    Hi Collin

Thank you for your comment. I guess I wanted to make it my own so I did not want it to sound just like the original.

Too many people approach the ease of editing digitally with the wrong sense of purpose. I like the old human recordings. Just because you can fix and edit something to death does not mean that you should. That being said, part of the reason for letting a flat note get on the record is time and money. No one may have noticed until the mastering phase. You have to remember, that was 1974. Tape machines were reel to reel and it would be another ten years before you had affordable 4 track machines that used cassettes.
So, here you are mister producer (in this case, a lot of Jimmy Page in the decisions.) The album was already in the can and in mastering, where they set order and eq and sound levels to sound good on a vinyl LP phonograph. And that last note was the only note in the whole song that was a smidge off and no one catches it until now, yes that really does happen. Well, that would mean that you would have to go back, cut out with a razor just the section with the end part in it And record on another piece of tape and splice it in. And you won't get the same sound. The song was recorded in one take in the great hall at the Crowley castle that Jimmy had just bought.
Or just leave it be and release the album on time. A lot of human things left in were done so because it was too expensive or laborious to go and fix it later in the game,
Not the case now with DAWs and gigantic memory. You can keep all takes nondestructively. You can edit as easily as you would with a word document. Line up whatever you want wherever. If you have a DAW like Reaper, Pro Tools, FL gazillion, you already have more, functionally, than the beatles did for recording strategy.
Now, you can pick something to death and so you have to force yourself into a "tape" mentality. Give it a finish date and no go-backs after a mix date, just like real life.

for me its the opposite. What I am feeling as "quack" (really mega duck sounding) is related more to a choking/squeezing feeling where I was using twang to try to squeeze out a note higher and higher but it just gets too tight and thats that. Its the feeling I get when near the top of my headvoice.

Today at work I had a pretty solid breakthrough related to hitting higher notes and connecting better etc to do with feeling the connection and resonance more in the soft palate as opposed to just trying to squeeze harder and harder. I got a great feeling of squeezing the gut and having a good hard connection of air pressure all the way from the diaphragm up to the soft palate....and was picturing the sound coming off and bouncing forward off of the soft palate. That really helped me to avoid squeezing/choking when trying to get higher notes.
All in all in the last 3 days or so my whole level of singing technique has taken huge steps. Its pretty exciting. Now I need to do some study to be able to identify exactly WHAT I am doing lol

Thanks a lot man, I appreciate it "Southern Gentleman" hahaha.. reminds me of Chet Atkin's guitar more than myself.
I plan to move back purely because I miss the country lifestyle.  Thought I would come out to the city for bigger opportunities with school but I ended up finding out that the opportunities weren't worth the stress of living in the heart of the city.  I'm thankful for the experience but I can't wait to get back heheh.  Thanks again you two.

Hey guys, sorry for not being around for the last few weeks.  I took a quick trip back home to see my family and start the preparations to moving back to MS from California.  I recorded this tune today for fun and would be happy to share it with the few classic country fans we have here.  Anyway, happy to be back on the forum and hope you guys enjoy.

Some powerful singing Rob. Has almost an Iced Earth tinge to it. That is why I'm planning on going through you as a vocal coach in the near future as I would love to have a voice that commands respect and gets the point across.

JonJon, I just had the chance to listen to your sirens. You can even see that the second siren in your first clip is almost perfect. My browser shows the little sound graph. in the second siren there is no low energy spot you just switch to a solid sound.
I never had trouble producing a pitch between F#4 and E5. My trouble was sounding like Miss Piggy, Ethel Merman or Edith Bunker. When I tried to maintain a masculine sound that is when the Flipping/choking at F#4 happened.
You have a nice solid tone throughout. Singing lighter is about shedding vocal cord weight and reducing sound volume.
One thing that people do not think about in terms of light singing and Heavy singing is that if you have a heavy cord closure or more mass to the folds as you ascend and approach the passaggio you reduce vocal mass before shifting. If you are already singing light you do not reduce mass you just increase pressure as you shift. If you are singing light and try to lighten more at the shift you will lose connection and flip to falsetto.

Just kidding. My ideas about songwriting are always centered on the message I want and a dead-simple chorus with a hook that will make you curse my name because you cannot ever forget it once you have heard it. But I am likely to go afield in arrangement, especially on instruments that I don't have a lot of experience with, such as drums.

yeah...dunno how comfortable id be in trying to follow "formulas" to make something audience friendly. If im going to go that route id just stop playing altogether and let a computer algorithm do it all.
This song was really nothing more than a personal greeting card to one girl. As long as I got in the words "Sugarboo" and "booboo" (it's hidden in there too lol) then im ok

If I ever write anything resembling that Garth Brooks song, or any modern "country" song...it will be with a gun at my head and even then id probably just tell 'em to shoot

    Hi Folks,
It has been a while since my last post.  This time I wanted to do something that is quite different from my last song(s).  I have always wanted to do distortion at lower ranges.  I just could not find the right support mechanism and way to do this without hurting myself.  I have understood how to do this safely without injuring myself.
Sometimes when I am not yet sufficiently warmed up I get a itchy feeling when I try to distort.  If I am careful, it goes away after a while.  I am assuming that I am not doing anything wrong because I can sing like this for more than an hour and I don't feel any effects later in the day or the next day.
All in all, quite a fun song to sing with an epic sounding F#5 to finish it.  I wish I could get some grit on this note, but for the time being happy with where I am!

    Your adorable... love your videos.

Nice work Ellise... your voice is gorgeous.
But it is under driven... at the level of experience and strength you are getting to Ellise, we should be hearing a bit more depth to your sound color... more "boom"... that includes, some darker amplified harmonics... your formant Ellise, could be a touch darker... bear in mind, Im splitting hairs with you here.
Your interpretation and "mojo" is good... you do a nice job expressing yourself in your songs, you always have.
There is a sense of... rushing the mojo how ever at times... I wish your coach would work on you with dynamics and... speed it up, slow it down, etc... its a bit, "crashing" through... for YOU Ellise, I set the standards higher. For a lot of people , I wouldn't bother picking on you about this, but you are really good and such great potential... Im going to push you. This is too clunky , its like doing a dance too fast and losing the elegance... this needs more sensitivity.
I wish you would train with me over skype and let me have a crack at you... get the bed tracks to these songs and sing them in front of me... I will help you to make the better and bring them up to your full potential Ellise. Email me privately if your interested, Ill give you a special TMV World deal since you are a long standing, dedicated member here.
I adore you, I think your awesome... keep going Ellise we are all pulling for you.. and get in front of me if you can on Skype.

Yes, it would be nice, wouldn't it?
I am used to hearing Justin's soft and raspy voice singing this. And I like the guy. He is funny, fun-spirited and he is pretty good on the drums, too. He has such a tongue-in-cheek delivery and so his version, the original, sounds more sarcastic. Whereas your version is more plaintive and heart-broken. And I like your version. You have such a bright voice. I wonder if there is a way to make the recording "warmer," which means some of the high partials are rolled off. Do you have someone mixing your recordings?
