  1. Couldn't agree more with Chavie... that is a great cover in every way. You have these harmonies going and I think that sometimes I can hardly do the main line lol Thanasis
  2. We're on the same page, I can hear the same thing. That intro at the beginning of astronomica has a few "unhinged" notes that sound shaky, terrible, pitchy and all that (mainly endings). I'll have to re-visit that. However, I am not sure I completely dislike that heady. disconnected sounding, approach on the intro as a whole. I'd like to hear more opinions so I can reset my ears. And I've found that after not being in the game for so long, I need to re-work on my support and compression (both of which I used on War of the Worlds). However bad sounding these samples are, the more opinions I get, the more I understand what I really sound like and how I can improve, Thanks, Thanasis
  3. Also Jagulator, do all the parts of Astronomica sound disconnected to you, or is it the clean ones (eg. the introduction before the main verse kicks in ?). Anybody who agrees/disagrees with jag, or has something to comment ? Be honest guys, I'm learning just like every body else. Thanks, Thanasis
  4. CHeers Jag, I was afraid that would be the case when I sing with that piercing tone but I am slowly finding how to make it sound more connected (some notes in astronomica are that way, most aren't) Is it the same for war of the worlds though ?
  5. Astronomica was sung using head voice & distortion or whatever that is and War of the Worlds is full voice & gruff except for the "that only dust remains" and "astronomica" parts were it is, inevitably, the piercing voice. Astronomica :https://app.box.com/s/jd3m8yr2ajyso1ykkjfn War of the Worlds : https://app.box.com/s/3f1gx0pyol3p049ie4ku The Other Side of Midnight : https://app.box.com/s/ik9bq3eyiwqggy5kocta Anything you like/dislike ? Cheers, Thanasis EDIT : Astronomica has been updated to correct the completely "disconnected" parts EDIT2 : Added a 3d song : The other side of midnight EDIT3 : Added a more distorted version of Astronomica : https://app.box.com/s/9qykxthujle6olreteol
  6. Wow, thanks Ron. I have to admit I am starting to understand some of my mistakes (eg. the "ee"s on that full voice part) but the more I sing, the more I can control things. As soon as I have a decent internet connection again, I´ll try to correct any issues. I have to admit that when nobody else is commenting, it does make me think that it might be because it is atrocious and they are trying to be polite, but I too hear parts that I don´t like. Thanks again buddy, Thanasis
  7. I gave it another go : This one with all the mid section in a light/heady voice : https://app.box.com/s/qf9m5y70a4z2urgqdpuu And here the mid section in full voice : https://app.box.com/s/us473s0bs1stjch8ymy1 Obviously I changed my mixing chain to a more appropriate one. Better ? Worse ?
  8. Thanks a lot Ron. I recorded and re-recorded but now that I listen to it I find there are still weird or pitchy spots here and there. I have to admit that when I put on the headphones, I really struggle because what I hear in those shitty little cans is not what I hear in the room. It does kill the my concentration 90% of the time. There is indeed a tonal flip to hit those notes which I understand are no problem for most but used to drive me nuts in the past. I don't know if I could do this piece entirely clean, I might give it a go. One more thing, I shouldn't have used a limiter in a ballad and not having a proper backing track means there is no way to properly mix the voice in with the music. Thanks again, I appreciate it. Than
  9. You're certainly blessed with a wonderful voice. Cheers, Thanasis
  10. Can't hear any weak point DJ. Will you be doing any more manowar covers ?
  11. How is my pitch in this one ? https://app.box.com/s/yyk1s2ogygou2o7w125g EDIT : (new attempts) This one with all the mid section in a light/heady voice : https://app.box.com/s/qf9m5y70a4z2urgqdpuu And here the mid section in full voice : https://app.box.com/s/us473s0bs1stjch8ymy1
  12. Gates of Babylon in a second take (same vain) : https://app.box.com/s/1mldf0d4n9f41h47fwvb
  13. I think Chavie has a tone that's closer to all of Dio's characteristics, whereas DJ follows closely Dio's cleaner tone. Mine is more guttural (but notes are still clear) and Ron's is the pure head voice approach. It's great that we get to hear all these different takes. Edit : Better mixed Rainbow in the Dark : https://app.box.com/s/0dllu0utq3tlksf79ynl https://app.box.com/s/3hg7zyr5zri6nzkwwrwi Last in Line : https://app.box.com/s/xieuys03v7b9njsqzg2y
  14. I'll let you know via email but your memory serves you very well, it was brutal.
  15. Sorry, I though it was that last version we talked about.
  16. 15 years ago ? This is the 1st time I heard you singing with rasp, so I had no idea. Is there a specific sound that led you to that rasp ?
  17. Your voice has evolved so much (from what I remember), your tone is unbelievable. I can hear anything from Kiske and Tate to Dio and Jeff Scott Soto. Is this mostly head voice ? And how did you start approaching that wonderful rasp ? Cheers, Than
  18. I've already told you my opinion on your singing through email, so you know what I think. Rainbow in the Dark : https://app.box.com/s/0dllu0utq3tlksf79ynl https://app.box.com/s/3hg7zyr5zri6nzkwwrwi Last in Line : https://app.box.com/s/xieuys03v7b9njsqzg2y Unworthy, I know, but it is a snapshot of my effort at this point in time. Cheers, Thanasis Edit : Better mixed
  19. Oh but he has lol On the other hand, I did try to use my voice in a totally different way than before, short of "reset" it in a way or two and I am glad I did. But as far as real singing goes, zero. Just different overall voice use.
  20. I had no idea this thread existed. Here's QotR : https://app.box.com/s/x6i4egzc28bjuiq4818s (This is the same version as in my 3 metal songs thread) No pitch correction, 2 takes and I tried to focus on the bright/heady side of my voice that comes relatively easy. Cheers, Than
  21. My take is that in the studio they tend to record endless takes (same with Ripper who claimed to be so) and add to that the fact that he was at his prime vocally, it does sound like a weird mix of head/chest. Live however, it has always been head/thin+rasp/twang. Anyhow, your version does sound brutal man
  22. You honestly think this voice sounds thick ? I was worried it sounds too fake/thin/lacking "meat" to be honest.
  23. You're gonna drive me nuts.... you're singing Painkiller in full voice ? With grit ? There's no way I can produce that kind of vocal weight up there... I like your approach very much although I must admit, I do prefer this song in head voice. Sounds like you could nail a Dio song.
  24. I used to warm up to ktva3 every morning, but this last year has been ... never mind. I do have a similar problem when I add grit but only when I involve chest voice, not when I do what you hear. This is all above the passagio, it's all an over-twanged type of head voice (or something similar) and it comes very easy. Too easy some times. The key here is to maintain the ping/bright light tone underneath and focus on that, otherwise this grit falls inside the throat (that's exactly how it feels then) and it grinds the vocal chords. It's loud as hell but I don't need to push anything and I'd like to state that the recording does not capture the aggression this voice produces, when you hear it live it's like a machine gun. I'd like to ask you guys, can you tell this is disconnected from chest voice ?
