  1.       Hi Kaidan29, You do have a nice tone, One thing that is a popular misconception is that soft singing takes a low volume and less effort. It actully takes as much or more effort because you are controlling the voice to sound soft. Singing generally takes an air flow and energy similar to scolding someone........... Picture this............You walk into a room and find your son, daughter or younger sibling coloring in your favorite book  or school report. Without thinking you say (with emotion)  "Stop! What do you think you are doing? I needed that."        That would be the same kind of energy needed in singing ..... Your voice needs air and energy to be efficent.

It is also easier to control pitch with this type of energy.

  2. Robert, thank you for getting back to me.  I was not bothered by the wait, it seems I've been in good hands through and through.

I have put a bit of thought into investing in your program, but I must ask, what sets it apart from CVT?  I bought that program a while ago and it helped me learn a lot, but it didn't seem to help me address what you are referring to when you speak about acoustics.  Which, I've never really thought about my voice outside of the physiological, so thank you for broadening my perspective of that.  What's difficult for me to comprehend of acoustic singing is the application since I've never really been aware of what that means and how it applies to me..

MDEW just described changing the size of the vocal tract, which is what I would assume to be similar if not exactly what you are speaking about.  I have a ways before I can afford your program at this time, so where do I start aside from pure experimentation?  After you put it into perspective, it caused me to question whether I am anything more than just acquainted with my voice/voices and that I don't really know it/them all too well.  It seems that all I know about phonation is vowel usage, which appears to be improper at that.

Also, do you really think I could make a dramatic improvement in a some-what short amount of time?  This woman that I mentioned in my original post told me that I would have to spend like a decade in making my voice what I wanted it to be, then went on to say that all training I have done already was a complete waste.  This is frustrating to me and makes me feel that I cannot achieve the level of skill I have in mind for myself.

I do not think that any training you have done is a waste. Any training is going to build some form of coordination and build strengths. One of the big differences in Roberts program is that he walks you through coordinations in what he calls work flows. It makes a big difference when some one guides you to a proper coordination for an exercise .......... And in Roberts program it is really meant as an exercise NOT just a vocalise..

Roberts passion for training singers and their progress is also an inspiration. It makes a difference when some one seems to be genuinely interested in your progress.

CVT is good product also ........ I don't think that it explains the different coordinations for their Modes too well ............. But after you train with Roberts program if you revisit CVT it will make a lot more sense and be a better resource for you.

  3. What would a thought process for that be? I was told to widen the space between my wisdom teeth, hard pallet,  and tongue.  Like keeping an imaginary light bulb in your mouth.  I try to visualize that as an attempt to make better resonance occur.  The back of my mouth and throat feel strained as I'm becoming more aware of the sensations left by my overall technique.

Also, do you know anything about healthy scream techniques?  I've thought that a different approach to that would change my edge and distortion techniques.

I am assuming this is a responce to Ronws suggestion of letting the notes resonate. Sing a note lets say G3 at a moderate volume..... without worrying about what vowel you are singing change the timbre of the sound....... you can make that note brassy and bright, deep and bright, Thin, thick.......... play with it ............ what you are doing is changing the size and shape of the resonance chamber (vocal tract) notice what changes take place to the sound and feel. Don't just sing it the way you always do, what someone else told you to do to get resonance ........... Resonance occurs when the shape of the vocal tract reacts with the note being sung........ The adjustment is not the same for everyone and holding the top and back fully open may miss the sweet spot. Play with it so you can learn how to control your own voice.

  4. Good point, MDEW, on interpretation. In a live performance of NIN, Trent sounded more threatening. Cash sound more remorseful, which is the feeling I had when I sang it. I have hurt people, either intentionally or through my own fumbling messes.

So, what you bring to the song can influence the song.

Thanks Ronws, I want people to know that my observation was not directed towards Felipes recording, Just a point to ponder for those also working on this song.

I have been thinking about recording this but it would be in a different direction from Felipe, John and Trent......I tend to express my pain a few notes higher than Johnny.;)

  5.     Nice Job Felipe, ......... Just an observation ............. it helps to record this after a few days of beating yourself up over all the crap that goes on in this life.  There is a certain pain that causes one to think......." I hurt myself today, just to see if I can feel " .........Been there done that .....the expression of this feeling is very subtle. To get it in your voice almost takes reliving it as you sing. It is never a matter of "do I sing this dark or do I express it through a talk/sing? "

I am also not proposing that every time you sing this you must be in that state of mind (that could put one into the loony bin,).......but certainly while working the song and getting the nuances down it helps.

