... your demos have tempo problems Jarom... start with locking down the tempo and groove better... its rushing and slowing down and rushing... music like that... needs to "drone" dude... be very steady.

    Good for you Jarom.
Hats off to anyone that writes their own tunes.
I really love the modality of these songs... they are a bit minor aren't they. I have heard your songs before and you have a flare for the "sad" and "spooky" I think. Your songs remind me a bit of "The Cure"... which is hauntingly beautiful music.
Your voice is also lovely, it has great potential...
    However,...
You can improve Jarom by cleaning up the basic musicianship. This music has SO MUCH potential for dynamics and sensitivity, but I think your missing the cues bud. You are missing what your own song is asking you to do for it... its a little bit rushed, a little bit one level in dynamics... it sounds to me like your just not sensitizing yourself enough to what your own songs could be doing. You're being careless. Your like Lenny from Steinbeck's "Of Mice & Men"... petting a mouse too hard, but with the best intentions.
You should get in front of me for 1 or 2 hours on skype and let me coach you on these two songs.
Also... you need to find a better way to produce recordings. Even if it is just a raw idea... you can do better then this. Get a small recording device and record "in-line" to a PA system that has both your keyboard and your vocals in it... not some recorder that is sitting on the other side of the room.

Your voice is amazing! Like RonWS said, I would like to hear you closer and your piano playing is excellent.

I liked both, a lot. But I liked the first one even more, I can imagine more or less the song structure it could have and how the build up works for the climax and stuff... Also I like intense ballads. I liked your ideas to the point of wanting to sing them when I listen to the end result, and I only want to sing stuff I feel.
Also I think  your voice fits well your style of creating. Of course I'm only judging from the two recordings I just heard haha

Dude, that is the way to go. If you get a chance, read the book "Guerilla Home Recording." That guy belongs to a group that does that exact thing, the goal being 20 songs amongst them in a 12 hour period. There will be some dogs. And there will be a few gems that are worth polishing. Like a creative writer, just write something, even if you don't use it. It will lead to other ideas that do work.
I just had a flash of insight for a song I am trying to write and stumbling. I have some lyrics and a vocal melody but was stumped trying to figure out the right guitar part. Then, I realized, why not let the vocal melody define the guitar riff? It doesn't matter how you get there, as long as you get there.

I like both ideas. I have a home recording setup but when I am in "Idea Collection" mode I tend to just turn on a mic or a guitar etc and lay down the ideas quick and dirty lol. I will often do this until I have maybe a half hour or more of song ideas. I wrote a song the other day when I went back to the beginning of a 45 min doodle location and had forgot all about the ideas I put down at the beginning of the song location! I refined it etc. but I think trying to capture the vibe is the most important thing when trying to archive an ideas to develop later.

Good ideas, you should develope those. Make the most of your studio time when you get there.

Yea there is actually. If I have it close up it distorts and is actually even harder to hear. So, yea that's the reason. I'm going into the studio to get some high quality recordings in April. These were just quick recordings on a broken phone while I was playing around with some ideas.

Right off the bat, I like the first song more. If you are just asking for personal preferences, that's it. Though I would like to hear your voice better. Is there some religious reason for having the recorder so far away? It doesn't make sense from a recording standpoint and I don't want to step on religion but I was wondering if it was possible to get the mic a little closer.

Messing around with a few song ideas. These are not polished at all yet and are in the early stages of song writing.

This is  not a song I would normally try to cover but my wife has been playing it over and over. I needed to record it to get it to stop playing in my head.
Any thoughts on what I need to improve on is welcome.

Take it easy, just a little pin-prick. There'll be no more "ahhh!" but you may feel a little sick
Can you stand up? I hear you're feeling down. But I can ease your pain. Get you on your feet again.
There is no pain you are receding. A distant ship's smoke on the horizon ....

Nice song, man!  It sounds really good. You seem to get the vibe and the feeling of the song very well. I haven't listened to the original, but I like your interpretation enough to not want to listen to the original, haha.  The only one thing is that I hear some consonant inconsistencies somewhere in there, like... a not well coordinated "L", so the word sounded funny, and something like that. And also, a bit of an inconsistency with the highest notes in the song, It doesn't matter that it changes a bit in timbre, its alright. Voices change throughout the range, we have all sorts of colors and spaces, BUT it didn't sound as reliable as it could be, but it could be due to not being that warmed up. In some of those high places it felt a bit shaky, or a bit chaotic, which I don't mind... but I think it was not the intention, right? That's why I'm making the observation. Overal, I like your timbre and the way you¿re using your voice, man. You have made a lot of progress

Now, I know you don't like doing exercises, you like to get right into singing hahah  but singing this song as a warm up may not be the most efficient way I think.
If you don't like doing exercses you could just grab the guitar and improvise some atmospheric stuff, guitar and voice, sustaining long AHs and other vowels, in different intensities, until your voice feels pumped up and ready to belt and take the pressure, hahah.
I do this as a warm up, I don't do scales anymore when training ( unless I want something in particular ), but now I have more of a musical approach. I just do whatever note comes out, in the most comfortable pitch, usually around the B3-C4, in mid-high intensity, and start improvising melodies around that pitch.
The area of pitches starts expanding, and when I feel very comfortable sustaining long G4-A4 in high intensity then I know I'm ready to sing and my voice can take the load of more chaotic stuff, like the songs I find hard.

I'm just mentioning this to you because I know the feeling of wanting to sing right away, haha, but really really it is always best to sing very warmed up. Because it sounds better and it FEELS so much better. Imagine how it would have sounded if you had warmed up before    So, I hope that doing something like this might make you enjoy warming up a little more.
Letting my voice do whatever it wants to do and whatever feels more comfortable, cranking up the intensity pretty fast. From the middle of the voice first, to the extremes. At least for me is far more interesting than doing scales. And if you improvise along with another instrument it definitely will train your ear too.

And I really like how your voice sounds on this song, too. Again, you need to keep this in your "ready to sing" set list.

Congratulations, You are just like the rest of the male population. Singing is NOT instinctive, there are many aspects that go into it. Best answer is to get a GOOD teacher or GOOD program. "The Four Pillars of Singing" is a good program.
That being said, the reason you sound the way you do when you speak is do to a coordination you are using. You could just as easily speak lower and sound like  an advertising announcer. When speaking we use things like accents, inflections and other types of adjustments that are learned from our environments that  we do not use in singing. Figuring out all of this stuff is almost impossible on our own.

Here is what I don't understand about Soundcloud. I get it, they want to help protect copyright. Here's the deal about copyright. If you buy a karaoke track from a legitimate retailer, you have paid copyright for use of what is basically a pre-master stem. You only have to pay additional royalties if you want to sell that recording of yours as a single or part of an album or collection of songs. Because selling that recording you made involves what is called mechanical rights. (reproduction of the material in a medium to be used by others.
If there is no cost, I don't see what the problem is.
A company that owns a bar pays a blanket fee to ASCAP to play whatever music on the jukebox or however they are playing music. Because then, the music is part of the environment the owner is "selling" to the public.

Hi MDEW, that is exactly what I always do too: name it as song title vocal practice. They got me once. Then, I re-uploaded the file with a totally different name (Vocalpractice HardRock Mar2016, and they still got me. So, from now on I will be posting my cover songs on the Box server. Cheers
