.... also, I just want to say. I love your set up... but I want to encourage you to also take some time to get out from your training station... so to speak, and go sing with just a mic, mirror, music and if possible an audience ( karaoke ). I want you to balance what you are doing here, with some environments that are also a bit loose as well... a place where you would sing, without concerning yourself with your technology and setup.
I want you to do both. The serious training space GREAT... and then make time to unbutton your collar and just go "do it".

    Hello and good day everyone!
This post is being created to start a video journal of the learning process. I have no prior experience singing and never considered it until just recently.
I have been going over the material these past few weeks, practicing onsets as I learn them. I can already see this is going to become a much bigger part of this life so I had to make some room for it. I cleared out a corner of one of the rooms and created a permanent setup so I can just walk in and press record anytime I would like to practice.
The first video posted will give an introduction to the setup.
From here, I will continue to post additional videos as time progresses.
It is a pleasure to join you all on this journey and I give thanks and gratitude.
    Much love!!

I was attempting to find a way to share these ongoing videos without creating too big of a mess on this thread.
To make things as easy as possible, I will be repurposing an old website and utilize the blog for making the journal entries.
In this way, all of the journal entry links can be kept here much like a catalog that can be referenced back to the site.

Adolph Namlik reacted to mchlclark in Lightning up vocals as much as possible with connection
I'm attempting to lighten up my vocals whilst still maintaining a definitely connected sound with good color. This is not how I intend to always sing, just trying to find the lowest possible effort and lightness with good sound, then am going to go to the opposite extreme. My goal is to find my limits on both ends. Any comments on this effort will be appreciated.

Wow, thanks Robert. And yes the only reason I was able to sing this light and connected, was the sobbing you have me doing. So thanks again for that, it is changing my vocals on a daily basis.
And I will definitely get some more compression and balance the air better. I guess those two things are closely related anyways. I'm going to carefully go to the opposite extreme. Get really compressed/quaky, and more amplified. Then find some middle ground. Then practice it all, and apply it for dramatic effect in my singing.
So I really am aiming at Jeff Buckley style vocals. His ability to go from quiet whisper, to middle of the road compression, then full on attacking a lyric just below distortion levels, leaves me in awe. And is very inspiring. Which is why I chose this song actually. As he has a version of this song.
Yeah the guitar was half arsed, I can definitely do better. I was concentrating on the vocals so much, my strumming didn't get much of my attention. The volume was up and down, due to me just banging away on it. Saying it was bangy is apt, as I literally was banging on the guitar lol... My fingering wasn't great either. If you listen closely you can hear some strings aren't depressed enough, so are slightly muffled etc... I will focus on the guitar for a bit, and get it right, then go back to the vocals.
Thank you for your help Robert. I'm still practicing, and studying etc... And will catch you for a lesson soon. I was planning on moving, but it didn't work out. So am stuck where I am for another couple of years. So just gonna stop making excuses and put out some ads, fliers etc... And get some clients. I took an honest look at my efforts to become a Vocal Coach, and I can do better. So as I'm not moving for a while yet, I can afford some lessons with you in a few months.

Thanks for the reply Robert. Those are really helpful comments.
The breathy tone is definitely my default and while it has it's place, I agree that I should have transitioned into a more present, assertive tone midway through the song. I used to only have a breathy tone and it has always been a "safe" place to sing from. There's something stabilizing about that posture for me. I have, over time, managed to cultivate other tones with more closure and resonance but they are less familiar so I rarely reach for those levers.
As for the cues- I think you're right about the one at :51. I think the delivery was just late and that could be seen as an oversight. Having said that, I do have a tendency to let my phrasing sit a little bit behind the beat. It might be from years of listening to Zeppelin but it's definitely something I do a lot. Sometimes I think I should try to be more deliberate about my phrasing...kind of along the lines of Liam Gallagher or something. That would probably help contribute to an overall sense of assertiveness.
The main source of paranoia/self consciousness for me over the past few years has been pitch/intonation. I know there was a time when I couldn't hear when I was a little under/over a note. I think I do now, but I don't always trust my ear. There are a couple of spots in this tune that sound a little out to me. Nothing crazy but still......
I did play the melody on a piano along with the finished vocal and there were definitely some areas that rubbed a little. Sometimes I wonder if doing that sort of thing is too stiff of a measure. Since I've gotten into some ear training I've realized that a lot of my favorite music from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's have vocals with less than perfect intonation. Anyway....
Yes...it's an original. I appreciate the supportive comments.

