  1. Of the two sound choices, I, as a personal choice, liked the Halford more. Though both were good.

I'm not sure if I have understood Jens correctly and if I am wrong in interpretation, that's cool. It seems like he was saying, don't worry so much about whether you are using the same "technique" as the singers. Think more of how does the voice of Enander make these similar sounds.

For example, you might hear a singer and think he is extending chest, whether he really is or not. Because that's how it sounds to you and how you imagine it to be. Perception can be deceiving.

Case in point, one of my recordings of me covering "Heaven and Hell," I do a high note that someone appreciated as a great rock "scream." And here's the reality. I was still in recovery from self-induced partial laryngitis and probably should not have been singing but I have to learn things the hard way. Anyway, my fine control was absent and I still had some inflammation. So, I was keeping my throat as open and relaxed as possible. So, it was me doing an E5 with some errant vibrations that we hear as "noise" or "rasp." A result of damage, thankfully temporary. My reply was, "with any luck and better sense, I will NOT be able to do that, again." It was not a "scream," it was me singing with less than perfect conditions that brought a result liked by at least one other person.

So, what does that mean? That means you can create a similar sound, even if you don't do the exact same thing the original singer did. What you or others hear is a sound. Listening is mental. And that you might be able to have the "chest" sound you prefer but it may involve not "thinking chesty."

    Maybe?

Hehe well yes and no, his voice is just great and he is using the same sounds and techniques and the stars. I will always encourage people to mimic or copy singers if there is a certain style or sound they want.

I see all the time people having some sort of fear for mimicing i dunno why? People who are good at mimicing are usually alot better singers than the one's that are not

  2. Well as both an good singer and a metalfan ive gotta say your heavy mix and rockfalsetto are top notch. your weakness doesnt lie in these two coordinations. What i mean and wanted to point out is not you copying jorns or kellys technique but rather try to make the same choices :P

technique is not your weakpart, i see it more like:

Imagine you had this very fast formula 1 car, now your giving the keys to a guy who just got his driverslicense.

Thats how you drive your voice, more like " I wonder how fast this car can go today, wow still that fast!now il drive this fast all the time".

What you need to do is learn to handle the car like a proffesional racingdriver, it will still be the same car but still o so diffrent.

Im not blaming you, im giving you these tips because im just like you in that regard, just look some vids in my youtube channel and youl see lol

I know it's hard holding back when you know you can hit that note alittle higher or alittle more powerfull :)

  4. I listened to it again. And I don't like it, either. I am pulling a "Felipe" on myself.

So, the next progression is to record again, of course. Then sit on it a few days. I already did 4 takes to get this track. I like the song, but it's not in my normal set list. I have always wanted to do the song.

To answer Owen, I have already emailed Jens, in so many words, explaining my schedule. I have not heard back what is the best time I could contact him. I live in Texas, central daylight savings time. As I write this very post, it is 7:21 pm, two towns south of the Red River, about 60 miles north of Dallas.

Jens lives in Sweden, the other side of the world, practically. And my workdays average about 13 hours. And I still have to set up skype, if my old computer will handle it. And then, I would only have time to really converse with him on the weekends, most likely Saturday. He could also be very busy and just not have the time when I have the time.

At the very least, if I can make a cleaner track, I will probably email it to MDEW, since it meant so much to him.

Hey bro ive just been super busy this week(14hour days lol), just download skype, if your computer can handle recording skype wont be a problem. :)

Il respond to your email this weekend when my workload is less

  5. Jens, stop being an idiot. It's a place for critique. It doesn't matter what anyone else sounded like when they were 14... The forum topic isn't " Powder my arse and boost my ego "... It's Review and Critique... They (including me) reviewed and Critiqued. You give good advice at times, but usually find a way to make yourself annoying and non-topical. Grow up and stay focused!

Well I honestly cant help it mate, I just wish people could be abit nicer and focus more on whats good and not whats bad. If that makes me an idiot than so be it im an idiot then.

I belive we grow from our strenghts, and also singing should be fun and exploring and supportive. People are no babies.

  6. Guitargeorge, it's funny, I didn't find it that hard either. Although one thing is you stuck primarily to Rob's 2nd version which had lower melodies. But still. The hard part, in my experience, is not merely doing it, it's an easy song to get through. The hard part is making it sound kickass. So my first stab at it didn't really feel "hard" per se, to me.

