  1. Sounds good man, just out of sheer curiosity...any way you could re-record using same " vocal coordination" but singing through clenched teeth? a lot of Brian's distinct sound comes from the way he colors it with clenched and bared teeth.
  2. Qdog, based on the recordings I see no reason why you can't be a singer for a band right now. Your emulations are pretty spot on. I heard some tuning issues...but actually believe it has to do with the "emulation" and NOT your pitch(i.e. you're singing through the nose and it eats up the higher harmonics thus making you sound flat...when in fact your on pitch.) This is most evident on the Aaron Lewis/Staind stuff which to me, can't stand listening to him most of the time because of this very issue(singing through the nose.) Mind you, if you twang your ass off you can create a "nasal twang" which sounds fine, but that's another discussion entirely! Good job man.
  3. Yep. That coordination loves the top of the voice...not so much the lower. You really have to map out what you're gonna do before hand when going down(at least I do.) This is also where you can"lean on" the sound equip to do the work for you. Alternatively, of course...you can really throttle it in a heavier coordination and it sounds pretty damn cool too :)
  4. Sounds spot on bother! The hardest part for me is blending that twanged falsetto down into upper mid range w/out very obvious shift. Cheers.
  5. Freddie, I would second Martin's opinion here...both versions(Steve and Arnell) are very "over-drivish" on the money notes. You need that metal to make the sound convincing on Journey tunes. Would be cool to hear you blend that last version you did with Overdrive(on the vowels Martin suggested. ) Wish you still had your old band linked. I bet people on here would be blown away by it :)
  6. Yes I believe so...just different terms. No offense at all I've never sung that song before was just trying to capture the intensity that Bono uses. What I'm doing there is in a "gray" area...but you could make it MORE yell like and actually be in the center of what CVT calls Overdrive. 100% healthy and possible up to Male High C. Sure...twang more and sing lighter if you want. What I'm finding is that this whole business of singing is actually WAY MORE COMPLICATED than anyone wants to admit. Sure you can learn the basic recipe...but Jesus...there are about 1000 variations on that recipe. The good news is, once you get familiar with the "basics," you can really experiment to find "your voice." Glad it helped...although I need to be taking tips from you Crazy pipes man!
  7. Don, classic pipes brother! Would love to hear more Soul/Motown. You obviously own that sound.
  8. Sure...why not? For your first time singing in public and being nervous and playing guitar and singing a hard song...IMO you smoked it. I thought your delivery/interpretation was dead on. Great job again!
  9. Fahim, killer job on your first performance(vocal.) I think "To Be with You" is pretty tough vocally(but that's just me) and you sounded like smoked it(The sound quality could be better obviously.) Look forward to hearing some current songs now that you've been doing some voice work. Cheers.
  10. David, I would interpret "Review"(of Review and Critique) as an open examination of whatever is being offered. In no way would I assume that a critique is an absolute or even always necessary. I find it very pleasing to hear a vocalist tackle challenging material and succeed! Just my thought on this.
  11. Jonpall, sounded great man. The U2 is tough one. I think you're 90% there. I'm hearing some tension...let the twang and support work instead of VF. Really liked the AC/DC. You'll have to give me some pointers!
  12. Yeah...on the 14th. I clicked on the email link in your box(hides your actual address from me.) Damn.
  13. Great job man! Excellent "live" recordings. Those songs are gonna require you to let go of that "heavyness" in your voice. W/out going into CVT speak...I would just say you need to find that light twanged compressed spot in your upper range. BTW...Your quest is MY quest as I've added a lot of the old 80's rock stuff to my repertoire. I would suggest working w/ light twang everyday...trying to make it as effortless as possible. I do a lot of baby crying, duck quacking, general twang stuff...making it as effortless as possible. Really cry through the twang. There is a nice seemingly effortless spot you can find(I twanged for the longest time with too much weight and additional constriction.) Once you find that twang( something like this: http://www.box.net/shared/9uo29x5zf7 ) start adding lyrics to it. When you get comfortable with that...you can modify the sound a bit. This really helps when I go to do GNR stuff. NOTE: I am by no means a voice teacher or an expert(on anything really ) I recorded a clip for you describing what I'm talking about here. I really feel like it's been helpful(at least to me) to have feedback on these forums from people who are actually struggling with issues and have OVERCOME them(with help from instructors, own experimentation, what have you.) So with that in mind: http://www.box.net/shared/0ujed20y3r Obviously I'm not Bono and I'm using a hand held voice recorder...but you get the idea. The trick here is the light twang(w/ cry.) It has to stay effortless. Seriously has helped me singing in ALL MODES(CVT) and everything in-between(gray areas.) There are certainly other factors involved...but thanks to a great instructor...I am now twanging in an insanely efficient way. On a side note: I also think that if you can find this spot(light twang) you will find distortion in curbing will be much easier and being able to sing between Curbing and OD will be much easier. As Robert said in your other post- I know for a fact that you will be singing whatever the hell want in the near future and...no matter what...Don't forget that you ALREADY have an awesome voice! Tell yourself that about a hundred times a day brother. Cheers.
  14. Too funny man Should be the TMV forum song. Damn.
  15. Great sound man. Post up some other stuff(if you've got it.)
  16. Holy Sh*t Snax...I wanna party with you! Insane pipes. Now I'M confused...obviously a huge shift in style/genre here(metal to Tom,) but I'm NOT hearing a HUGE difference between your chest and head(compared to "other"singers.) Really great.
  17. Forrest, Agree with Josh. Tons of potential. Would definitely investigate support. In my opinion, most pitch problems(in your COMFORTABLE singing range) are really a matter of not supporting. Get some one on one help if you can afford it. On the flip side...don't OVER-fret about technique. I really like the rawness that you bring! Very emotive.
  18. Would agree with the nerves. Best remedy(for me) is a whole lotta live performance. I perform quite often on a weekly basis...and gotta say that I would almost KILL to have some nervousness/excitement before a gig(dry throat not included.) Unfortunately, it's just a job these days(sing in top 40/dance bands.) I have same problem w/ allergies...and find that mucinex works great for me. And of course...water.
  19. Wow...Both Sides Now really knocked me out! Gorgeous.
  20. Well...I'm a singer not a vocal instructor...but I dig it. Sounds "old school" to me(unfortunately I'm approaching the age(37) where f'n old school seems like yesterday..."In my day...they didn't have these fancy downloads...") Always nice to hear some cojones/depth to the vocals. You've got great connection and range. Also, I'm a closet wuss...so enjoyed the melodies. Only thing I had a problem with was the title. There's a band in my area called Blue October...they released an album not too long with same title. Best of luck to ya.
