  1. I tried it again this morning with the other track. I hate the guitar jam in the middle, sucks... that is why I started going off on a tangent to try to mask the shitty guitar playing... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSIwsJT2d5U
  2. I tried this new version of Child in Time and wow, the guitar and jam section really sucks on this version. Here is the other version again. Still interested in hearing some folks try it. https://thevocaliststudio.box.com/s/e38d9f413a162e984db0
  3. Im not either... the higher you go into M3 (flageolet) the less application you have to use it.
  4. The A5 is impressive, but it doesn't seem to be necessary to get the 'jist' or feel of the song... E5 works fine.
  5. Well let me ask you guys... which version do you like better, my track or this new one? I thought this 2nd one sounded more like a real band.. .but I can upload the other track that I used if you like?
  6. I can do the screams clean as well if I want to, but I chose to use distortion. It is not my voice, its what I chose to do. Thanks for your feedback. Hey, where are the other versions? I thought some folks were going to step up?
  7. Thanks Max... ya, I think the screams are all pretty decent. If captured by a real studio, it would of really sounded amazing... the verses are only ok, a couple ? seconds in it, but what ever... it wasn't intended to be some big expose' of all that I am and can be... its just one live take with my simple live take system really for no other reason, but to entertain you guys and get some credibility pts.
  8. Oh cool, that is good to know! Thanks for sharing that... Is this Ben? I think this is Ben... hope we can train again soon Ben. BTW, as far as 'old school' is concerned, this song was already 'old school' when I was 18 and first started listening to this tune. It actually is more the generation before me... its very 70s, I'm more of a kid from the 80s... that is why voice technique and great singing is something that has become who I am. Seems the serious focus on great trained vocals seemed to crap out after the 80s a bit... we had to endure the grunge and the scream movements... now hopefully, good singing is more valued and coming back.
  9. Ya this is iconic old school stuff... the pups won't get it... but old farts like Bob and me do.
  10. Your too kind Ron, really. I need to get a lot more content online. Doing my best, its hard to find the time with TVS and TMVW to tend to. But these quick little live takes like this are fairly easy to do, I'll probably be tossing up some more, at least for the gang at TMV World Forum.
  11. Thanks guys... its at least ok. Ok, I feel weird about this because I feel like I may be distributing protected content, but I do not know or remember where I got this? I looked at amazon.com and 'Child in Time' is not available there. Frankly, it seems like a very unlikely karaoke bed track for Deep Purple... probably why I ceased on it when I discovered that someone had it. So in the interest of education, here is the link to the child in time bed track for you to try and post your efforts here. Out of respect to the artist that created this bed track, please, let's just keep the postings and distribution to the TMV World Forum. If the original artist happens to come along and discover this track, please let me know and we can take it down if you have an issue with this, and let us know where we can all go to purchase it instead. https://thevocaliststudio.box.com/s/c78e657cb45408c11c38 This is actually another version a student just gave me that I think may be more cool, its more bassy and sounds more like a real band. Have fun...
  12. Hmm? Where's Formica and Jens, I thought they would be all over this? Im liking my interpretation better today than yesterday, I guess it needs to grow on you a bit... it sounds kinda thin on computer speakers, but in boomy headphones or a PA system, its pretty bad ass... goes to show you how important good mastering and real recordings can be... ya, I think its pretty decent. For those of you that are interested, here is the PA head Im using. These guys are my sponsor and they sent me this neat head that has an SD card recorder in it. You can't mix anything really, and you don't do multiple tracks... it just records what you do live into the PA, levels, efx and all. So its only good for demos, but if you balance all the levels on the gear, you can make a decent demo. http://www.vocopro.com/products/product_info.php?ID=665 The system has built in DSP effects in it as well. Its great for jamming, practicing and small gigs. The best feature is the SD card recorder module... that enables you to make instant recordings that are decent without all the hassle or expense of real studios or setting up software and interfaces at home. I also used some TC-Helicon Voice Singles pedals, the compression pedal, a touch of thickening and some reverb.
  13. DJDeth... shoot me a link for your bed track, it think it sounds better... I may redo mine too...
  14. Thanks Tommy, I have to agree. When i sing this or any other song, I consider it a "Tribute" not a "cover". I don't want to sing it like the original artist necessarily, I just want to sing it. In any case, I just threw this together for you guys... its not some big production where I had the luxury of doing multiple takes and comping, etc...
  15. Hey why don't we make this the "Child in Time" Challenge post... let's hear some other efforts?!
  16. Sure "Doc" there are songs that sound better with my voice, especially my own songs that are written for my voice with my melodies and lyrics. But I think that is probably just a given with anyone that does a cover. Thanks for sharing what you DIDN'T like. I have to say, I would probably do a much better Gillan then a Dio any day. Metallica, that is easy, I wouldn't even try it because I think it would not challenge me so much... whitesnake would be bit like Geoff Tate singing Whitesnake which would be fine too... But Dio? I don't do a very good Dio... I don't have a voice that distorts like that. Ya, there probably is a bit of a "theatery"/Bowie/Peter Murphy kind of vibe in the low stuff... I like singing like that. Nice to see you appreciate the effort... I think a big part of the story here was not missed by 'guitargeorge's" point, I wanted to do this song because it WAS hard and iconic... that is kind of the point of sharing it with you guys, not critique my chesty croons per se... but thats fine. Glad you enjoyed the effort. Its just one, live take off the cuff... it didn't have a bunch of production or expectations put into it.
  17. Im not trying to sound like Gillan. I think the screams are pretty good, the versus could benefit from being in a better studio and mic as this was just using a handheld dynamic Sennheiser e935. But its ok... I like the Gillan'esque screams at the end. Ya, the screams are pretty good, the verse is ok.
  18. I thought it was time I stepped up... This was recorded on my live system that has a lot to be desired in regards to pre-amps and compression, but thought it was decent. One live take... crank up with headphones and a lot of bass. https://thevocaliststudio.box.com/s/ebf8ef7460f93ccbeca8
  19. The white guy in this video is my student. He is a monk that lives and prays and sings in India. This is cool, thought you all would appreciate seeing this.
  20. The first thing I would ask is... why do you feel you 'need' to sound like Dave Matthews? Is this because your tribute band is one of these bands that is trying to duplicate every nuance, including using the traditional instruments, etc...? or is this just a cover tune? Understand something here... you can sing the song in YOUR voice with your color and if it is done well, the audience will like it just the same... you don't have to match Dave Matthew's formant colors... just use yours and again, it its done well, people will be ok with it. Having said that, to gets little more "Matthews" color... isn't he a bit "quacky"? Quack up a bit more in your singing and you will lean toward the "Matthews" spectrum. Hope this helps...
