  1. Sorry I missed this one. I like it. I didn't hear anything off as far as vocal technique. When it comes to the blues the only advice I would be able to give is feel what you are singing. Think back to how you felt when you were being accoused of something by someone who was hiding things from you. Use that emotion to drive the song. That's just general advice. I did not hear anything missing in this song. Great Job.
  2. There's a thread here about Michael Jackson and Seth Riggs in one of Michaels songs he was having trouble with a word starting with the hard Ka sound. Seth suggested he try it with a softer Ga sound. You can also try K-ah-nd of man instead of Kind of man. And yes I do believe that in the skynyrd version they were tuned down a half step from standard. I always have to retune my guitar to play along with it.
  3. The not wanting to get loud thing is in my mind not anyone else. I know how I was when others were playing loud music that I didn't like. I would be a hypocrit to put others through it. Another thing is they always want to hear Gospel. I don't mind hearing them sing Gospel music but I prefer other types of music.
  4. Very Good Tommy. It's just that one word in the chorus. Simple "Kind" of man. I 'm sure others here will be able to give you suggestions. I loose it right at the start of "Simple" and it goes downhill from there. Maybe you just need more support on "Kind" That would be an A4 if the song is in the Key of C. Most people use a boatload of support on that spot in the song. Otherwise it sounded great to me.
  5. Thanks Izzle. You are spot on with jaw tension also. I have a problem with gritting my teeth alot. Any suggestions on loosing the tension?
  6. I am aware of my support issue. I have been working on it. Yes I am straining on the chorus but not as much as I was last week. Also I am sitting down recording and its past 11 at night with others sleeping. Not an excuse just fact. Yeah I am also working on vowels until recently I did not know how important they were. My whole family sings but self taught We are hill billies. Mostly Bluegrass and gospel.(mostly my parents aunts and uncles). AS for taking lessons I have Seth Riggs DVDs,Roger Love, Brett Manning. Mainly I am grabbing things here and there and training in my car on the way to work. I'm not trying to make it to the Rock-n-Roll hall of fame, but am going to be singing in front of the public weather they like it or not and I would rather them like it.
  7. Let me know what you think. Any help apprieciated. http://soundcloud.com/mdew/here-without-you
  8. I have to admit that I am a 49 year old virgin to bands like Queensryche, Soundgarden, Whitesnake, Judas priest.... I was in a local band playing bass in the 80's. Playing in local honkeytonks. Everyone I knew was more into Lynyrd Skynyrd. I spent today looking up these bands on youtube. I missed out on a lot of good SH.. I will defenately be checking out more. Keith....Ron you guys ROCK! Keith you can definately do those high parts without going light, and it would kick things up a couple of notches in an already killer cover. Ron to me that was Awesome, some words I couldn't understand but I don't think I'm supposed to anyway.
  9. Someones' tag on here is "you are the master of your on destiny". I have always felt that music was my destiny. After 40+ years it is time for me to get out of my way. Weather you area teacher or not you have at least let me know some of my road blocks. I will take the info and strive to improve.
  10. Ronws, You are on the mark with my "singing as I speak" especially in the lower area. I tend to sing songs from a story telling basis. I will keep in mind that even in my speaking pitches I am still supposed to be singing. I had not made that connection. Thank you.
  11. Ronws, Thank you for listening. I appiciate Tough Love. For me It's harder to get advice or a true opinion because people may not want to hurt my feelings. I went ahead and posted this song because I feel that it is a good representation of the way I have approached singing for the last 30+ years. It should show the good and the bad. I was at practice last night. My band is playing for a benefit Today. Last week our Guitar player decided to get a guest singer to sing for us. He wanted the new singer to sing all the songs. We had one practice with him. Last night and we play today. I took your advice and insisted that they keep my song in. I redirected that frustration into my support and emotion. The song went way better. I hope it does as good today. I will do my best for the sake of the song and for the Girl we are Honoring today. Tommy, Thank you also. Sometimes I do play that song faster and sometimes slower. I have heard it from a lot of people from Kenny Rodgers,Kris Kristopherson,Johnny Cash and Janice Joplin. I was just singing it the way I feel it. I still haven't landed on a solid beat that I will always use with the song. It is good to hear someone say faults or not I liked it. That lets me know that i have something to work with.
  12. I haven't had the oportunity to record anything new and add your suggestions. This was recorded about 6 years ago. Let me know what you think. http://soundcloud.com/mdew/bobby-mcgee
  13. I am working on my vibrato and my support. I hope to upload a new recording soon. My recording equipment is bottom line but it should get the job done. Altho I believe I am breathing properly. I have not been able to lose the habit of pushing with my throat. I know that the breath should be regulated by the support mechanism but I have not been able to use it. No one in my area has taken proper voice lessons. So around here you either have it or you don't. I am trying to improve. I either just don't have it or I intimidate the hell out of the other singers because they just will not share the load. I also get that it's not about me, it's about the song and that is why I want to improve. So I can sing the songs that I love.
  14. So thats it? No other suggestions or comments? Tone just unappealing? No emotion? Not enough twang? Too breathy? I am asking for your impressions, input. If it's not appealing give me a suggestion.something to change to make it better. I respect your views, At least let me know why it is not worth commenting on. And yes Ronws, I am working on vibrato and I will record "Momma I'm Commin Home"
  15. In my life I have asked over and over from people, What is lacking in my singing or what can I do to make it better. They usually either do not comment or say I don't know or that I did fine. Thank you, I am looking for critisizm. I cannot grow if everyone says I did fine when even I know something is missing. The lack of vibrato is because I have been told in the past that it is not natural. There are songs that I sing when a natural vibrato comes out on its own. I will work on that. This song I wanted to sing the way I would express myself. Funny how you have to go to strangers to get real input. I am working on my support. That should help the vibrato come out. As a side note no one can sing a Bonnie Rait song like Bonnie Rait. And I love " Momma I'm Commin Home".
  16. Thanx. I have a long way to go before that.
  17. I recorded this about 10 years ago. I still have the same issues. Any advice would be appreciated. I did all the music on a home recorder. http://soundcloud.com/mdew/something-to-talk-about2
  18. Felipe, The other clip, the REO song, I did last night in the bedroom trying to get something for all of you to hear. Yes I was tense . I wanted to get it in a soon as I could so you all had something to hear from me. This song was written by my aunt and she wanted an old style country flavor. The songs on soundclick that were written by my brother have more of a pop or blues feel. Ronws, I know now that I am not supporting correctly. But the advice that the both of you gave in another post has given me good direction. That should help in getting my vibrato started. And the dynamics. I had always thought that I was supporting correct But people have kept telling me I was singing from the throat, But could not guide me on what I should do to correct this.
  19. Thanks for your comment. I am looking for improvement. That is why I am here. If you notice anything I need work on let me know. I do not know what to train or how.
  20. Although I have been singing for 40+ years I am still a beginner. I have just learned about cvt and the concept of modes. I have had no voice training. I have been watching the various singing tips on youtube trying gain understanding and improve my singing. Any advice would help. About 10 years ago I made some recordings For my Aunt who needed a demo of her songs, also some songs that my Brother wrote before he passed. They are mainly Country oriented which is not my preference by I was recording for them not me. Everything is me except drums. If you notice any roadblocks in my voice please let me know. http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=5203271&q=hi&newref=1 www.soundclick.com/joepublic
