  1. First off, props for doing this difficult song. I'm digging the uniqueness in your voice, but I also think you need to add a bit more chest like you said. What could you do? I'm not entirely sure, I just think the high notes sound a bit thin and you could sound better if you did something differently. The classic advice I always give for adding more "fullness" is to check out support techniques on youtube if you're not practicing them already. Best of luck! Edit: It's only in the chorus where I think something should sound differently. The "ooh, yeah yeah!" parts and the bridge both sound great to me.
  2. Thank you, however I noticed some pitch fluctuations in some of the lower parts. Probably because my voice isn't really supposed to go that low:P
  3. Haha, I tried that but it just sounded silly (to me anyways) I'm afraid my singing will never have a flawless accent...
  4. https://soundcloud.com/hordurar/misty I remember sitting in the theater, speechless during this particular scene. In my opinion, one of the best in the movie. I wondered if I could sing this low so I went ahead and recorded it. I Hope someone here has seen the movie and can relate. I went with the exaggerated reverb because I think it fits well with the song. What do you think? :)
  5. Laughed at the beginning I like your base tone but still sounds nasal, try opening your mouth almost as far as it will go when singing. See if you notice anything different in your sound.
  6. I like it Nice emotion! The highes notes sounded very good, but I think they would sound great with a bit less distortion. Might just be personal opinion.
  7. I liked it Can't really add anything to the existing comments, but it was good.
  8. Thank you Ron, good comment I remember singing this with my old band, it felt easier because we were just jammin' and completely letting go, whereas in a recording environment I'm trying to keep proper microphone distance, with the microphone mounted on a stand. That extra little bit of support I get when I lean forward for the high notes (with the mic in my hands) when singing live might be it. I only cover one ear with my headphones while recording btw, maybe I will try your tip on panning to that ear and turning down the bass :)
  9. Thanks for commenting guys and Jugulator, I have no Idea what note A#4 is When I've done a proper warmup I don't really feel much strain doing this song with less high notes, so I guess it can't be too bad for my voice after all.
  10. Yeah, I'm aware of it not being too healthy Just wanted to see if I could still do it! Next time I'll pick something better suited to my range. Thanks for the comments guys
  11. I think you did a good job, but I liked "Prowler" better, fits your range better IMO. I'm not saying this is bad , Run to the hills is a difficult song for anyone to sing Still, you have some really nice high notes in you!
  12. So, I used to sing this song a lot a few years ago but had no recording equipment. I always remembered it as being easier to sing, lol. The high part starting at around 2:11 was a struggle, recorded it in 3 separate parts due to fatigue. I can sing this song in one take, but then I have to modify this particular part. Still, decided to leave it like this for you to hear what the high notes sounded like. They were more of an experiment than anything else. Please share your thoughts Technical or other!
  13. I had a period where I almost exclusively sang skid rows songs. It required a LOT of practice and often I felt like I was going to pass out. I eventually stopped and today I can't sing these songs convincingly My voice isn't used to the high notes anymore. Of course bach's high register is pretty much kaput nowadays, because he was constantly screaming those high notes. It sounds great on record but it's very hard to find decent live footage of him (there were some decent performances in between). He was very keen on letting the crowd help him in the choruses and I don't blame him one bit:P IMO I think it's better for a singer's overall vocal health to save those screaming notes for one chorus or so and focus on a sexy voice in the range he's comfortable in. That's one of my goals :)
  14. Thanks for your kind remarks Marcus, legend has it that's how the vikings pronounced "wisdom"... I actually think I added as much reverb as I could before it started to sound a little too over-processed. I'm not even sure my Pro Tools SE editions allows for delay lol. Will have to check that out.
  15. I think he was referring to the "o" in wisdom. I'm from Iceland by the way ;)
  16. Thanks for replying, agree with the word "wisdom" About the mix quality, I felt this was the best I could do lol :)
  17. Good to know you liked it ron I'm definitely not trying to sound like the original, this is pretty much how I sound when not adding any "fake effect" on my voice and I accept that. What I'm most glad about is the fact that most people seem to think it fits the song. I'm not even sure I'll redo the song (in the near future at least), as I like it so much and wouldn't want to get bored of it due to excessive recording over and over again. Maybe another Kamelot song, or something completely different!
  18. Thanks for the reply Teodur, nice and honest:) I'm always looking to improve and I chose this song because it's one of my all time favorites and I thought It would be a great challenge (which it was). Maybe I'll redo it when I think I've gotten better :)
  19. I agree, but that's part of what makes them great. That step from easy to hard where you're just thinking "damn..". The last chorus was relatively comfortable to sing (compared to the others), as it doesn't have a bridge or verse tied to it.
  20. Thanks, but I actually had to record the trouble parts I mentioned seperately. I tried and tried but couldn't get them to sound somewhat decent without taking a deep breath and singing them one by one. Since then I've actually studied the singer's live performance and next time I'm going to try and change (for example) the "o" vowel in "soul" to a "u" sound, which is actually what I did in the last chorus and is often easier . Hopefully this will cost less energy and help me get through the chorus in a single take. Edit: I'm not trying to sound like the Roy, but studying his tricks can help Edit 2: About that depth. This is actually something I've been trying to work on and is an ongoing process. Maybe it's related to the "add more emotion" tip I received not too long ago.
  21. I feel like I have to comment, as I just bumped my own Kamelot cover I actually really like the sound of your low register and the lower part of your higher register, even though some notes were a bit out of range I don't think they're that far out of reach. But that's normal for this band. I have a huge love/hate (mostly love) relationship with them as so many of their songs are a bitch to sing no matter your voice type. Your vibratto sounds very good, too. As MDEW said, a little more reverb would help to make the vocals blend to the track a bit and help with the overall feel.
  22. Decided to give this a bump as there was so little response. Should have added more info in the OP. So, I want to know if people think my voice fits this style of music in general. I know that the "the fire in my soul rejects my wisdom parts at 2:00 and 3:00 don't sound quite right and will be working on improving that once my exams are over. I think the chorus after the solo actually turned out the best. Was kind of skeptical of that high note before recording, but to me it sounds better than the first 2 supposedly easier choruses. P.S, The singing starts at c.a 1:24 if someone doesn't want to listen to that awesome intro :P
