Thank you Javastorm, I really appreciate the compliments. It has taken me a good while to build up to that kind of head voice control. I actually have a fairly deep voice

Hi, I thought you did a really nice job on a singer that very few are brave enough to tackle lol. I thought overall you did good work negotiating the passagio danger notes. That is always the trick with Steve Perry Vocals the man lived in the Passagio for most male singers haha. Always hard to slip in and out of those areas. I would suggest keep working on it. You seem to be hitting the notes fine and the pitch is there. The tone could be just a bit more supported I believe and it would help you sound a little more like Perry. That being said the lighter sounds can be used to show the vulnerability of the songs lyric. A great job on a super hard singer and like you Perry is a tough singer for me because of his timber and tone are difficult for me to nail.

Javastorm, your songs are always a favorite of mine. I really wish I had a "Manly" voice haha but I have a fairly bright tone and even when I sing lower it always cuts a bit and I have to work at warming it up to my liking. Great job on this tune btw, very emotive and sung with fantastic urgency. Love the tag lines at the 4 min mark.

This is something I did a few months back that I wanted to share, it's when I first starting feeling kinda comfortable around the C5-D5 area in full voice. Any and all feedback welcome.

Let's see if we can get some fathers misty eyed hahahaha... really beautiful tune with great lyrics and most importantly for me, very easy in my range.  Enjoy

Sounding great! I would love to hear you singing with a live band or better yet we have to get you in the studio A.S.A.P.! You are super solid live but it would be fantastic to get you on a studio recording where you can do multiple takes and experiment and really craft a definitive vocal take. You have the voice its time to get you on a pro recording. If you have any material to record talk to me about it. I have lots of studio work behind me and would love to offer any guidance or advice as I would love to see you succeed. I don't want to say you are coasting because you have done much more than I was doing in High School  but I learned really fast how fast youth can pass you by lol. You need to get on it girl, and start laying it down in the studio  Let's make it happen soon.

Hi, Jeremy. I enjoyed this version. Its nice to see, you are posting songs in areas in which you are working to improve. I have found it just as hard to master the lower end of my range and more conversational type singing such as this as it is to hit soaring high note type things. I heard a few pitchy notes but nothing that was too far from the melody etc. I would keep exploring this side to your voice and focus on pitch, which I know is tough on the lower notes of the range but just keep trying to bring as much clarity and brightness to the lower notes don't worry about moving lots of air with them. Great effort.

JonJon, I feel your pain about mixing. I am not the best at it either. I have used a few services where I uploaded files to a shared server and the studio pros mixed my tracks for me with very good results. It isn't super expensive either around 175ish per track. Not per hour etc and you are sent back reference mixes for approval or for making suggestions. It is fairly cheap but if you write a lot of music it can add up lol. Either way I love the track brother and will check out more of your writing.

Yeah, send me your address so I can fed-ex you a box of tissues for your tears. Finish the song, anyway. You already have more than the Beatles had when they started out.
Take advice from David Lee Roth from the song "Crazy from the Heat."
"I ain't complaining, you do the best with what you've got. I know you're laughing 'cause it's easy to tell
    I'm going crazy ...."

Hi JonJon. I enjoyed this track and would love to hear it again after a more thorough mix. I don't have much to critique here just some observation. I really liked the bridge where you doubled the vocal. It kind of put me in the mind of Paul Stanley a bit or specifically like a Kiss type of bridge. I like the tone of your voice and would love to hear it up front of the mix a bit more. I understand the early stages of mixing can be a chore but you are onto something with this song. I write a lot of originals as well and know how hard it can be to create the whole sound of the track. It can be much easier at times to just cover material. I feel the song is strong overall and just needs to have the mix punched up a bit. Great Job.

