Been lurking around for a while, and since I finally purchased my own recording equipment I decided to join in and get some much needed feedback I recorded this yesterday to test my new microphone (Rode M3) I've been singing for over a year in a band (we haven't got out of the rehearsal space yet), but only started actual practicing and learning technique 1,5 month ago, and so far I've been enjoying it and it's really helping me. https://soundcloud.com/pistolhead/immigrant-song-cover The cover is far from perfect, but any feedback to help me is welcome! It's always a bit hard to judge yourself 'cause you need to get used to hearing your own recorded voice. What I think myself though, is that I sound a bit too strained on some high parts, and quite nasal, which I need to work on Hope this post wasn't TLDR! Cheers! Thank you! Really appreciate the feedback! It's always a bit hard to me to hear myself recorded (I feel like I have a bit of a weird voicetone), so a compliment is always welcome haha Still I can't believe there is nothing that has to be improved hehe, anyone else that has some advice for me? What mic were you using? You got strong prescence in your voice. Everything was on pitch that I heard. The end where you are vocally just trying to pound home some energy was fun to listen to you. You clearly got range. I think we probably use the method of singing. Maybe just going back to the song and picking out better ways to attack certain parts. But who cares if I was to hear this live I would hug you. It's not the banshee wails at the beginning and after the first chorus. It the high part at the end because it has articulated lyrics. And you did them well. I could understand what you were singing. Honestly though, I didn't use any falsetto in this song, everything is pure head voice. Normally I wouldn't be able (or atleast think) to hit the chorus in only headvoice, but after a few takes, it started to go really well (shows me that even though after warming up with lip rolls etc, it still takes half an hour of real singing to really get into it). The mic I used was a Rode M3 that I bought a few days ago. I was looking for a mic that could handle different things well (vocals, el. guitar cabinets, and ac. guitar), and after a week of looking into different mics I went back to my first choice, and I'm really happy with it. Actually, today I was recording and experimenting with this song again (it's such a big help to have good recording equipment), and improved a whole lot. I figured out the technique of the "wild smiley face" (as Jim Gillette would call it), and it made me sound alot better. I always found myself to sound a bit "mushy", like I had really big cheeks, but this totally made it go away, and gave me more "bite". Again, thank you everyone for the nice words so far. I really didn't expect it, and it's really good for my confidence as a singer. I still appreciate any form of feedback though! I figured out the technique of the "wild smiley face" (as Jim Gillette would call it), and it made me sound alot better. I always found myself to sound a bit "mushy", like I had really big cheeks, but this totally made it go away, and gave me more "bite". Nick I have not studied Gillette's stuff. For those who don't know, He sang in Nitro and is married to Lita Ford. But the smiley thing, I do that, too. It really brightens tones, may even align some formants. The inside muscles that you use to smile also lift and retract the soft palate, helping to create a small pocket where highter notes, which are of a shorter wavelength, have the right size resonating space to double themselves. It's just like a soda bottle with different levels of water in it. At a certain point, the high notes get the prominence. And I don't think you did falsetto. But there are some people who will think you did because they cannot do that note in "full voice," only in falsetto and assume that must be what you are doing. As if falsetto were a bad thing. And it's happened to me a few times. Where I was singing a clear, high note, but for whatever reason, someone thought it was falsetto.
