Deep Purple - Highway star part1
napoleonboot replied to Quentin's topic in REVIEW YOUR SINGING - SHARE YOUR SINGING
Quentin OK, nice try, and not a bad quality recording either. Opening scream is fab, well done - it's way above my range. Your pronunciation of "Everything" seems to be a bit short changed/rushed. You should perhaps lighten up on some words, especially at the end of lines which are sound a bit over emphasised to me, such as "break the speed of SOUND", "get her to the END" The really high bits around 1'43 you aren't hitting the note pitches spot on, and are sort of sliding into them, which isn't quite right. Having said that - it's a jolly good effort! Ron - I don't see the multiple posts you referred to? I like the avatar. Now that you have made subject made expert, should I tug my forelock sir? -
"Money Maker" - original rock
napoleonboot replied to napoleonboot's topic in REVIEW YOUR SINGING - SHARE YOUR SINGING
Clint - thanks One benefit of writing and creating original songs, is that you can take them in a direction to suit your own voice, which is what I did here. Cheating maybe? I'm not totally happy with the vocals, I think I need to rework the high harmony bits, the occasional "Miley's little money maker", as there's something's not not quite right in there. Also we are waiting on real drums to be tracked - on this mix drums are programmed, although they sound ok. If you point me to one of your songs I'll see if I can add any words of wisdom ;) -

Hotel California - Eagles
napoleonboot replied to ronws's topic in REVIEW YOUR SINGING - SHARE YOUR SINGING
Sounding good. No real criticisms, except: 1. some timing issues in odd places 2. the mix is not great and so detracts a bit from the excellent work. If you do another then email me, and if I have time I could mix and master it for you. I'd love to do a male/female duet. There are two very different songs I have had in mind for the right opportunity: 1. "Anything You Can Do", from "Annie Get Your Gun". Here's a clip: 2. "Please Don't Touch" by Headgirl (Motörhead+Girlschool). Here's a clip: Any female singers here fancy either song? -
I haven't posted anything here for a while, and summer is dwindling.... so I revisited this song, which I first I did last year. Now remixed and remastered, with improved harmonies. All vocals, and mix, by me. I was particularly happy with the harmonies, especially around 2'20. I think I am 'crashing' some words at the end of lines. As usual, constructive criticism is welcome.

A good start, but you are too clean. It's difficult to sing like Lemmy, you need to get a lot of grit in the way you sing. Which is hard to do in a healthy way, without just belting and hurting your throat. I can do it now, but I didn't used to be able to. I've no idea how to explain the technique I use though. I just one day started to find a different way of doing of doing it. Mostly I think breathing from the diaphragm helps, and get tension out of your shoulders and throat. Anyhow, a while I back did a cover of this very song... This cover was created from the ground up. I did vocals, guitar, bass and mixing. Drums were done by a drummer I work with sometimes called Ian Burrage. I always wanted to follow up with a cover of "Please Don't Touch" by Headgirl (Motorhead + Girlschool), created in the same way. I haven't yet found a female vocalist to do it with yet. Any volunteers?:D

"The Scorpion" - Megadeth cover

Ron Thanks for listening and commenting. I found it fairly hard to get into the swing of this to be honest. I am planning some original heavy metal stuff soon. -
Original prog rock song: "Prophecy"
napoleonboot replied to napoleonboot's topic in REVIEW YOUR SINGING - SHARE YOUR SINGING
Many thanks for your comments Ron. I was happy that I managed to include a sort of R+B/blues style chorus into the vocals in a prog rock song! The tube (London undergound) picture is actually one I attached to different song I have on ReverbNation, but for some unkown reason it attaches itself to any other songs I have that don't have a specific image.. not nothing clever happening! (this one http://www.reverbnation.com/napoleonboot/song/16651544-you-havent-been-yourself) This song has a real human drummer on it, which makes a big difference to the feel. -
Megadeth cover "The Conjuring"

Thanks Ron. I did try to sing like Dave when I initially worked on this , but he's got a strange voice, so I quickly gave up on imitation. -

In fairness, I think it's fairly hard to do on guitar! We are working on a couple more Megadeth tracks. -

Thanks for listening and commenting. I didn't double track, but I worked fairly hard in the mix a bit to give it the necessary richness. Here's what I had on the intro vox (in order) * compressor (soft knee config) * valve pre-amp emulator (Crow VST plug-in) * chorus * flanger * echo, different delays in both channels, with EQ on the delays to cut out the bass. * reverb for the the main sung section I used the same set of effects without the flanger, and with less extreme settings on them all. George -
A cover created from scratch. All instruments by my friend Tony Rhodes, all vocals and mix by me. http://www.reverbnation.com/napoleonboot/song/21557248-the-conjuring It would seem that Dave Mustaine is yet another person I cant sing like... I still sound like me! As usual, constructive comment is welcome.

Gneetap - thanks for listening and commenting. I am am pretty happy with my lower and mid-range singing in this, especially grit and expression. I am also fairly happy with harmony vocals in choruses. I am much weaker on the long high notes in which Bruce does loads of vibrato, in the chorus in particular - more work needed. I have done a lot of Iron Maiden covers, I am much better at the DiAnno and Bayley numbers, than Dickinson. -

So... here's my take on "Run To The Hills". http://www.reverbnation.com/napoleonboot/song/21392264-run-to-the-hills This was created from from scratch: I did all vocals, and my friend Tony Rhodes did the instruments. -

Validar - Thanks for listening and commenting! yes it came out as a mish-mash of prog-rock styles, none of which was intentional, others have commented it's a bit Yes, ELP, Genesis But... Peter Gabriel, Rush, Marillion are all good! This is the first series of 3 songs we are working.
