Critique and Suggestions Needed! Just made a quick Amos Lee cover here

My voice is really thin and my range is wanting to say the least. I am hoping this video may shine some light on how I can improve. If anyone can help me I would be very much appreciative! I am not sensitive so let it rain if you'de like.

- this is a cover of an Amos Lee tune I really enjoy. He is an amazing singer and I would love to be able to do it better justice.

You have a GREAT voice, GREAT style, and you are a GREAT guitar player!

I don't think your voice is thin. It sounds like you were holding back on volume, maybe because of the room that you were recording in? You lose a little bit of tone in the bottom of your range, but so does everyone. (My own song post showcases this loss of tone quite nicely :)) And it's tough to determine how limited your range is based on this song because the song itself has a relatively limited range. There are some general tips on how to improve your overall volume, but I'd have to see you in a live performance setting to determine whether or not you really need those tips. Really, you're doing a great job.

Quite honestly, IMO this song doesn't really shine a light on how you can improve. It seems like this song is right in your comfort zone. You have a different tone quality than Amos Lee, so you really shouldn't try to compare your sound to his. You do this song great justice.

I'm trying to make it rain with the compliments and I don't give them out haphazardly. I'm being quite sincere.

If you want to improve your singing, I think you have enough basic skills that you can work on songs that are outside of your comfort zone. Maybe a ballad that taps into different performance skills? Maybe a song that's higher in your range? Or maybe you can work on this song but make it more of your own with less copying of Amos' style. Just to name a few.

I hope that helps.

Thank you very much that meant so much to me! Yes the recording was not the greatest sound quality and I am so beat today from playing the past few nights that I could only bear to record something comfortable. I have a very odd voice in that I can go from singing Sinatra and Johny Cash comfortably one day to singing John Mayer and Bruno Mars the next. As I begin to play, I never know how my voice is going to open up. Volume is definitely not one of my strong points because I often feel like not enough of my voice is available to put considerable volume into it. There are some days when my I happen to have that access though and I am able to sing with considerably more volume. Here are some other vids if you care to take a look at them

If by "odd voice" you mean "versatile," then awesome! Yes, sometimes one never knows how one's voice is going to open up on any given day. That may have to do with vocal health - how well you're sleeping, eating, drinking water, how much talking you're doing, etc. That may be another conversation for another day. Or maybe you just never know what kind of style of song is going to sit well with your voice on any given day, and that's normal too.

I don't quite understand what you mean by, "I often feel like not enough of my voice is available..." Do you lose your voice often? Because that's definitely a vocal health thing. I'm no expert on it. But I do know some beginner to intermediate do's and don'ts.

I watched your videos. Great job(s)! But it begs the question, seems like you're singing professionally, right? If that's the case, are you working with a vocal coach or voice teacher? (Not spamming you here. I don't offer vocal coaching or voice lessons.) A good vocal coach can help with style. A good voice teacher can help with technique. Some can do both. If you're not working with a voice teacher or coach, go get one. And get a live vocal coach or voice teacher. There are some pretty good videos out there, but you're beyond that. You need someone watching and listening to you.

Keep up the great work!

Haha I apologize for the vague question. I suppose I am comparing how I sing on a normal basis to how I have been able to sing on particular occasions. Once every two months maybe I have a show where I can comfortably sing with maximum volume which is significantly more than the norm. On those days I will have complete control on the low/high ends, rich tone/articulation, effortless delivery, and an unusual range extension on both ends of the spectrum. Unfortunately, my voice is usually a small fraction of that and I cannot figure out how to have more consistent good days to save my life. I know this sounds silly but I play an average of 4 to 5 shows a week and have been since I was a sophomore in college which was a couple of years ago now so I struggle with this on almost a daily basis. I didn't really start singing until I started performing live and the only guidance I've had has been youtube videos. I am seriously considering getting a coach which was why I posted on this forum. You are definitely correct about basic vocal health principles! It's always the simple things eh?

Awesome stuff man. You have a beautiful tone and great verstility.

The lack of volume you are experiencing is coming from a lack of complete cord closure. Trust me, as someone who has just now tapped into the majority of the true volume of my voice, there is much much more volume to be had from your voice with the proper guidance.

