I watched it several times this week and have yet to find anything to critique or help with. This is amazing!
The only thing I oculd offer constructive criticism on is your performance. I coached bands (signed and unsigned) across the world in their performance and career for many years. You lose yourself in the music quite often, which is absolutely perfect. When you lose yourself, you give the audience permission to do the same. Work on your actions following the lyrics rather than anticipating them. For instance, before you sang "It's the only thing that's in my mind", you pointed to your head and had already lowered your hand by the time you sang the line. The emotional impact from the visual can greatly enhance the performance when in sync. This can also be expressed by letting your entire body flow with the music. HOWEVER, I still felt the song, it didn't take away from it at all.

Nice effort. Keep going ... if you continue to work on this it will become great. Id give you a B.
One thing that blares to me is when you sing "arms". Your really pinching down on "arms". I suspect that is because your articulators are trying to negotiate the /r/ controlled vowel there "ar"... its a killer. Modify the vowel there. Open that up. Try adding more /uh/ to your "arms" ...

Thanks.. Steve Perry is by far the most difficult singer to emulate.  All his songs lie smack on the passagio. It is easy to imagine everything going terribly wrong if not sung with the most perfect technique. You cannot force his songs in a manner that you can do wth a lot of other singers.  He sings in a very high range with a light character with a lot of dynamics.  That is what makes his songs so difficult.  He is not monotonous in the high range.  That takes a lot more skill I suppose.  I guess this is where having a high tenor voice helps, since you can sing with less effort and still retain the weight.  I am not sure if I can support anymore than what I am doing currently.  Perhaps another two years and maybe it will sound better indeed!

Hi, I thought you did a really nice job on a singer that very few are brave enough to tackle lol. I thought overall you did good work negotiating the passagio danger notes. That is always the trick with Steve Perry Vocals the man lived in the Passagio for most male singers haha. Always hard to slip in and out of those areas. I would suggest keep working on it. You seem to be hitting the notes fine and the pitch is there. The tone could be just a bit more supported I believe and it would help you sound a little more like Perry. That being said the lighter sounds can be used to show the vulnerability of the songs lyric. A great job on a super hard singer and like you Perry is a tough singer for me because of his timber and tone are difficult for me to nail.

    Hi Folks,
This is a song that I have wanted to sing for a very long time.  This is as you all know, an incredibly difficult song on the passagio.  I don't think I sound anything like Steve, so it makes it way more difficult for me. It is a bit of a Mount Everest for me this song
This is a work in progress version. There are some pitching issues, please ignore.  I am curious to hear what you think about my tone in the chorus
Thanks to anyone who can drop in a few words

    Alex
I am reviewing the first one, the G&R tune.
    - Your singing in falsetto for the most part.
You need to build strength in your voice with training. Which can be a big discussion, the best thing you can do to move forward is get on the phone with me and I'll give you a very honest feedback on what is going on here.
Frankly, it doesn't sound like your doing any training, are you?
How long have you been a musician? The musicianship needs a lot of work.
It is not that great Alex, I'll just be honest with you, but I can help you.

Schedule a clarity call with me, it is $1/min. and i will make a recommendation for you on what you can do. You have a lot of work ahead of you. You can learn to sing great, that much I am convinced, but what you are demonstrating here is a LOT of lack of strength, coordination, motor skills, and musicianship. You need to get serious about singing and being a musician if you really want to do it.
What have you been doing to commit to becoming a musician and a singer, other then making recordings like this? What real study and training have you been doing?

Hi, so  just recorded this clip (No rain)(sorry for the quality, im traveling right now) but I want to know if im using the right technique, and if this is any closer to a good mix voice. Of course, a lot of things to work on regarding the song, but I'd like to know if im on the right track and what should I improve or work on for those high notes. At the end of the clip I also did a small comparison between a very nasal tone and a cleaner tone. Im not sure if this nasal tone is the right way (+ diaphram compression) to get a good distortion for heavier songs?  Finally i also attached another clip (Paradise city) which is basically me playing around with this nasal tone quality to see if i get a good result.
Thank you very much! cant wait to be singing these songs live:D

    Hi Gilly!
I think you get off to a strong start on this more or less... providing insight to what you could do with this. Stronger up to :29.
    Very interesting... however,
At :30 you let go of your compression and what TA strength is still there and it leans into the falsetto spectrum.
I think this is a very good opportunity for you to do some A/B testing here. Listen to the color, attack, strength and confidence up to :29. Then notice how that all weakens at :30. Can you fix that by just having it pointed out to you?
Put another smule in here of the same song and pay attention to your support... musculature support; twang, TA "chest pulling/narrowing".. not respiration. I'll bet you can fix this easily if you just pay more attention to what your doing and someone such as I points it out to you.
    PS:
Can you please embed the iframe code from your smule so that it is embedded into your post here and plays here, instead of tossing people out to smule. Not a big deal, but its more cool that way.

    Gill,
    - You need to more musculature behind your singing as a general statement. This IS a falsetto mode you are singing in. It makes the voice sound weak and has a lot of instability to the configuration, which is why falsetto tends to "chirp" and "squirrel" around.
    How do you fix it?
    - Standard good training that would include building the strength and motor skills to twang, in particular above your bridge.
    - Train the TVS onsets, Dampen & Release & Attack & Release to build stronger compression / vocalis strength. This will help give you the twang and stability.
    - When you are amplifying your voice with real sound energy, not wind, you will then need to guide/direct that energy to proper resonance. Therefore, you need to understand the fundamentals about singing vowels, modification of those vowels and build enough association on how they feel through kinesthetics to also, build masterly acoustics in your singing. In your TVS system that I gave you.

In The Four Pillars of Singing you have to TRAIN! ...
    - Onset Lectures
    - Training Onsets
    - Acoustic Modes
    - Training Integrated Training Routines
    - ... and then apply your new strength and motor skills to singing songs, including this one.

You have to build a voice... the apply it to songs and workout the details.
