Hi Collin, I liked your timbre in this song. I think you should check your input levels, as you started to distort when you got louder. Also, as Rob has already pointed out, you need to improve pitch. I almost fainted imagining myself singing this song. It is so wordy that I would have a hard time trying to sing it. Good job

As I know you just started training with The Four Pillars, I think you did a good job, man. I am not sure if you recorded everything in one take (I'm assuming you did), but as a fellow guitar player I would like to humbly suggest you to use backing tracks, or record the guitar in one take, and then record vocals in another track. This way you can focus 100% in your singing. It helps tremendously when students start practicing or recording songs. I don't consider myself a beginner in singing, but I notice a big difference when I do it. Although I'm getting better at coordinating both activities, at least in some songs. Also, if I may suggest you not to mimic the original singer's lack of enunciation. I found it very hard to understand the lyrics, so I listened to the original, and realized that it is not your fault. Nevertheless, way to go. Keep on Rocking!

Thanks again man! I totally agree with you, resonance plays such an important part in singing. Sometimes when I get to practice head voice only, if I find my sweetspot the sound gets way louder and it becomes almost effortless. It is really amazing.

HELL YEAH man!  This is one of my all time favorites... great mix and great feel brother!  Seriously carried the song very well, enough so that I was able to jam to it just like the original.  Keep up the good work man!

That's smart clean tones are more enjoyable imo as well.  Try what I was talking about in the other thread about trying to keep it down, I was singing this way the other day at work and when i hit the vowel it came out loud clear and pangy with lots of vibrato and I wasn't even expecting that.  It was like woah I was trying to make myself sound less loud and ended up sounding more loud when I opened up for the vowel.. I'm guessing it's cause I had more resonance than I thought I was going to have on that note.

I am watching Robert Luntes tehcnique about lift up and hold back where you bridge between your chest voice and head voice without choking and pushing. But it's hard to make it sound good. I want the tone to sound less yelling.

Simon, this is not the first time you say something like this! So, if you don't care, or if you think it sounds horrible (as you mentioned a few times in other threads), why in the world should we spend our time reviewing any song from you?! Several people, including myself and Robert, have already told you in different threads that you need to train seriously if you really want to improve your singing. If you are not willing to work hard to overcome your technical difficulties there is no point in posting the same songs over and over again. Have you noticed that no one (except me and Robert) took their time to comment on this thread? As I've been here for some time, I can tell you that is not just their busy schedules or that they are being mean to you. It is simple like that: if you are not putting your time on this, they aren't either. Peace

    Your Maiden:
    - Its pitchy, you need to work on intonation.
    - There seems to be a little bit of TA strength here, but your not lifting your soft palate and there is a lot of pushing and not enough resonance.
    - Are you training?  If you were training good bridging and connecting techniques you would be learning how to free your voice and resonate better. I hear a lot of throatiness, a lot of pushing, no resonance.
    - You are also, I think subconsciously, trying to sound like Bruce Dickinson... there are nuances here that seem to sound like your trying to have Bruce Dickinson sound... Don't do that. You need to sing the song in your own belted voice.
... you need proper training ...

Can you please paste in a link of you doing a slow, ascending siren from A3 to A4, through your passaggio. I want to see if you have the coordination and skill to bridge and experience any resonance at all. I want to see if you are training. Lets get to a real solution to help you, instead of reviewing smule clips that don't sound good. You need a reality check Simon, let's get serious.

Hi Simon, I think it sound better, but you are off pitch in some places, especially in the chorus, when you also sound the most constricted. I would like to add that your voice really suits this kind of music especially in the medium notes. You just need to learn how to transition to the higher parts (bridge your registers) and also practice it a lot to create muscle memory.

Yes, I agree it is a hard song to sing indeed. But You are singing constrained throughout the whole song, and you are not singing the highest notes, just using distortion, probably because the straining became unbearable, and you chocked. That is exactly why I suggested you to learn good technique, so you would be able to sing the songs you love. Additionally, being a baritone (even if you really are) is not the reason why you can't sing those notes my friend. It is simply lack of technique. You can believe me because I used to have the same limitation. The difference is, as I didn't know about tenors or baritones, I used to think my voice was not made to sing those songs. Cheers

Hi Simon, I think you actually got a good voice for hard rock and metal, but you sound very constrained/chocked up in this song, especially in the higher notes. Additionally, because of the way you are singing, you are having pitch problems on the high notes. If I may humbly suggest you that if you are really passionate about music and singing, and you seem like you are, consider learning and practicing vocal techniques with either a good vocal coach or a singing method. Keep on rocking!

Practice, practice, practice.  I've heard your voice in multiple covers, it's well within your grasp man.  Find a song you love that is double tracked (a LOT of Beatles songs are) and learn the hell out of it.  Get it down to the finest nuance and just keep replicating the take.

