the original, do you think my voice fits the style? Thanks in advance to anyone who replies :P
  16. Aah! Thank you very much, Sange ( I don't know how to call you, haha) I thought I would receive a mail notifying any received messages. Now also thanks to you I found that I have quite a lot of unopened messages in my inbox, lmao.
  17. That one chestier I referred to was the first thing sung in the second audio of the playlist. When I say "Crown". It sounds pretty whiny. I can get there and it is very easy to do if I try to balance it between mouth and nasal resonance, more towards nasality. If I did what I feel is the very shouty variation, which is almost pure mouth resonance that is when I say it sounds pretty loud and is more tiresome. I will try for two weeks to exercise the mouthy, more open variation to see what happens.
  18. There is a very bright and whiny B4 in pure chest in there, which is the highest I can go for now with that kind of weight. Also I am not doing it in a very Overdrive way, because it would sound VERY shouty and loud as hell, and also it makes my voice tire really fast. The other B4 I do in "Im running out of STREEEGTH", that one is a mix, and you can clearly hear the difference. :P
  19. Well, yeah... some people percieve it like that because I think my voice is naturally airy ( which I don't like :/ ). If I don't have full chest adduction it sounds heady in a weird way, quality that can be mistaken for falsetto. I think that between D-E5 it sounds falsetto-ish, but it is not un-adducted folds. My register between B4 and C5 sounds heady most of the time, because I have not built the strength yet, but I think it sounds cool up to A4 Not cool or chesty enough for what I eventually want to sing, but the road is long and I've got plenty of technique to build yet haha Is there anyone else here with a voice similar to mine? Like, mellow and twangy with adduction issues? lol Some thoughts/questions: -Also, I read a long time ago here that twang has an effect in voices that have some kind of leaked air. The effect would be like a turbulence, a change in frequencies and noise, and physics stuff that I don't understand. I read this in a post discussing Sananda Matreiya's voice. -Can this be happening also in my voice? Even in my lower and mid register I don't feel it sounds like other voices in terms of chestiness due to this "airy noise". ( In the low notes I do after the runs or whatever, the level of adduction is like the most I can do. If I pushed more it would start to stratch and hurt. ) ^ Just ideas and questions to help me understand my voice better. No matter the answers I get I will keep working daily to be as chesty as I can get, becuase that's what I want. Also to the people that says, get a teacher and whatever, I already have one. :)
  20. Hey all! Long time no see I've been working a lot lately, guys And just wanted to make a post to show the current state of my voice. I've improved lots since I started one year ago. I am aware of the cracks and stuff that happen here and there, but I was just messing around doing whatever da voice wanted. ( Please don't mind the out of context and dumb lyrics hhahah ) Please take a listen n.n
  21. Man, I am so happy that your band is getting more exposure. I hope your album sells a lot. I love your voice and your singing, it's just so unique! Reminds me of Jorn Lande, although you don't go for a "bluesy" feel, instead you go for a "demon" kind of voice, haha, I just love it. I hope there are more songs with more distortion or even growls. ( Would love to hear also how classic metal high screaming sounds in your voice! )
  22. Java, it sounds to me that what you think is vibrato is in fact a shaky phonation. Probably made on purpose to FIND vibrato, but you always do it in more breathy/whispered words. Practice doing a loud EH in C4, not breathy, and imitate ol' granpas kind of vibrato.