You have a great tone, now, that suits the style you are performing in, even the cover songs. I checked out the other links, too. If you can sing like that night after night, getting tired only once in a while, I would not worry about it.

You look fit, like you have been in sports, at times. You ever have a day where you were a little tired, other days just on fire, overall, still functional? It can be like that with singing.

Impressive guitar skills. I think I am doing pretty well if I can get through "Leader of the Band" but you've got some Kenny Wayne Shepherd stuff going on.

Here's what going to a teacher, even for a few lessons will do. Listen and determine if you are doing it right, per their criteria. You can't hear yourself the way that others hear you. The teacher will either be successful or not in getting that into your brain.

A teacher may help smooth over a passagio.

A teacher CANNOT stop you from overworking.

Also, the voice is different each time. You don't sing the same way twice in a row, let alone two nights in a row.

So, I didn't hear anything wrong in any of the video clips.

Thank you for the compliments, ronws! Hah.. any appearance of fitness is a fading memory of a life before I traded sports for education. I was a serious hockey player my entire life and had an infinite reserve of energy at all times. A few years of sitting on my ass and drinking cheap beer has put that in the history books to say the least. The analogy surely applies to my music career and I could not agree more that no two performances are the same.

I suppose what I should have said was that I have been straining so much to sing that it has been wearing me down. My voice doesn't necessarily get tired but the energy I am having to force it with is exhausting. What really bugs me is that I will randomly have nights where my voice is exponentially better than usual and those nights are always effortless. It rolls right on out and I can almost always predict them based on how my warmups/exercises sound. I don't expect to be able to sing the same every night but I do know that I am not giving my voice what it needs and I'm sure it boils down to misunderstanding of technique. If anything I want to learn how to sing with less effort consistently.

I wanted to sign up before you even responded man. Check your email and youtube vids! I went to look at your site this morning and I really appreciate both how humble you are and how focused you are on the client's need rather than getting business. All of your covers are favorite songs of mine and I really can't believe you progressed from having no voice to being as talented of a singer as you are now.

Do you mind if I paste this post onto my website?

I don't mind if you post at all! Not that this is my motivation for writing such a review, but if you wouldn't mind putting my website on the review post, I would greatly appreciate it!

And I'm happy to hear that you and Aaron are going to connect!

Aaron, I replied to your reply to my post asking if you have some of your Norah covers on video, I'd love to see them!

Thanks for the referral Adolph! I did a ton of research on Robert's program and I would love to try it but it is a little out of price range at the moment.

Think so? Contact me personally at my email and we'll work something out... there is no other program that is going to give you more value... do not move forward with any other program until you review what we are offering at "The Four Pillars of Singing"... read these PDFs below! Do NOT make a hasty decision based on under qualified recommendations from some people on this forum... in this case, this guy is recommending a program they admit , they have never even experienced? Read the PDFs below and then contact me personally, we'll work something out to get you the best program in the world.

I feel the need to add this to Robert's comments :

Many of our members aren't even aware of Robert Lunte's program, "The Four Pillars of Singing". Talk to him and he can probably work something out for you.

And, I have yet to see anyone else other than Robert accepting phone calls from his clients when necessary and nearly at ANY time of the day. THAT is DEDICATION !!!

Arron,

Give Robert a call.... I assure you he doesn't bite  Sorry, I just had the need to add some humor.

Personally, I've called him myself many, many times !

Oh, and if anyone thinks that I'm biased since I'm a part of this forum, then you are DEAD WRONG !!! I'm a "straight shooter", so to speak, and I call it as I see it.... With that said, Robert is very well aware that I've tried other vocal programs myself. See my profile page >> http://www.themodernvocalist.com/profile/AdolphNamlik

The bottom line is that "Pillars" is the most comprehensive program that I have used and Robert is constantly updating his "product" !!!

I totally agree, Coach !

I could add a lot more, but it would be quite a long post. Just want to tell you how I've been spending some of my spare time (of which I have very little), over the past few years since we've known each other. Will fill you in the next time we chat....

And you are MOST WELCOME !!!

Enjoy the remainder of the day !!!!!
