TMV World Legacy Member Keith Posted April 24, 2012 TMV World Legacy Member Share Posted April 24, 2012 Ok, god where do I even begin.. I finally found a cover of this song without vocals and decided (in my infinite wisdom) to learn it. Clearly, it is a really difficult song - at least for me- I am still struggling with quacking in my head voice, I am still struggling with powerful bridges (but getting better), and I get real tired singing stuff like this. I hope I get some constructive advise on my appraoch to learning this one. I will say this, I could not sing a lot of these notes before I started Roberts programl - The Parthenon was not built overnight... Please be gentle lol www.drop-head.com

TMV World Legacy Member Guest Posted April 24, 2012 TMV World Legacy Member Share Posted April 24, 2012 I'm at work with the single (and broken) speaker so I can't get a good listen. Plus it's loud here (the TV is blasting:D) so it's hard to hear. I had my ear on the speaker. I'm not familiar with the song, or the band, but damn boy, those high notes are sounding good! I'll have to listen when I get home tonight. I couldn't begin to offer any advice or tips. I should be asking you! But from what I head it sounded real good. I gave it a second listen because first time around I thought you sounded a little unsure or not like you owned the song at the beginning. But I wasn't sure of that on the second listen. it might just be my bad listening device. Real nice Kieth.
TMV World Legacy Member Keith Posted April 24, 2012 Author TMV World Legacy Member Share Posted April 24, 2012 Quack quack quack lol. I am embarrassed to have posted this lol. So many off pitch notes LOL - Well, at least I can laugh at it :) www.drop-head.com
TMV World Legacy Member Guest Posted April 24, 2012 TMV World Legacy Member Share Posted April 24, 2012 Nothing to be embarrassed about, it's how we learn. How the hell do you think I feel when I post stuff? I'll give a better listen when I get home tonight. I heard a couple of pitch spots, mostly in areas of modulation and on some high notes. But you said you are new to the song so... I thought the elements were there, you made the notes and your voice sounded good. I don't know what quack is...lol
TMV World Legacy Member ronws Posted April 25, 2012 TMV World Legacy Member Share Posted April 25, 2012 When did Geoff start singing with DT? You've got a lot more focus and solidarity in your high notes. It's less falsetto and more full. You've got some notes in there that cut through like a laser. And you've travelled such a long way in a short amount of time, thanks to your work ethic. Whether you go to court and lay waste to opposing counsel or get on the next Ozzfest, it will be nothing short of spectacular. I'm hoping for the latter. As for your technical issues, I'm not one to talk. The only pointer I have to give, which has nothing to with any song in particular, is always let the note live in your head. I like the Corey Taylor stance in the pic (at least from his Slipknot days.)
TMV World Legacy Member Keith Posted April 25, 2012 Author TMV World Legacy Member Share Posted April 25, 2012 Thanks Ron . That pic is from a show I played at a small bar. We are playing there again Saturday last week we played a show out of town (for the first time) and some of the people there said I sounded like a Geoff Tate/James labrie hybrid lol . www.drop-head.com
TMV World Legacy Member ronws Posted April 25, 2012 TMV World Legacy Member Share Posted April 25, 2012 Then this shall be your key song, then. DT song with a Tate-ish sound and a Labrie sense of phrasing.
TMV World Legacy Member Keith Posted April 25, 2012 Author TMV World Legacy Member Share Posted April 25, 2012 One thing that bugs me about my voice in this song (the higher parts) is that it lacks something. It's thin tone annoys me. I am about pressing my tongue through the floor of my mouth on some of these notes, but I can feel the space in my throat get smaller as I ascend. Its like the back of my tongue raises and cuts off the tone. ( I have a long tongue) and if I stick my tongue out like some do, I feel like I'm gonna gag. Then I choke off the note . Any thoughts? www.drop-head.com

Moderator & Review Specialist VideoHere Posted April 25, 2012 Moderator & Review Specialist Share Posted April 25, 2012 keith, if i may make a few suggestions that have helped me with these kinds on notes? first, be very aware of not allowing the larynx to get too high or the tongue too tense. and here's one i am having a lot of success with.... these high a4 and up notes watch and see if you can't "think" a vowel shade of "uh" into a lot of the vowels. this "uh" mentality has really helped me release into a more deeper yet easier, very resonant tone up high. it's hard to explain, and i do not know this song, but an underlying "uh" shade really helps a lot. in fact, "oo" is another. something about the "uh" vowel shade used with a relaxed throat. just trying to help. TMV World Legacy Member slstone Posted April 28, 2012 TMV World Legacy Member Share Posted April 28, 2012 Sad news is that Roy Khan left Kamelot about a year ago. I am very curious as to who they chose as his replacement. They are being very hush hush about it, kind of like Nightwish did when they hired Annette. Don't know if Fabio Leone has the time to split between them and Mighty Rhapsody. One thing I can say for certain. They did not choose me, lol. I did send an audition package.
