  1.    I was finally able to get "The Four Pillars" and wanted to drop a few lines about it.

I have not been able to perform a Full Practice/Training session yet but just by learning and training the specialized onsets while driving and performing other tasks I have greatly improved.

In the lectures, Roberts enthusiasm for teaching and his desire for the students to make progress really shines through.

I have no doubt that "The Four Pillars of Singing" would be of benefit to any singer, whether Novice or Professional.

Thank you Robert for taking the time to put together a program that is thoughtful, knowledgeable and entertaining as well.

Great to hear, MDEW. I got mine a few weeks ago. Like you said in the post after this, I haven't had the chance just yet to do a good vocal workout with this yet, but it's started changing my thinking. Hoping to get involved with this forum.

That is great to hear also....Take the time to read the book and watch the lectures even if you have watched them before in a post on the forum. It can make a difference in understanding what we are supposed to do.

Also visit Roberts Youtube channel....There are some snippets of Roberts Master classes and you can see other beginners being corrected and guided to the correct forms.

  2.    Thank you Robert/Coach/Maestro.

It really is clear that your intention is to have your students succeed. It is not about showing that you can do something that others cannot. It is not "See how good I am". It is "See how good YOU can be".

I watched a few of your "Master Class" snippets as well and your reaction when a student gets a good onset or Siren is priceless. It is almost like you, yourself are achieving that goal for the first time and it is inspiring. A good coach or teacher is one who inspires others to learn, train and improve. You my friend inspire others. Keep up the good work.

  3.     So far I have just read the book, watched the lectures and tried a few of the onsets.... But just in doing that I have made progress and my confidence has increased.

I even surprised myself in my last sitdown with the guitar. I played a few songs that were just out of my reach and I can't say that I sang the notes perfectly but I did sing the right notes without being shaky and unsure.

  4.      I am excited to get down to business and really train but finding a place to get loud and obnoxious is hard to come by. But in my car I am a Vocal God.  :headbang:

There are a few things that are just hard to grasp when trying to figure it out on your own. Robert makes it pretty clear. You may even say things like "Why didn't I get that already"

even so it would be worth getting the program instead of spinning wheels and getting nowhere.

  6.    Good Job Felipe.

Gsoul and the rest, I am sorry that I could not get any loud time for this and still intend to record my attempt......If nothing else it would have been interesting......

Don't worry about it, Dew.  It's great to have as many people as possible get involved with this, but everyone knows that life can get busy at the drop of a hat, and suddenly the time isn't there. I managed to get an attempt off and tried to get a second version done, but the time wasn't there. I didn't manage to record anything with a backing track this time. I want that to be different this month, so I'm going to see if I can make that happen.

Speaking of this month, it would be great if you could be a part of it. We're running two challenges this month: Jazz and Country. And it would still be nice to have you post a Highway Star cover in here.

How about "Highway Star" as sung by Willie Nelson? No one has done that, yet.

Little bit of that Willie walking bass run on an acoustic guitar .....

I was thinking more on the lines of  George Thorogood distortion on the lower octave and change the words a little.

Nobody gonna take my Dew.....Gonna drink it till I die.

Nobody gonna get my Dew....Let me tell you why

Ooooh Its slimey and Green, All Caffene........ I love it!   I need it!    I feed it!

It's a wild ride ... All Right....Hold Tight......   I've got some in my Car...........

  7. Thanks to you both for the feedback. I really appreciate it. Youre right I do have a tendency to try to sound like the singer I'm covering. My teacher used to try to break that habit all the time.

Do you think you could tell me  how to work on support? And by placement do you mean phrasing or where I sing from? If the latter, how do I work on that?

    Thanks again.

I am no teacher, Just another singer......Some of the components for support is to breath deep into your belly(figure of speech) The idea is to expand the lower ribs. When someone surprises you and you take a quick breath because of being startled, that is the type of breath. Another part is to keep the lower ribs expanded.

Along with those is to have the kind of energy of scolding a child and not wanting to be loud enough to scare the child.....So you are being forceful but holding the air back at the same time.

Placement is kind of like where you sing from.