Hello Hobbit, good to hear you again.
    - I like the lovely color of your voice. Sort of a sweet, husky tenor... nice.
    - You need to work on tighting up your cues. There are some places that are not on the cue, that shouldn't be missed. Carelessness. For example :51, your late.
    - 1:26 . on this bridge, I would coach you to have more compression and amplify your vocal folds more... remove the windy tone for a more assertive connected sound.
    - 1:39 - 1:57... same thing... I would remove the windy tone on this bridge... a more connected vocal folds, amplify more, sound more "confident" in the character... but I still love the color of your voice.
Is this an original? If so, congratulations... I think its really cool...  It sort of reminds me of the soundtrack from "Into The Wild"... some tasty Eddie Vedder tunes.

The song sounds great and you look and sound awesome. The best advice I can give is tell you not to sign any contracts that take away your rights to your songs and other personal rights. That has a habit of happening in the music business. Other than that God bless and keep on singing......

Hello Danilo, great to see you in here and good to see your taking your training seriously by getting professional feedback.
    - Another good Italian singer... !  You should be singing... it needs work, but you have the "pipes" to be a good singer...
    - Find an application that can slow down the bed track, without changing the pitch. There are serveral apps. that do this. One I recommend is called "capo" and you can get it for Mac/iPhones... its awesome.  Drop the bed track into the app. and slow it down about 1/4 speed.  Then begin working on your parts at a slower speed so that you can...
    1. Clean up the intonation... its pitchy and needs to be cleaned up. Always, work on not scooping into the onsets and "tailing" down on the offsets. All singers do this sometimes and its the firs thing you need to do to fix your intonation. That alone, will make a BIG improvement.
    2. Your tone is a bit quacky and bright. You may have a bright voice naturally which is fine, but I am not convinced that it has to be THAT bright. You need to work on techniques inside your copy of The Four Pillars of Singing , that add warmth to your color, that would be:
    a. Work on dampening or slightly lowering your larynx more.
    b. Sing with more Sob/Cry in everything you do. It warms the sound and it slightly lowers the larynx as well (a)... this will help in a big way.
    c. Tune your formants ( sound colors ) with more /ou/, /uh/, /aw/ ishness... this is a generality. The exact tuning will depend on your unique voice, but mixing in these colors to what you already have going , a lot of /eh/ and /a/ "cat"... will help. Remember with singing vowels, your not trading one for the other!!  It is not, "give me /ou/ and take away /eh/"... you are ADDING TO the existing sound color "chemistry".  As a TVS student, you know what that means.  Review the lectures on "The Sound Colors of Singing".
DO THOSE THINGS AND THEN COME BACK WITH A NEW RECORDING AND I KNOW WE WILL HEAR BIG IMPROVEMENTS!
... going after QR songs huh?.... That takes big nuts... good job!
Welcome to the family... the techniques Geoff Tate trained are the exact same workouts you have in your TVS course... Geoff Tate and I had the same voice coach...as you may already know.

    Everyone understands your problem Noah.
Noah, a word of advise... don't look for "tips". Tips don't make you a better singer and you don't need "tips" because you purchased my training program which is 170 lectures and over 300 training files that tell you  and show you EXACTLY what you need to do. Don't look for short-cuts Noah... you have to practice.
To build the head voice begin by learning how to get there with bridging techniques... "Lift up / Pull Back" in your TVS program.
Then master the onsets that are in your training program, they are used to isolate muscle strengthening ... The following onsets are good for head voice work.
    - Attack & Release
    - Dampen & Release
    - Messa di Voce
    - Contract & Release
    - Quack & Release
    TRAIN ALL OF THEM!

Both of the linked videos have tips. If you need to, start with an /ou/ vowel, focused towards the front of the soft palate. There are ways to color the head voice with chest voice musculature (among other things) once you get used to singing in a more resonant head voice.