Not that hard?! Ive recorded like 300+ songs in the studio im used to workng fast as hell(me and marcus usually records a full song instruments and everything+vocals and mix in an night) did only have a few hours aswell.

After 1,5 hour i was done "haha nailed it i thought" when i listened back every line had some sort of tempo issue lol. Though i managed to spot most of em :)

The hard part is staying powerfull(this song just feeds of power) while trying to get the right feel, and continuing to keep that power and feel in tempo over the 2+ octave rangespan thats needed to sing this :P.

Btw i heard you version reminds me alot of luntes style cool ;)

  7. Man just give it some confidence, your body is all over the place you stroll along not having your body with you. It would not have mattered if you sang it 100% correct, cause the confidence and body is not there and i directly reflects on your performance.

Can you try doing the same thing again with tons of confidence, get into a character, something very distant from yourself.

Try adding the standard hardrockerssupport(squeezing your armpits) to give extra energy when you feel it's needed. Focus on the camera and dont drift away, let the body feed the energy to the singing. Try this and see what happens, sonetimes just a change of attitude and approach can change a performance :)

  8. @jens haha tnx man! Naked is more sexy :P. Kidding, I do get what you are saying, and I think it could be done, but I also think this was more honest to what I can do currently. Gonna take a listen to your version too man, missed it, saw it on the TVS thread.

@ronws last post, I did feel it fits the context well, not so sure I would change it if I could do what Jens propose.

Thanks all, and thanks Rob once more :)

Nice gimme some comments on what you think, it was recorded very fast and i just let the song decide what would happen i usually dont sing tha heavy or distorted.

Ofc you could pull off getting abit more edgy/distorted your voice is already there, wouldnt be hard on your voice either if you play around with some unorthodox tongueplacements ;)

Then on the other had thats just a stylistic choice i would like, wich is just because of taste it sounds good as it is.

It makes me wonderhow this would sound if you approached it as you record a proffesional recording and not sing it in a two take :)

  9. Really cool! Ive never thought of it beforebut your timbre is very similar to Robs even if you use the voice diffrently :)

I think it was spoton however i would have liked if some of the highnotes would have had more edge or some distortion, coupled with that powervibrato. Think that would have been the icing on the cake, now they sound alittle naked compared to your powerfull middle

    Cheers

  10. Man it is kinda raw... Does not sound bad, but the interpretation isnt comming... I think it can be much better.

I hear it compressed back, allow it to flow more forward thinking of support, thinking of colour, open a bit more. The closed vowels are destroying the placement, I think some attention to them outside the song, "more twang" into them if you will.

And more importantly, dynamics, you are bringing it too strong from the start! When you reach "take my hand" you dont have room to go stronger and its becomming compressed. Just keep it forward and round, dont think so much on making it stay full, your voice is already strong and trainned, the resonance will take care of it.

Anyways this dude is one of the most amazing singers ever, the song is complicated as hell.

Great tips man! Thx for the kind words, It would be really nice if you could post a fast clip of the placement and twanged setup for the closed vowels. Il follow your tip and see where it leads me :)

I also agree with the dynamics, it's hard man :)

Also keep in mind there's a vocalcompressor on the song so any increases in volume wont be heard, but im guessing youve already taken that into consideration ;) still need to vary My coloration...

    Cheers

  11. Okay this past year ive been working in My belted sound alot, à year ago i wouldnt be able to touch this song.

So it's a work in progress :) im lucky enough to know à guitarist who can play this aswell wich isnt easy to find.

So what can i do better?

Im right now working on being able to sing with less compression

Also got tips that some of the second verse felt stressed, so if you feel you can contribute to those tips pleases do :)

Edit: also big thanks to marcus for the great mix, your a rock ;)

  12. Daniel thanks! hahaha. Let me see if I understand you, take for example the phrase, "Highway Run, Into the midnight sun". What would be the more honest and true vowel for "mid

I agree with Daniel the singing and technique is top notch! What would make this even better is being abit more vunerable, or pretending like you sang this to some specific person.

But this is really picking at details, i mean everything is spot on textbook example