  6.     It would be helpful for you to post a sample of you singing the song.......... There are elements that can only be determined by hearing how YOU approach the note.

Basic factors are Support, Resonance, Vowel, larynx position. Record the song the way you sing it with the band. The words being sung can influence how to sing them........Some consonants and vowels promote good airflow and stability and some hinder airflow and stability.

  7.     Thanks....I did not mention the comparison for you to change anything.....I have been trying to tighten up my own sound a bit just wondering whether to continue or accept things as they are.......I grew up with Elton and bands like the Eagles, Beatles and such where others have their influence from Dio, Glenn Hughes and Dickinson.  The difference in style is apparent but not sure whether genetics makes the difference or technique as far as over all sound characteristics.

  8. Sounds great Musikman.......Just an observation.....nothing wrong about it but I have noticed than on an extended EE(I) you tend to break it up with an H sound......

I only notice that because I have been called out on it myself..... You have a nice tight and focused voice.....Elton is more full and broad sounding.....This I mention because my own voice is more like Elton and I am wondering if it is from a Physical aspect or a Difference in Technique.......I just can't seem to tighten up my sound......I have noticed the same "Tightness" in some of the other members here.......Like KillerKu, Xamedhi and a few others......

Anyway great sound, and if it is from technique I have a lot of work to do.............

  9. So, it looks like we've got a tie here. Pop will be one genre, but Gospel and Country are tied. I'm going to give it one more day, and then, if those two are still tied, I'll have to do another random selection to decide.

Don't you mean Gospel and Jazz?   These last few months have been a real pain and I haven't had time to participate.  I still love the idea of having a challenge and I want you to know that you have done a fine job moderating this. I hope things pick up in the coming months and we get more people submitting their projects.

  10.     You sound awesome......I have felt no need to comment on your voice, I have been planning to comment on another aspect but was pleasantly surprised by this video.

I was going to suggest that the only thing that could be improved upon  was your general stage presence. In other videos you almost looked bored.

In this video you are smiling and active and appear to really be enjoying yourself......... the effect is awesome......:)

  11.      I would like to know what Community or Forum you were on that tried to convince you that you cannot sing......They are full of crap or just filled with jealous members.......

Sure there are things that you can improve from a qualified teacher or coach, but that has to do with making what you have more stable and making your voice stronger, not with the singing itself....

I cannot give tips on how to make this song sound better.....I am not qualified......It sounds better than what I could do with it......;)

  12. Thank you all ! Alright, i continiue use first advice here from MDEW not to try sing "like..."  and i tried to sing anpther song now

    http://www.mediafire.com/listen/sj6hk12q4bhofiu/thinking+(2).mp3

It sounds rough because i didn`t suppose to do full cover wich will introduce me, i just need what you think. Is it right direction? And if it is what i should do next?

Sounds pretty freakin' good to me....Those people who told you to stop singing are full of crap........Room to progress?....Sure...There always is.

I just found out that Barbra Streisand started taking lessons After she hit the big time.....Of course she was still in her teens at the time.... This just tells me that even if you have a killer voice, you can always benefit from lessons....

  13.     I have gravitated to a finger picking style that I thought would make the guitar more interesting But I suppose a full Country rhythm is better when playing by yourself.

A lot of  finger style guitarists have a way of muffling the bass strings and using them to create the "Country" or "Jazz" effect.  My way is more of an arpeggio pattern that seems kind of sterile after a while.  It does the job but not very exciting.....

  14. I wanted to join the challenges but I just couldn't get a feel for the songs. I like Brad Paisley and that is a great song but I got so hung up on Rowdy Friends, it was blocking out everything else.

And I guess, we always have the choice join a challenge, or not. But I can certainly enjoy and applaud others' submissions.

I know how you feel I almost missed the Jazz challenge because Mack the Knife got stuck in my head. I had to kill that worm before I could concentrate on Autumn Leaves.

  15. I haven't had a chance to work on this one. These challenges are a great Idea it is a shame that we are not getting more participants. I don't know if everyone is waiting for their Genre to show up or not but the idea is to do something that you are unfamiliar with, whether it sounds good or not.

Even if it does not sound good it will help you to grow as a singer and performer. Professionals often have to do things that they do not like. It is part of the job.
