No, just honest. People pride themselves on being plainly honest. Brutal is how my friend Lee and I used to trade jabs at each other.

 

Lee, after a large lunch on a Friday as we go back to work, "I feel full and totally useless."

 

Me, "How do we tell the difference between now and before lunch?"

 

He was 17 years older than I was and I would hold the door open to a restaurant for him and say, "Age before beauty."

 

And he would say, "Pearls before swine."

 

I would sing along with the radio and he would say, "Who sings that?"

 

I would say, for example, "The Beatles."

 

He would say, "Well, let them sing it."

 

Now, that's brutal.