Sounding like the singer is not a bad thing. Either sounding like the singer or trying not to sound like the singer can both be bad.  When you sing with good placement and you SING LIKE the original singer you may not SOUND LIKE the original singer. Trying to SOUND like the original singer may move you OUT of good placement.

       Confused yet? :)

  8. Hi Mark, Welcome to the forum.

Sounds pretty good :). There is lots of potential there. No real problems with pitch. The only thing I noticed would have to do with support. Getting the sound to be a little more solid. The only reason that I am bringing this up is because you sound pretty good now but with a little effort you could sound awesome. Sometimes there is only a fine line between the two.

For Kentucky Rain GO AHEAD and try to Match Elvis's sound a little....The reason I say that is that you have a similar voice to his anyway and that lower larynx/dampened larynx sound that gives Elvis power helps to bring about the support. Just don't over do the mimicking, that can start to sound pretentious.

  9.     Elvis, your tone was good man, actually I rather liked it. Don't be using the defeatist approach. "I lack vocal range and my low notes end up wobbly".  Whether a song is High or Low there are always elements to work out. If you listen back to the song and notice that you are going off pitch a little, or something not sounding right, Go over that area of the song by itself for a while. One piece at a time.

Always do this for all songs. It is part of the process of learning a song. It is easier to screw up on easy songs because you do not pay attention to them.

When I recorded "All of Me"  I could not complete the song in one recording. I had to take each part by itself for a while. But now I know the song a lot better and can sing it from start to finish.  The ascetics may not be palatable to everyone but there are no Flips, chokes or wobbles either.

  10.      Beautiful Voice as always. :)   If you wanted to change this song into a sexy Ballad then you have accomplished that.B)  If you meant to ROCK OUT on it, then you need to add a little attitude and get rid of the breathiness. Yell a little and maybe even practice being mean.(I would hate to see that)

I myself, like the breathy sexy thing. ;)

  11. MDEW, now i got this song stuck in my head... last night i found myself humming... " We´we got to night...bla bla bla " .. that´s irritating :D

Well, If it is my voice that you are hearing ..... I feel sorry for you... If you are hearing Bob Seger or Kenny Rodgers then use it to your advantage somehow. ;)

  12.

I have found that you, MDEW, sound a number of different singers, depending on the song. Times where. You sounded very much like the original on "Sister Goldenhair."

But you also sounded a lot like Phil Collins on your cover of "Against All Odds." You did well on "Mama, I'm Coming Home" by Ozzy Osbourne. Each of those guys finds a resonant pocket or pockets in his voice that may be different from the placements they use to speak.

It's hard for a lot of guys to realize and accept that you have to sing differently than you speak. Even though you have a great storyteller voice.

Yeah, It kind of gets confusin" when you sing songs from many different genres. People tell you to find your own voice but with my voice different styles of singing and different effects can make a huge difference. Vocal programs will talk about things like Edge, distortion, vibrato, placement, Support glottal compression. The way I get these things are more like finding another character who uses them.

Many of the songs I posted had issues because I used the voice that I thought was my natural voice, after hearing the comments and readjusting things to not use my voice I had better reviews. I am now learning to NOT use my own voice(The one I thought was natural) and FIND one that gives a better reflection of the song I am singing. OR use one that WORKED in the past.

I may try that Phil Collins song again now that I have been playing with distortion.

  13. Some have said that I sound like the singer from the band "America". I posted "Sister Golden Hair" awhile ago.  I think you can still find it on my soundcloud page.

I always thought I sounded like the singer from "Pure Prairie League". The only song of theirs I know is "Amie". Thinking that I sound like him may be what was leading to my nasality.

Lately I have been emulating Waylon Jennings. I think it is helping me to stabilize my larynx. I am also playing with distortion....That is helping to cut out the high frequencies of my voice and balance things a little.

  14. I liked it MDEW! Although it still needs some polishing, the song and your timbre are a good match ,and you sounded relaxed. I have to ask if the guitar chords were all right, because sometimes it sounded as if the chord need to be something else. It was just a sensation, I don't know the chord progression for this song. :P

I looked up the chords on the internet and what most people had written was wrong. My chords are wrong also   I had to use poetic license and create my own for the most part'

It is hard to transfer piano chords to one guitar.....My fingers do not stretch far enough to get a bass line in there.