Been working hard on getting my mixes better. This one took about a week. Good learning experience. Not perfect but im somewhat proud of it

    Approximately 80 tracks involved

Its going to be a fairly low quality upload because its an MP3 to start with and then uploaded to an MP3 site
On The Inside, scratch full mix #1

EDIT: Rebalanced mix, much better On the Inside, rebalanced mix#1

    Enjoy, JJ

I have enjoyed everything by FF and "Monkey Wrench" is probably my favorite. And I have followed Dave's career, including his touring as the drummer for Queens of the Stone Age, another awesome and underrated band. I saw a recent vid where Dave showed how they recorded their latest album direct through a mixing board to 2 inch tape. Talk about committment. You have to get it right the first time. And he had the instruments and mics set up literally in the garage. Old school, low tech, and totally rocking.

I really liked "Worn" specifically because of the time changes. That is way harder to nail than a 4 on the 4 boom-chuck at 160 bpm. Definitely an AIC vibe there with a voice that went from Weiland to Staley to something new and fresh.
"Understanding" is awesome and is a radio hit with very much a Foo Fighters feel, but with a clearer and more intelligible voice. I love Dave Grohl but his growl can get so thick.

Thanks Gneetapp. That was what I meant about the song being a bit strange lol. Most of my other straight rock material stays very focused and flowing. This one was just strange and at the same time I liked it enough to just want to finish it lol. I write a lot of Fates Warning type prog music as well but still try to keep things transitioning smooth as much as I can. Thanks again for the feedback.

Hi guys, I haven't been on the forum in quite a while. I have been busy working and also super busy with my various bands and projects. This is from my band Tair. Normally in this group I play guitar and sing harmony and some lead vox not unlike Jerry Cantrell. We do mainly rock in the vein of Foo Fighters and Alice in Chains type material but this song I wrote just didn't really fit into our normal material so I just finished it on my own because I hate to leave ideas unfinished lol. Anyways, I have mainly recorded cover songs for review on the forum but I have never posted my original material so I thought I would see what you think?

Hi Simon, I haven't been on site for awhile as I have been very busy musically and otherwise lol. I agree with Roberts opinion. There are several areas you need to develop to keep your voice strong and connected and Roberts course will get you there. I do just want to mention this tho.....I don't believe it was horrible and I think the lesson to learn is what you probably are feeling is that you know you are not singing as proficiently as Rob Halford is and you know you need to improve. Most people even professionals sometimes will admit to me that they HATE the sound of their own voice coming back out of the speaker just as many people can hate to hear their own voice on an Voicemail message etc. I was guilty of pre-excusing my voice before playing people recordings of myself to blunt the attack I guess lol. If I mention it is horrible to begin with then nobody will probably add that to their critique haha. I still don't always love to hear my own voice and constantly try to improve but I have learned to know when I am in key and singing properly and whether that is tone that others like or not isn't my concern. As a singer you have to make the leap and not ask for permission to sing to an audience and offer disclaimers ahead of time. Embrace your voice and learn how to use it and develop the confidence in your instrument to entertain people and make music that YOU enjoy. Once you do this and have fun the audience will come along with you even if you don't love your voice always remember that John Lennon hated the sound of his voice and was constantly looking for ways to process it so he could tolerate it. I feel your pain brother, one of the best compliments a friend gave me on an early recording was that "it sounds great, it doesn't even sound like you" lol. Not that I was trying to sound like anyone else but rather that he also understood my insecurity at that time with my voice. Train with Robert and the rest will fall into place. If you want to sing like Halford etc you are at the right place.

Thank you Ellise  I have a few originals that would be cool to hear you sing on. They are a bit Foo Fighter-ish but a female vocal could be very interesting on them. I think it would turn out more like Pink or Kelly Clarkson with a female voice.

Thank you for the feedback Robert. I have pretty much posted only cover tunes before but the work of all singers is to ultimately put your own original spin on all of our influences etc into new original music. It is sometimes difficult for even good singers to write good vocal melodies and performances on original material. When you are doing cover work all the basic decision making has been kind of done already, but on your own tunes its a blank slate to decide how you want to come across etc. I am glad you liked the work I have done here :). I won't be absent from the forum this long again its been hella crazy for me the last few months lol.