It sounds really good Jeremy, and so impressively similar to John's timbre. You did such a great job on the double tracking. I seriously doubt I could do something like that. I noticed the slightly off-pitch parts too, and volume drop outs in some high parts, when you probably go very soft. But other than that, it is really solid. Good job

So, I gather. Whereas, I learned a few times that it does no good to complain. Like one friend said, "no one listens, anyway."
And I have had great recordings using a cheap mic and Audacity, before. So, I know Reaper and my other mics do just as well or better. But in either case, it boils down to what I do with it.
And I have had a few people tell me I could not do a particular thing. And I would prove them wrong, which can be a delicious feeling, at times.
A co-worker and friend of mine said I would not be able to get a master electrician license because the test is just so hard, blah, blah, and blah. And so, that year, I took the test twice and passed the second time. First time, I use a study guide all summer. Didn't pass. Second time, waiting for the testing date, I did word search puzzles and passed. And let him know I did word search puzzles. So, not only did I get to prove him wrong, but rub it in a little.
The object of a word search puzzle and code book test is the same. The answer is right in front of your eyeballs, literally. You just have to allow yourself to see it.
And, I finished the exam before anyone else. 100 questions, 5 hours, open book. Even after re-checking all of my answers, I was finished at 4 hours and 25 minutes. I made sure my friend knew that, too.
And the next time I got a word search puzzle book, I wrote on the cover, "Ron's Master Electrician Study Guide" and took it to work.
It's how I was raised. My mother had a saying, "May God have mercy on your soul, because I won't."
Which was awfully close to the motto of the Outlaws MC - "God forgives, Brotherhood doesn't."
And I was still his friend but there are things I cannot forget.
So, take the things you feel you cannot accomplish and then prove yourself wrong.

I've always worked hard on my voice but I've never had the guidance I needed.  Recently I have elected help from Jens and Daniel and they both played a substantial role in peeling away the first layers of bullshit to get me on the right path.
However I took lessons sparingly and unfortunately I realized I was so profoundly lost in assumptions, bad habits, bad muscle memory, etc etc that merely getting a few lessons was not going to be enough.  So that's why I recently decided to buckle down and get a genuine vocal program that I could adhere to and schedule to.. to optimize and streamline my training to it's fullest potential.  Of course, when it came time to make this decision there was no program that came more highly recommended than Four Pillars.
I haven't even been at this for two weeks and yet I already see great progress and more importantly, I have complete confidence in the information I am being given.  I have already had two lessons with Robert and each one has been a genuine pleasure and one step further in the right direction of achieving my dream of having a big and exciting voice.
Thank you Robert, for your help and for drafting what I truly believe to be the best program out there right now.

    Jeremy,
    Cool choice for a cover.

    Your Review:
    - Its cool. I like it. You have a lot of personality and cheekiness to your singing, which is super cool. You seemed to wear this song well. Might be one of the best interpretations I've heard, I had a lot of fun listening to you sing this. Your a good singer.
    - Could use some refinement in the production; compression and perhaps a touch more ambiance or delay on the vocals.
    - 2:54 - 3:05 - (*auto edit*) COOL!
    - The back ups are a bit scattered, you could afford to tighten them up.

Overall, considering the playfulness of this song, I am hard pressed to find much wrong with it Jeremy. It is 85% super cool. Nice Job!

Great job Jeremy! I think your timbre really suits this song. I have to agree with Musikman regarding some slightly off pitch areas, but overall it sounded good. It is a fun song to sing. I believe that if you work a bit more focusing on the pitch and resonance in the high parts, you should add this one to your set list. Keep them coming!

Hi JonJon. I enjoyed this track and would love to hear it again after a more thorough mix. I don't have much to critique here just some observation. I really liked the bridge where you doubled the vocal. It kind of put me in the mind of Paul Stanley a bit or specifically like a Kiss type of bridge. I like the tone of your voice and would love to hear it up front of the mix a bit more. I understand the early stages of mixing can be a chore but you are onto something with this song. I write a lot of originals as well and know how hard it can be to create the whole sound of the track. It can be much easier at times to just cover material. I feel the song is strong overall and just needs to have the mix punched up a bit. Great Job.

Yeah, look, I know, you are proud of how old and stubborn you are. And I am older, with more practice being stubborn. Finish the production, secure copyright, get it released.
Then, get ahold of JJ Abrams and / or who ever his music person is and get it synchro-licensed to the next Star Trek movie. This would be awesome in that sound track, with Chris Pine doing all kinds of daring-do.
But I know you want rear back and prove how stubborn you are and dismiss my advice. Well, come at me bro ...

Very nice.. You sound very close tonally to Joe Elliot.  I guess that helps in sounding very good.  Your bridging has improved a great deal.  This sound it sounds very smooth for the most parts.  So keep doing the good work my friend.  You have come a long way....  BTW, Joe Elliot's voice also has a whiny quality which I love
This kind of singing is in your sweet spot and you may want to pick songs like this(unless of course you want to experiment and improve in which case the more diversity the better!)
